Consequences of actions.
The other day, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, was closed so an accident could be cleaned up. In that accident, a truck and trailer flipped off of the bridge deck into the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
Here is the story as it was reported, for the second time, yesterday in the Washington Post. WASHINGTON POST wrote; The deadly crash that closed one span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge this weekend unfolded in a few frightening moments, as a swerving car sent a tractor-trailer banging against both sides of the narrow bridge, then riding along the top of the bridge's railing for 100 feet before it tumbled over the side, according to officials and witnesses. Yesterday, as a contractor began removing sections of the truck from shallow waters near the bay's eastern shore, officials said the truck's impact had been extremely violent, and that that caused a rare failure. The truck punched a 10-foot opening in the bridge's reinforced-concrete railing, which is designed to survive even the most forceful collisions. Authorities reopened the bridge's eastbound span at 4 p.m. yesterday, with the gap in the railing patched by a steel beam. A spokesman for the Maryland Transportation Authority Police said yesterday that he would not discuss details of the crash, including any theories about its cause. Candy Lynn Baldwin, 19, the driver of one of the three vehicles involved in the accident, said in a phone interview from her hospital bed that she had fallen asleep while driving east on the bridge. Baldwin said she had left her mother's wedding Saturday in Baltimore and was returning to her home in the Eastern Shore town of Millington when she nodded off about 4 a.m. Sunday. "I don't remember it happening because I fell asleep at the wheel, but when I woke up we were in an accident," she said from Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. She said she remembers regaining consciousness in her car, a 1997 Chevrolet Camaro. "I just couldn't breathe or move my legs," she said. On Sunday, she said, doctors treated her for spleen and liver injuries. She said she was scheduled for surgery again yesterday afternoon to repair two broken kneecaps. "Most likely I'll be able to walk again," she said. "Then I'll have to go through rehab." Baldwin said that at the time of the crash, she was exhausted. "It was 4 a.m., and I had been up late preparing for the wedding and picking up people from the airport the night before," she said. The passenger in her car was Baldwin's cousin, Trish Ann Michele Carrigan, 21, visiting from California for the wedding. Carrigan was treated and released after the accident, authorities said. Truck driver John R. Short, 57, of Willards, Md., was killed in the accident. He was hauling a load of refrigerated chicken for Mountaire Farms poultry company in Selbyville, Del. Two people in the third car involved in the accident said they saw a black sports car drifting toward the center line of the two-lane bridge, which was carrying eastbound and westbound traffic. The Bay Bridge's other, three-lane westbound span was closed for maintenance. Seung Won Hong, 41, of Springfield was driving east in a Toyota Prius, headed for a fishing trip in Delaware with his brother-in-law, Ho Yoo, 42, of Alexandria. He said the impact came "only seconds after I noticed the Camaro was strange," he said. "Then, sure enough, it had drifted too far into the oncoming traffic." "Neither the truck nor I could have done anything [to avoid the crash], especially with the lanes being so narrow," Hong said. The car hit the truck, he said, and then the truck swerved and jackknifed into his lane. He said the trailer barely scraped the left rear quarter of his Prius as it passed. Then, Hong said, he watched through his rearview mirror as the truck hit the bridge's railing, slid along it and then toppled into the bay. "There was debris all around me" after the crash, he said. "The truck's axles were still left on the top of the bridge behind me. Debris from the Camaro was in front of me. It was like a bomb had gone off." Geoff Kolberg, chief engineer with