Police scanner? Yeah, you program it. For an example, go to Radio Shack, and ask them for some police frequencies. You program those frequencies into the scanner.

Or order one of those "Betty Bearcat" manuals that list all the frequencies.
I used to have a Uniden Beartracker that was already pre-programmed and that was a niftly little gadget.

The older ones are pretty much obsolete now that they're going to digital and trunking signals, but that's mostly with city police. I think most state troopers are sticking with the old conventional frequencies.

i've got a uniden bc-8, it has the preprogram city/country/state police. dot"road workers-salt shakers" air, weather, cb, but what i like is it can hook up to my laptop so i can run it on the laptop also i went to radio shack and got a book of channels "with it also on cd" so if i want to reprogram it i can use the cd and cut and paste it to the scanner.

Scanners are nice, I use to listen all the time back home. It very interesting when a Storm hits such as a Tornado and such.
Had a Tornado go about a mile from my house and listening to the Sheriff Deputies was very enjoyable. The Twister missed my place by a mile. I had gone to my parents place since I do live in a Moble Home and you know how they are in a Tornado. It only touch and go through the county, mostly trees down. One House was destroyed, though. That was 2 years ago.
At the time my Dad had it and listening to it. I was watching the storm come in via the weatherChannel.com and had a Gut feeling so I grabbed my Cat and took off to my parents. I met the Sherriffs going the other way.

I've got a Bearcat handheld. I can even hear the cell phones. :P I dont turn it on that much anymore. I can pick up Wichita County, and the area towns/counties, but not our city police, or the fire dept. Last year, our city went to the digital radios. A friend of mine is a SWAT officer. I talked to him about it, and he told me that they dont put out a frequency. It's like they run scramblers, or something.
