Anti-gun crusaders seem worried about the advent of a Republican administration. Heaven knows why. Republicans, in recent years, have managed to do nearly as much damage to the Second Amendment as Democrats.

In 1969, journalist William Safire asked Richard Nixon what he thought about gun control. "Guns are an abomination," Nixon replied. According to Safire, Nixon went on to confess that, "Free from fear of gun owners' retaliation at the polls, he favored making handguns illegal and requiring licenses for hunting rifles."

It was President George Bush, Sr. who banned the import of "assault weapons" in 1989, and promoted the view that Americans should only be allowed to own weapons suitable for "sporting purposes."

It was Governor Ronald Reagan of California who signed the Mulford Act in 1967, "prohibiting the carrying of firearms on one's person or in a vehicle, in any public place or on any public street." The law was aimed at stopping the Black Panthers, but affected all gun owners.

Twenty-four years later, Reagan was still pushing gun control. "I support the Brady Bill," he said in a March 28, 1991 speech, "and I urge the Congress to enact it without further delay."

One of the most aggressive gun control advocates today is Republican mayor Rudolph Giuliani of New York City, whose administration sued 26 gun manufacturers in June 2000, and whose police commissioner, Howard Safir, proposed a nationwide plan for gun licensing, complete with yearly "safety" inspections.

Another Republican, New York State Governor George Pataki, on August 10, 2000, signed into law what The New York Times called "the nation’s strictest gun controls," a radical program mandating trigger locks, background checks at gun shows and "ballistic fingerprinting" of guns sold in the state. It also raised the legal age to buy a handgun to 21 and banned "assault weapons," the sale or possession of which would now be punishable by seven years in prison.

Gun control crusaders argue that the Republicans are simply yielding to grassroots pressure, to gain political advantage. But polls show little evidence of such pressure.

A Gallup/CNN/USA Today survey taken in June 1999 – only two months after the Littleton massacre – showed that the number of Americans who favored stricter gun laws had declined by 20 percent since 1990.

Public support for gun control has dwindled even further since then. An Associated Press poll released on the one-year anniversary of the Littleton shootings shows that Americans favor strict enforcement of existing laws over new gun laws – the exact position of the National Rifle Association (NRA) – by 42 to 33 percent.

That same month, a survey by the Pew Research Center showed that only 6 percent of Americans believed that tougher gun laws would prevent future school shootings.

Meanwhile, a Tarrance Group poll has shown that only 5 percent of Americans want gunmakers and gun dealers held responsible for misuse of firearms.

You make some good points aginst the right on gun control. However al look at the left clearly shows who are the gun grabbers and Americans know it too.

Gun sales have skyrocketed recently inlight of B. Hussein Obama's rise to the left wing canidate.

If yoiu plan on buying a semi automatic rifle, you better be getting it done. The MSM likes to call them assualt rifles but by definition an assualt rifle is caple of select fire.......but they try to make it sound worse....

If Obama wins, we will see gun control laws in this country that will rival those of Hilter, Stalin and other socialist leaders.

partssman, what up guy? I gotta agree with ya on these 3 quotes. The first one is why I'm pro-gun myself, even though I don't own a gun at the time. Here's one I like:

"Democracy is 2 wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner, liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the vote."

But here's my prediction for gun control in an Obama administration: I'll bet it never comes up. The Dems learned a few years ago that talking about gun control is political suicide.

It's one thing if you're a small-time politico in Chicago, or Detroit, or South Central LA, but on the national level, I don't think we'll see it out of these morons.

I agree on the gun control part, but watch for ammo control. There's a bill now to limit the number of rounds you can have without a permit. Don't forget the shortage of primers some years ago......too many guns out there, but ammo they can control.

They can not control the ammo if you make your own...

If you know what you are doing, you can make propellent out of ingredients found at any "BEAUTY PARLOR". (Even GLADE air-freshener will burn) And, remember someone's post about dust bunnies and roller skates?

1 1/2 inch keystock, with a 5/8 hole drilled straight into the end will handle 700 grains of lead that does not have to penetrate a bullet-proof vest to make the vest useless. And, that lead can come from an automobile battery melted down.

Of the weapons comfiscated from street gangs in Washington DC in a 5 year period, more than 85% were HOME-MADE, including .22s made out of telescopic car antennas.

Those who wish to ban guns will only succeed in LOOSING CONTROL OF GUNS. Think about it... Both drugs and prostitution are banned, but there are areas in nearly all, if not all, major cities where they have no control of either. I really do not want to see that happen to guns.

Although this is a valid argument, it is a lame one. Our military has perfected "shock and awe." You would not be contesting the staid British Army who lost primarily when their supply lines were cut off. Waco should have taught you the futility of this fanatacization.

Not only are there MANY more distinctions between freemen and slaves, but IMHO, the true badge of liberty is a little white cross in a field of the same.

IIRC, the vote in Cuba was RIGGED bigtime by the Communists who controlled and intimidated the populace into that vote. There has NEVER been a "free election" where Communism was the result.

I believe you are probably right, Trux.... but perhaps for a different reason. I believe that the Democrats will respect the Supreme Court decision on the 2nd Ammendment, and have no desire to contest it.... unlike the way the Republicans have fought tooth and nail to overturn Roe V. Wade for the last 8 years!