the Maryland Transportation Authority, said the truck crossed the road and struck the opposite barrier with tremendous energy. "It was a lot of force: 80,000 pounds of truck hitting at a severe angle going at least 55 mph," he said. He said that the bridge's railings, called parapets, were rebuilt in the 1980s to meet modern safety standards. They are made of reinforced concrete, then anchored into the bridge deck, Kolberg said. In addition, bridge engineers said, the concrete barriers are designed to redirect vehicles back to the roadway. Generally, when vehicles sideswipe the barriers, their tires ride up on the barriers' angled bottom before being directed back onto the road. Even if they are hit at a more direct angle, the barriers are supposed to be strong enough to prevent an average vehicle from smashing through. But, in this case, the truck's impact took out a 10-foot section and displaced an 8- to 10-foot section. "It's very unlikely that this type of fatal accident would happen in most circumstances," said Ronaldo T. "Nick" Nicholson of the Virginia Department of Transportation, chief official in charge of building the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. National Transportation Safety Board investigators are looking into the accident. For now, the hole has been patched with a steel beam attached to the rest of the bridge, making it at least as strong as the sections that are gone or damaged, Maryland officials said. One of the first responders at the scene said yesterday that, at first, rescuers did not realize the truck had gone into the water. Firefighter Denny Lewis, a 10-year veteran of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department, said rescuers were focused on helping the passengers in the Camaro when they spotted something odd. On the bridge's deck, there was an axle and a tire from a tractor-trailer. But there was no tractor-trailer. For about the first couple minutes, we didn't really realize that the truck was over," Lewis said. The wreck, on a bridge that some drivers find harrowing under any circumstances, caused tie-ups that confounded beach-bound travelers and other motorists for miles. Many spent several frustrating hours in backups of more than 10 miles on both sides of the bridge. Beginning about 11 a.m. yesterday, contractors hired by Mountaire Farms removed the truck's cab and trailer from the bay, said Scott Winslow, a search and rescue specialist with the U.S. Coast Guard in Baltimore. Winslow said the truck posed little environmental risk to the bay. At most, he said, it held 300 gallons of diesel fuel, which would have had minimal impact even if all of it had leaked out. He said he did not know how much fuel was lost. "There was a visible sheen that came off, but there was nothing that could be cleaned up" because there was so little of it, Winslow said. Staff writer Matt Zapotosky and researcher Meg Smith contributed to this report. |
That makes two of us. Is she being charged with anything?
|
i agree orangetx, it makes me wonder if she knew at that point. she's also not too bright if she's giving interviews from her hospital bed detailing the accident. i'm sure her future attorney will love that.
Geoff Kolberg, chief engineer with the Maryland Transportation Authority, said the truck crossed the road and struck the opposite barrier with tremendous energy. "It was a lot of force: 80,000 pounds of truck hitting at a severe angle going at least 55 mph," he said. Glad to hear what actually happened with this wreck. I would say the girl is a fool for coming out and admitting she fell asleep at the wheel but I doubt they have told her the wreck she started caused a death.
No worries Jeff, she will be charged at the least for failure to maintain control. I'm wondering if maybe the truck driver knew he was SOL and so he did the best he could to jump from the truck. The rescuers found his body fairly quickly once daylight broke........sad story, minding his own business and ended up dead for something he could have done nothing to avoid. Been across that bridge twice, going to Dover and back. Didn't like it either direction. |
Here's a link to the news footage.

