Its official both the house and senate no mexican trucks
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate voted Tuesday to ban Mexican trucks from U.S. roadways, rekindling a more than decade-old trade dispute with Mexico.
By a 74-24 vote, the Senate approved a proposal by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., prohibiting the Transportation Department from spending money on a North American Free Trade Agreement pilot program giving Mexican trucks greater access to U.S. highways. The proposal is part of a $106 billion transportation and housing spending bill that the Senate hopes to vote on later this week. The House approved a similar provision to Dorgan's in July as part of its version of the transportation spending bill. Supporters of Dorgan's amendment argued the trucks are not yet proven safe. Opponents said the U.S. is applying tougher standards to Mexican trucks than to Canadian trucks and failing to live up to its NAFTA obligations. Until last week, Mexican trucks were restricted to a commercial border zone stretching about 20 miles inside the United States, except in Arizona, where it extended 75 miles. One truck has traveled deep into the U.S. interior as part of the pilot program. |
Don't hold your breath. Bush has said he will veto the bill.

Hmmm, I guess we should live in a dictatorship then. The last time I checked, the lawmakers are elected by the people for the people. But Bush has lost all reality with the people. Look no further than the quagmire in Iraq to figure that one out. I can't wait for the loser to leave office. |

Hopefully it stays this way and if Bush veto's (and why shouldnt he, hes a lame duck with nothing to loose execept to keep his special intrests happy), then hopefully congress can override his veto. This entire situation, very few people are for it, the will of the people is what should be done, not the will of Bush and special corporate interests. |
I caught the tale end of a report this evening about the bill. One Senator said that it was not in the interest of truckers for this bill to fail. HEEEELLLOOOO!!!!!!!!! I wonder what truckers he was talking about? Mexican? It show you how out of touch some of these people are with the voters.

This has nothing to do with illegal immigrants and everything to do with giving jobs to foreign workers. So long as there is at least .00001% unemployment, jobs should not be outsourced to foreign workers. |

You wouldn't know it by the amount of people we have packed in there every day. I have news for you, don't blame Wal-Mart for wanting cheaper items. If you want somebody to blame, blame all your neighbors and yourself. We only provided what the market wanted. As for low wages, the store I worked at has one of the highest starting payrates of any employer in town. Even the local manufacturing plants don't pay as well. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. |

I know some of the answers. When I was in EMS in Vegas, I transported quite a few Walmart employees from the stores they worked in. They had nothing but BAD to say about pay, benefits, etc. They said Walmart provides terrible health benefits that will cost you an arm and a leg if you used it, as the co-pays and deductables were too high. I for one never "asked" for low priced junk that falls apart quickly. My family shops at other stores who are just as competitive, such as Target, Best Buy, etc. The employees are friendlier, paid better and have better quality merchandise. Walmart store are dirty, cluttered and full of junk that doesn't last. |

FWIW, I know plenty of people who worked for Target and Best Buy who wouldn't recommend them as an employer to their worst enemy. |

Maybe you need to move away from the border for a while so you can realize that the rest of America does not want this to happen. Besides, if Bush vetoes it there are more than enough votes to override it. Thank God. |

Majority of the people and the majority of the lawmakers. |

Majority of the people and the majority of the lawmakers. Aside from the polling which you say is unreliable and false, what is to be said about the BI-PARTISAN vote to kill funding? 75-23 speaks pretty loudly to me that this isn't a one sided problem. |
Clueless much? When the people being polled know NOTHING of the subject of the poll, how reliable is the poll in the first place....

I hate to post bad news for the doomsdayers. But cutting funding doesnt have to stop this program, it can still be privately funded. Right now trucks are STILL coming accross the border. Even without federal funding the law still stands, mexican trucks can come accross the border.

Sheepdancer is correct. The Supreme Court ruled in 1994, that that the NAFTA agreement obligates the USA to permit long-haul Mexican trucking throughout the country. The politicians can scream , holler and strut around like they are on the side of the working people of America, but it is all show, pure BS for the upcoming elections. They sold you and your families out to special interests and corporate America years ago.
The fault is of our making. No one spoke up when it mattered. And it is likely 75% of the crooked incumbent politicians running for re-election will be returned to office. We will only have ourselves to blame. Again. |

But I fear that the sheeple will not awake in time to make a difference. Goin Fer It's Wife |
