Default XM Radio Antenna

Doe anyone have experience with the mirror mount antenna for XM? I use the "micro" magnetic mount and it works pretty well. Now that I run the same route day after day crossing Mt Hood in heavy timber I have some dead spots. I've tried moving it around and found the best places on the cab, but there are still spots where it cuts out for awhile.

The mountain is to the North, so I think the interference is from the tall timber.

I-84 out of Portland is the Columbia Gorge, and with a solid rock wall to the South for many mile, I doubt that any antenna will work in that stretch.

If you have tried both and found a significant improvement with the mirror mount I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks!!

I think your deadspots are terrain related. When I ran the gorge, I had deadspots out there, and in several other areas as well. I get the same thing out east in the I-4 gorge and a few other places. That was with a KW T-2000 and the antenna was on the top of the cab.

I have the antenna mount now and it works well most every where, except in the I-40 gorge and where there are other physical obstructions like you are talking about.

I think its one of those "grin and bear it" kinda things... :? 8)

Put it as high up as you can- on the top brakets of the air diffuser seems to be a popular place, just be sure its protected from tree-branches...

I have the big, tall, pointy antenna and I don't get a signal on that stretch of I 84 either- if you're blocking the direct line, you won't get XM.

I dont know if this information will work for truckers, but the XM signal isnt blocked by fiberglass or glass. Hell, I dont even know if the roof of the cab is steel or fiberglass. But if it is fiberglass, perhaps somewhere inside the cab under the roof might work well. I ran into the problem of finding a good place to put the antenna on my Jeep with a hard top. Because I remove the top a lot, I didnt want to mount it on top of the hard top. With a little research I found out that on the rollbar, under the hardtop works great with the top not hurting the signal strenght at all.

Nothing works for Mount Hood. It is the tall timber that is blocking your signal. We dont get signal there on and off either.