Here's the car.. http://a206.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...f107df6e05.jpg Some pics of driver........ makes you wonder. http://a226.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...b8d3661af9.jpg http://a935.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...e3db86609e.jpg http://a898.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...2e02efe3f9.jpg http://a173.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...290dc7c9f4.jpg Looks to me like she's behind the wheel in the one pic with Capt. Morgan. and a quote from her myspace page...... . I DEFINITELY want someone who can handle my drinking habits. And keep up with me link |
I would like to be on that jury, please.
:x |
thanks rosty for the links, especially that kent island bb, it was interesting  :? reading. this is going to be a story i'll follow for a good long time, especially after reading the rumour that she'll be charged with vehicular homicide.
i wonder if the driver had one of those gut reactions to pull the wheel to avoid her? |
especially after reading the rumour that she'll be charged with vehicular homicide. |

Gotta love that video. A tractor trailer ran into two cars. Yes, that it true, but it's the fine details which make the difference here
Isn't there such a charge as manslaughter by negligence, or something of that sort? I'm not certain what the exact terminology would be here.. |
I barely heard anything at all about that accident. All I know is that's one of my worst fears when driving. Anytime I'm on a high bridge, I always end up as far from the edge as possible.

Interesting...
She admits to falling asleep... But all the pics on MySpace show her with alcohol either in her hands or going down her throat. Aren't blood samples one of the very first things they do when you first get into the hospital? Sure would like to know what the test results are. Live today, for tomorrow we die... Party on... If there was alcohol in her blood, it needs to be VEHICULAR HOMICIDE. Go beyond manslaughter. They need to take those "myspace pictures" into court too. Show a pattern. |

Where are the trucking accident lawyers now?
When the man in Chicago drove his truck through an intersection and into a rail station filled with people - killing two - his face was plastered all over the news. Is her face plastered all over the news? On the Florida Turnpike - on my last trip outta there - I saw a huge billboard with the face of a trucking accident victim and some words I could barely read however, I'm sure they denounced us all - should we chip in to purchase a billboard about how we DIE to keep these morons safe on the road? This is not the first time it has happened. Remember the two idiots racing down a highway in traffic - one of them hit a tanker and he went over the side to avoid the stopped traffic? He's dead. Isn't that lovely. The man is dead - his truck fell off of a bridge and we're wondering how she's doing with her surgeries. I can only imagine how the family of the truck driver feels. I am sad and I am very angry. It's days like this that make me feel like 1. They wouldn't be happy at all unless we all took to the ditch. 2. They are only good for accidents; they'll be the death of us all. Where is our version of PATT, our version of CRASH. I wonder if she had been the one who fell over the side after being hit by a sleepy truck driver how this might've played out... If he had any injuries at all, they would be treating them from JAIL, let's be for real. And then I suppose all of my anger is simply my fear of falling from a giant bridge - or any bridge - like this man who was just minding is own business one day while at work, a man who will never get to go home again. His life snuffed out, stolen, because some moronic little girl was too sleepy to pull over - * Then in all my anger, I realized that I was once a stupid and thoughtless 19-year-old who fell asleep at the wheel. I was afraid to tell my Dad that I was tired, and I didn't even consider the other motorists on the road. I flipped my SUV and a pair of truck drivers from Oregon kept me awake until an ambulance showed up. Thank God no other vehicles were involved except mine, but had there been I have no idea what I would've thought or said or did or anything. A few years after that one of my best friends flipped her car on the Delaware Memorial Bridge and a truck driver put out the fire, broke out a window and rescued her. And so I guess I'm just sad that this man comes out looking like a bad guy and he's the one who has the grievance... I'm just sad now. I'm praying for you all, all of the drivers out there who risk their lives daily and all of our families. That's all. |
Believe you me, if her lawyer(s) don't get that Myspace page shutdown ASAP she will pay big time from the other side. Lawyers for the truck driver will be all over it whether it's set to private or not.

$$$ will pay 4 her freedom
Sad part is she probably comes from wealth and they buy their way out of everything. My sister who was a nurse was killed about same time of am 3:30 am back in 1995 down by Jeff City, MO by an 18 yr old drunk female driver who never did one days time in jail. She was some politicians' daughter. My sister was doa and the girl hit her and drug her a block b4 she stopped. I hate drunk drivers! I was hit back in 1982 at 10:00 am by a drunk driver and the idiot tried to claim workmans' comp and was able to pay the cops off since it was a little tiny backwoods town in Kansas. Why is it the drunks almost always get off?
|
I've driven across that bridge several times and it's a scary bridge to drive on, at least for me. Just because, there is no where to go but the water, for the most part.
|
Were in the Hell is that DA. When my friend had his fatal in 96 he wanted to charge him wiht 2nd degree murder even though the other guy was DRUNK and speeding. Yet this DA is more worried about his Election prospects than doing his freaking job. POut me on any jury with her case on it trust me her butt will end up in prison.

Not so long ago there was an accident involving a vehicle towing a trailer that didn't have his safety chains attached and the trailer came unhooked, that accident also involved a big truck, I'll see if I can find a link. I believe there was a fatality in that one as well. |
That didn't take as long as I thought here the link.

