Default would you drive these trucks

truck a.

problems. air leak under cab without truck running will drain air tank in about 3 minutes. to much play in steering wheel, air dryer not working, air compressor going bad u can leave the truck on and oil constantly comes out of the air tanks, brakes are week u can push the brakes to the floor at 20 mph and it takes about 100-150 yds to stop not to mention the fact that u can pull the parking brake while the truck is rolling and it will roll another 10-15 feet before stopping. and no gauges work

truck b

has no seatbelt leaks power steering fluid and transmisson fluid like its going out of style the door doesnt latch all the way the transmisson sticks in reverse. gauges broke

am I wrong for refusing to drive these trucks granted im losing pay. would any one here drive something thats that big of a piece of crap. and what would be the pentalities if D.O.T pulled you over in truck a or b?

So......what is the problem? Real truckers don't use their brakes, anyway.

If the trucks are as bad as you say and you were stopped by DOT, they would shut your truck down ASAP. I won't drive a truck I know to not be safe. You and the company could be fined if you were caught. My advice is that unless the owner makes repairs where the trucks are safe to drive, to not get in them.

As far as the penalties go that would depend on the state. You as the driver could face several hundred dollars, maybe even thousands of dollars in fines or those could be given to the owner of the equipment or both. In addition you would be shut down and the only way the truck is going to move is after all repairs are made to bring it into compliance or at the end of a wrecker.

Personally though I would not worry so much about what would happen if the DOT caught you driving something that did not meet FMCSA regs as you should be worried what would happen if you ended up seriously hurting or killing someone because of the malfunctions. You could easily be facing jail time, permament loss of your CDL, and potentially millions of dollars in civil liabilites. More than likely you would not be in that jail cell alone as the owner would also be there with you.

Default Unsound

Is there any way you could anonymously request the NM DOT pay an unannounced visit to you employer for vehicle inspections? BOL

I left a job after just one week because of equipment that you just described. They could not put me in a truck that would pass a pre trip. They were very nice about it.

The screwed up part was they tried to put me in a 2001 Mack Vision that had the following problems:

Would not hold Air. Leak out after about 4 or 5 minutes.

Would not Idle, believe it had a severed vapor lock issue or air intaking into the fuel somewhere.

They only way I could get it to shift into 7th gear was to wind it up to about 2300 RPMS.

Steering was way off.

Would not pass Brake check.

I told dispatch I would not take the truck, and the wife was coming to pick me up. While I waited I went to offload my stuff off the truck and another driver (newly hired) was about ready to take off on a run with that truck.
Needless to say I was astonished. I spoke with him about the problems with the truck. I don't know if he left with it or not, but I believe he did.

Never drive a truck you believe is unsafe. Overall you the driver are responsible. If you kill someone because of unsafe equipment do you really believe that your dispatch is going to tell investigatin officers that he knew of the problems and told you to drive anyway?
