is harley-davidson over the hill?

harley-davidson sales dropping, losing its cool, and market share.

Mackman 04-02-2009 06:36 AM

I was 23 when i bought my harley. I dont think its an oldmans bike. Alot of my friends 21-27 ride harleys. More of them ride harleys then them JAP junk bikes.

BlooMoose 04-02-2009 06:39 AM

Sync...That is downright un-American...nothing makes a woman purr like a HD...I don't care how old you are....

Harley Davidsons = Twice the price, half as nice.

I admire the Harley Davidson motor company, not for their motorcycles but for their marketing and branding. I could only dream of brain washing so many individuals into believing that anything you purchase with my company logo will spontaneously make you infinitety cooler and become one b@d@ss MoFo.

:roll::roll:

You take a Harley road king and try to compare it to a JAP bike of the same thing. The Harley is diff. Better built. I do agree they are a little over priced but you get what you pay for. To me Harley is a name well worth paying for. PUT YOUR AZZ ON SOME CLASS:thumbsup:

I have done your comparision. The so called "Jap. Crap" runs smoother, accelerates far better, have way better lean angles and ground clearance, costs less, are not air-cooled-huge plus, won't cook your legs while riding, and offer much more modern technologies.
But end the end who really cares, it's your money ride whatever pleases you.

Syncrosonix 04-02-2009 10:04 AM

biscuit, i dunno about you but i'm waiting for some kind of question about whether or not i love the country in which i live in. it usually happens since i mostly buy japanese automobiles and products. most of the stuff america assembles is manufactured south of the border, and that includes harley-davidson. nothing really american about their bikes, except for the name.

LMAO that is funny right there... Nothing american but the name.

So i guess the harley plant in York PA 45min up the road from me is not American.

1- When i got my Harley brand new it ran smooth for me. It didn't start idling ruff until after i put the Pipes and intake etc. on it. Like the other 98% of Harley's.

2- Yes the Jap bike will accelerate alot faster then a Harley. But then again Harley's are not made for that. (expect the V-rod) It is a cruising bike.

3- Lean angles i don't care about i don't go around like speed racer and take turns at 100MPH. And ground clearance i could careless about cuz I'm not offroading in it.

4- You are right they cost way less.

5- Harley's are air cooled but i never had a problem in 2.5 years of my bike overheating at all.

6- modern technologies are not always a good thing. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Look at truck motors a 3406 Cat will have alot less problems then the newer C-15 Cats.

I will end by saying you are right. If you like JAP bikes more power too you. It is your money spend it as you please. But no matter what, you know a straight piped Harley sounds sweet.

Look at this video this is way people buy harleys. Maybe i just bought into the name. But you know what i love every min. of it.
YouTube - Harley-Davidson: Live by it.

Here are some pics of my bike 06 Street Bob. It looks alot better with the solo seat on it but when my GF rides with me she likes the sissy bar. Also what type of bike you got??? Post some pics of it.

When i just got back from the dealer with it.

I'm not sure if Harley's are made across the border, but I was inside the HD plant in Milwaukee picking up a load of prototype '09 and '10 Harleys back in '08. Plus, they do have their own fleet.

My Yamaha Banshee, 89 Honda Pilot are great off road machines. harley should make some!

Heavy Duty 04-03-2009 02:31 AM

Goldwings are made in Ohio, but some would argue Ohio is not part of the USA.

Maybe sales are off due to the economy, kide of like the big 3.

I was going to buy a new Harley but decided I couln't afford all the clothes to go with it.

Yea Harley clothes is the biggest ripoff. Harley T-shirt 20-30bucks. Harley hat 25-30. Don't even talk about there jackets 450+. I think they make more money selling clothes then selling bikes

the "jap crap" market is dominating the american. what does that say? american auto makers and so on have been handed their ass because of their arrogance. unlike gm, crysler, and ford, i don't think harley-davidson is in any trouble of going under any time soon.

i'll stick to my "jap crap" because i'm not into the white trash that usually clings to the h-d cruisers. i enjoy having a hot female clinging to me instead of some over-the-hill woman with saggy boobs and bad breath.

Well Ford is only in alittle bit of trouble. I think they will pull threw without a problem.

You can stick to your JAP CRAP. I will stick with my big V-Twin. Cuz im not into the ghetto gangsters types that usually clings to the rice rockets. I have a GF so i could care less what type of woman cling to the HD name.

PS im not getting mad or anything it is just talk. I like the good old HD debates.

Sync your out of the valley....don't you just LOVE all those business professionals that buy H-Ds (and all the clothes) and then every weekend they run up 93, JUST because they think they are cool? Come Monday morning, Biffy and Buffy have just GOT to put away the bike and get out the Lexus. Never seen so many flippin morons trying to kill themselves because of being clueless.

yeah, i LOVE it. especially when they feel the need to pass me when there's oncoming traffic well within range of doing damage. meh, at some point, their luck will run out.

One thing I don't understand about Harley's-

How can anything so loud be so slow?

that's the same thing i ask the idiots who put fart cans on their hondas, acuras, dodge neons, and so on. i think a lot of that show-glo street racing mod crap is |2etarded. there are some well done cars out there. however, if i wanted a car that is capable of doing well over 140mph. i'd buy a REAL sports car.

Snowman7 04-04-2009 05:55 AM

Good job Mack. We finally have a debate more heated than OTR vs local. You just may end up getting your feelings hurt and then someone's gonna have to get banned. LOL!

just kidding, man.....maybe.

Snowman7 04-04-2009 06:46 AM

I've had both and I prefer the HD. Absolutely the coolest cruising feeling in the world and beautiful machines to look at. But of course it wont outperform a crotch rocket in any way. Different strokes right!

Bring that POS to any track day, anywhere in California.

I wont even bring the Ducati, I'll show up with my 25 year old German touring bike & smoke your azz. If I can't lap you at least once in a session, I'll give you all my motorcycles & never ride again.

Mackman 04-04-2009 08:12 AM

Im talking about a stright line 1/4mile.

LightsChromeHorsepower 04-04-2009 08:28 AM

I'm talking about real life, where roads have turns in them.

I'd like to see that thing against a Hayabusa in the 1/4. I bet the 'Busa could take it.

And, that aint no Harley

Actually, after thinking about it, it probably sucks in the 1/4 too. If you could keep it straight & hooked up off the line it's probably unstable as he// at high speed. I don't think it would stand a chance against a 'Busa.

Phantom433a 04-04-2009 04:54 PM

Sure you can! HONDA, true 100k-mile motor, like the Goldwing, VTX. I did the HD thing for many yrs but am stuck on the 1300S model.Same size bike as the Roadking and as many after market parts as the HD! Everything for the 2 Honda models are made right here in Marysville Oh. They employ American workers, who cares what they do with their profits! The only bad thing is Honda took their motorcycles plant back to Japan this year. In my opinion, the VTX is far superior to the HD models, just as sleek and MORE reliable, they have the same single pin crank that gives the sound everyone is looking for plus the power to boot! I have 12k in my bike including what I paid for it, bagged, pipes, intake and all the chrome and most HD riders think it is a HD when they are behind me trying to catch me...lol HD is just one example of a company ripping the public off for a product that should not cost this much!!!!! That plant you were talking about, assembles and makes few parts, so it means nothing for the MADE IN USA debate!!!

LightsChromeHorsepower 04-05-2009 06:30 AM

I remember taking my Sporty apart & finding bearings that said "Made in Romania"

It still makes me giggle to see all the "bro's" out there with all the U.S. flag stuff & know they are riding around on parts made in a communist country.

I really don't dislike Harley's, I just can't stand most of the people that ride them.