Matcat, that's why I said ASAP. Unless the family of the driver already has a lawyer who was able to get to the pics, they won't surface in court as legal evidence.
Rosty's link is a total joke by the investigators. It's a lengthy crash report by Transportation Authority Police, full of details on the horrendous crash. But bottomline investigators say this may have been a pure accident with no one criminally responsible. Utter chaos erupted on the bridge after a homemade trailer came loose. It caused a chain reaction crash as vehicles behind it swerved to avoid it. Now the newly released crash report finds the fault lies solely with the driver of the SUV, which was pulling the homemade trailer. According to the report, there was no safety hitch pin used. That would have prevented the trailer from coming loose. Also, the safety chains meant to help in case the trailer did come loose were too long, according to the report. Despite the faulty trailer hitch, the report indicates it was a horrible accident that could not have been predicted. |
Where is Golfhobo's responses ?!??!??!????!!!!
I would expect him to defend this woman.....   |
it seems logical to me and you mr. ford, but i guess the state of maryland has different standards. :?
Legislation aimed at preventing accidents like one that killed three people on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge last year was approved by the Maryland Senate on Friday. The Senate voted 45-0 for the measure, which defines various devices that are used to tow vehicles. The bill also sets a maximum penalty of $1,000, if a violation of the new regulations causes death or serious injury. The bill requires that a towed vehicle be securely attached to the towing vehicle by a connection that is structurally adequate for the weight drawn. The measure also spells out that the connection must be mounted properly and securely without excessive slack. The bill also requires a locking device that prevents separation of the towed and towing vehicles. something in rosty's link that disturbs me even more is this story  :!: |
Vavega, it's Baltimore, doesn't surprise me there at all. Place is rough.
|
I've also been across that bridge a number of times. Generally, from east to west so that I don't have to pay the toll. (we don't have a "cheap-skate smiley", do we?) I've never known just how deep the water is, but always enjoyed seeing the boats, and a ship once in a while. When my wife was with me, she would use the camera and get some great pictures of boats and the like.
They're saying that from all the tracks, the driver tried to avoid hitting the car, and bounced between the sides before he went over. He should not even have been there. The company had a load and no one to take it, so he did. I have no idea how many times, I've been told the same thing from my company. And, Yes, I also take it. As to how his family is coping, this is the latest thing I've seen. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...l?hpid=topnews Even his ex-wife speaks well of him. I really feel bad for his family. As to the young lady, I won't say what I'd like to see done to her. She might find prison time a bit kinder. |

i was over the bay bridge (going eastbound to w/m) last week, but lucked out since they only had one lane closed. still it's a bad feeling knowing you have no where to go but down.
i've never had a problem in baltimore mr. ford, maybe it's my naivety showing or i've just been lucky. i wonder if that case was road rage and the weapon of choice was a gun instead of the car. |
I don't think Baltimore is much different from any other city. There's good spots and bad. I've worked in some of the bad spots and really wasn't bothered by any one. I've had some things stolen but they can be replaced.
|
I lived in Baltimore for a few years and grew to despise that city. Now the crime is so bad you have to be foolish to be in the wrong part of town after dark, but I suppose you could say that about any big city anymore.
Nice Signature line there RostyC  |
Baltimore used to be decent but yeah, the crime rate shot sky high. It is starting to come back down slowly.
I dunno know vega, maybe just luck. Dad used to go in there in the middle of the night doing trash and every night had something crazy go down. He eventually asked to not get sent back there. Had some crazy ho-bag jump up on the passenger side steps and want in the truck one night as he was driving down a street. Door was already locked, told her to get off, she wanted money then, he hung a left hand turn hard and tossed her off. After that he said he was done going into that city. |
I just went across the Bay Bridge yesterday afternoon, and they've got it all cleaned up now. Traffic is using both sides. But, I was going west, so I did not see the "I"beam they have in place of the missing concrete. However, I DID notice a bit more presence from law enforcement. And, it was 4-wheelers that were being stopped. They were on my side before I got to the bridge, and on the eastbound side after I crossed it.

Nice Signature line there RostyC  I've never been certified at anything so I'm going to flaunt it. You might see me at the scale on 70 inspecting flatbed boards. I'm power tripping. 8) On Topic: You guys have to remember there's no consequences for your actions in MD, it's always someone else's fault. |
at least this article gives you a little hope that the MTA police are looking into all of it.

Of course did any of us expect any of those bridge railings to contain 40 tons of truck? |
I've watched all the videos and read all the newspaper articles and even read all 15 pages of the Kent Island Online board. All I can say is, we have to wait for the toxicology reports before making a decision. I was at first angered by WBALTV's first report on the accident and was ready to fire off an email (they made it sound as tho the driver was at fault" slamming them for skewing the story to sound that way without having any answers. My prayers go out to Mr. Short's family for their loss, as for Ms. Baldwin.....her family or lawyer may have had her cancel her Myspace, but the pics are out there. She will live with this for the rest of her life.
