Default Parking lights on while parked

Is there something that I don't know about concerning parking lights? I noticed that a lot of truckers will be parked in a parking lot while asleep with their parking lights on and most of the time the truck isn't even running.

Is this some kind of fashion statement that I'm not aware of, or is there an actual purpose to doing this? I can understand why people may do this while being parked and sleeping on an on-ramp, but in a parking lot?

    What's the dealio?

My speculation is it will assist the next driver backing into the spot alongside. (selfish reason...to protect your own fenders) I know Ive backed into some spots and it was like backing into a black hole. Would have to get out and look to check alignment.
If the lighting in the parking lot is adequete I wont leave my parking lights on. But, if it is dark as dark can be I may leave them on.

I leave mine on so(as someone else already pointed out) the driver backing next to me in the middle of the night can see me.

It is especially nice in stormy weather.
When I know the conditions ask for them, I leave mine on as well.
It is an added safety measure as well as a courtesy.

I also leave mine on if the lighting conditions are not good in a parking lot as a courtesy for the next driver to utilize in backing into the spot next to mine. I also prefer to back into a spot if the driver has left his lights on for me to guide on.

No Rev, we were talking about parking lights, not high beams and loud music

I was parked in our Vegas yard napping with my markerlights on.....next thing I know, my trucks a rocking. Another driver backed in and tore half my driverside fender off.......his excuse "I didn't see him parked there". Guess those lights in his mirror didn't mean diddly.
