Default Ice Road Truckers' sets The History Channel ratings record.

Its historical connection probably still remains unclear to most viewers, but one thing seems clear: Ice Road Truckers -- a new The History Channel docu-reality series that follows a group of six truck drivers who navigate frozen terrain just miles from the Arctic Circle -- is a hit.

Ice Road Truckers' Sunday night premiere episode hauled in 3.4 million overall viewers -- a ratings performance that made the Deadliest Catch-like series' debut the most-watched original telecast in The History Channel's own 12 year history.

"We couldn't be more pleased with the premiere," The History Channel general manager Nancy Dubuc said of Ice Road Truckers' debut broadcast, which drew an overall household rating of 2.6. "This is a great start to a series that showcases why history is so fascinating."

In addition to ranking as the network's most-watched original programming broadcast ever, Ice Road Truckers' premiere also averaged 2 million viewers in the Adults 25-54 demographic and 1.8 million viewers in the Adults 18-49 demographic -- numbers that made it The History Channel's #1 telecast of all time in those demographics.

Overall, Ice Road Truckers premiere finished tied for No. 9 in the Adults 18-49 cable programs rankings for the week ending June 17.

I found the show very interesting. I only saw the one episode and I will try to see it whenever I can.

WOW!! Must have been a SLOW week!

No, really..... those numbers are astounding!!!

I saw the first episode, where everyone made it successfully. But, I missed the next installment, where everyone ended up in the "ditch." I wonder how THAT one did??

I'm hoping they do a marathon one weekend after the series is over so that I can watch it all back to back like they do with Deadliest Catch, though it is on a different channel.

Hopefully since the ratings are good they will go with it and not just end as a 1 season show.

According to my friend, the marathon (6 episodes) starts TONIGHT (Sunday, Jul 8th) at 7 p.m. EDT.

Be there, or be "square."
