About the General Knowledge CDL Written Test
The General Knowledge test:
- 50 questions.
- You need 40 correct answers (80%).
- Time limit is usually 60-90 min. Varies by state.
- Each state has a number of unique laws, but these tests cover knowledge that is universally required in every state
The General Knowledge CDL written test is the longest of the eight types of written tests—most of them aren’t actually written but completed on a computer—and is required for all CDL licenses.
The questions (like those on all CDL written tests) are multiple-choice, and depending on your state, there could be a variation of how many options from which to choose. Some states give you 3 multiple choice answers to select from. Others give you 4.
The General Knowledge topics cover a wide range to ensure safety on the roads between CDL’s and other motorists:
- Vehicle inspection
- Cargo transport
- Basic control of your vehicle
- Shifting Gears
- Seeing
- Communicating
- Controlling Speed
- Managing space
- Seeing hazards
- Distracted driving
- Aggressive drivers/road rage
- Driving at night
- Driving in fog
- Driving in winter
- Driving in very hot weather
- Railroad-highway crossings
- Mountain driving
- Driving emergencies
- Antilock braking systems
- Skid control and recovery
- Accident procedures
- Fires
- Alcohol, other drugs, and driving
- Hazardous materials rules for all commercial drivers
Questions run the gamut, asking for a clear understanding in the following examples. Why should you back toward the driver’s side? What does “communicating” mean in safe driving? How do you find out how many seconds of following distance space you have? What are some things you can do before and while driving to reduce your stress? What type of vehicles can get stuck on a railroad-highway crossing?
