OHHH, I know...tell him to move to Alaska and be one of those Crab fishermen. That pays really well.

Basically the boy is willing to work at least. Not the most stellar worker, but willing to work. And can hold a job for a reasonable amount of time. He basically cares about three things---video games, talking on the phone, and i'll let you guess what the 3rd thing is.
Here is what I would do.....He has to buy his own video games, He has to pay for his own phone.....and if Im guessing right on the 3rd thing eventually he is going to realize that SUCCESS gets better women.
Really here is the absolute truth on what he needs to do. You said he was 18. He needs a dose of reality. Tell him if he gets a job, any job he can get. Get him some cheap scummy apartment. With a mattress on the floor, no TV, maybe one lamp. Pay the first months rent for him and then say "OK you are on your own, dont ask us for help" He will suffer quite a bit. But eventaully he will realize a few truths. With a low paying job, if he buys video games, he cant pay rent. If he pays for a phone, he might not be able to eat. And for the 3rd thing....Reality, no quality woman is going to want to date a guy with no money, a crappy apt, no TV and a old mattress on the floor. Reality will set in and he will want to EARN and do what it takes to EARN

Quote: i quit high school at 17 years old (am 23 now and have my GED just got that like a year ago) But i made 49,000 last year drivin a honeydipper pumpin out septic tanks. 18.74an hr OT after 40 worked a good bit of OT. It can be done but he has to want to work for it. I just got done a job workin on Tugboats that paid good and you dont need a h.s. or ged for it. The capt. was 67years old and he quit high school and he was makin 92k a year to work 6months.
Sure it can be done....JB Hunt, (the man) only had a 7th grade education.
However an education sure makes things quite a bit easier and gives you more options.

That's not a bad plan. Right now, he pays for his own phone. The problem is that all the money he earns gets blown on the phone; He is constantly talking to girls on it. The video games he bums off the other kids living in the home.

Quote: 3) Tell me more about tugboats----not for him, but for me.
Well where to start. I Knew a buddy of mine who worked on tugs he talked me into it it sounded kinda cool. So i tryed it and didnt like. Only lasted 3 trips. The boat i was on work a 7 day on 7 day off so it wasnt to bad alot work 14/14 and 21/21. I was a deckhand my rate was 215.61 a day. Its like 40k a year to work 6months. I just didnt like being on the boat it was like being in prison. Couldnt get away. But the nice thing is they pay for all the food so it doesnt cost you one penny the whole time your out. If you want more info let me know. I worked for k-sea. here are some links to some tugboat companys.

The most I ever made as a company driver was for Sherwin Williams. I think it was about $311 for the day working about 14 hours and running about 500 miles for that day. They paid me .38cpm, 4.85 for a drop and hook, .12 cents per hundred weight to pallet jack the load to the tailgate, .16 cents for picking up each empty pallet to be returned to the DC and $40 per backhaul. On this day I ran from Portland to Everett, WA and all around Seattle.

What is the most money that you've made in a day, driving truck and what did you have to do for it?
OK, this one is easy. I got paid $650.00 to drive a grand total of 70 miles. More than once.

Nothing for me on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, OK, we'll send you to the stop 35 miles from home on Friday, one stop on the truck. 70 miles for the week for my salary of $650.00.

People wonder why I cry so much about losing my old job. That is why. I averaged 1600 miles a week for that $650, but there were odd weeks like the one above. Even a couple of weeks when I sat at home ALL week for $650.

It was only $650 a week, but damn.

I guess this has a lot to do with why I got laid off. They sure paid me for a lot of nothing. Especially toward the end. One week I got paid $650 to call in every day in the middle of making my big music stand, and I never went anywhere at all:

I really like your big music stand, it is beautiful.
What kind of music do you play?

15 hours of work, on every holiday that I was scheduled to work in 2001, 2002 and 2003. 8 hours from midnight to 7AM, 8 hours from 4pm till Midnight. Each holiday was paid @ triple time & 1/2. Those were the days.
OMG that is IMPRESSIVE!

Wow.
IMMEDIATELY was obviously the key word.

(I got a $250 tip once to take some keys to the airport in Alb. for a guy who forgot them.) I now have some perspective on that.
