Default Computer guru needed

On my company issued computer, I went into IE to delete my browsing history and the button for deleting history is grayed out...they disabled the button so I can't delete my browser history. Anyone know how to re-enable that button? No, I ain't looking at porn but keeping all that crap slows the computer. Any ideas on how re-enable?

What operating system do you have and what version of IE? History can probably be cleared from the command line but I'd need to know those two things.

If you're using XP and IE6 open "My Computer" and go to "C:>Documents and Settings>HWD>Local Settings"

HWD= whatever user name you're using on that computer.

In there you'll find a Temp, Temporary Internet Files, and History folders. Open each folder and delete everything in there.

This program will delete all history cookies and cache every time you turn on your computer. http://www.ccleaner.com/

Good luck. Technically speaking, you can't delete or overwrite a browser history in Windows/Explorer. While it may appear deleted on your machine, the record of "where you went" and it's space and bulk will always exist for anyone who has the capability to retrieve it.

As for the pages and files you viewed, the images (picture of a page, like this one, or say an audio file) can be deleted or overwritten, depending on the type of file. Is there a "recent items" file on your start menu?

Personally, I'd rather get my own laptop for surfing the web. As far as your job goes, it could be worse getting caught checking out another trucking company's website than getting caught surfing porn.

And some of these trucking companies are providing internet. No way would I use that, then the history isn't even just on your machine, it's on their servers.

That being said, you'd have more control over your history and everything else, if you used Firefox and quit using IE.

On another topic, has anyone seen these new Acer Aspire One mini laptops?

I agree with you 100%. I'm not sure why people even use IE when you can get Firefox for free.

re-enabling that history button is a registry hack, and unless you're extremely confident in your pc skills i wouldn't recommend you touching it. but if you are feeling brave, a link to read. re-enable is change the value from 1 to 0. if your mistaken and change the wrong registry value, and believe me it can be easy to do, you can hose the whole system. you've been warned.

before you use crapcleaner, view what history is saved.
go to start
control panel
folder options
view tab
scroll to files and folders
select hidden files
uncheck "hide protected files"
yes and accept and close

then
start
my computer
local disk C:
documents and settings, your name
local settings, history

i suspect though that your problem with "keeping all that crap" isn't with the history saved, but a bunch of adware and spyware on your system.

once you run crapcleaner, then i suggest you install and run adaware free, and spybot . once you run both of those and delete all that they find, your system should speed up. another great program that runs in the background for protection is spywareblaster

as cdswan has stated those files, images, etc will still be on the machine, only a shredding program can wipe them.
