Youch! This is why I let the store managers have that privelage. However, on the rare occasions when we have to do it ourselves, I either employ lineman's pliers, or pull the band of the seal tight with one hand, and wiggle the tab with the other. It bends so much that it breaks after 5-10 seconds, and I still have all my digits...
Screw that, I'd rather use plastic seals.
