Filter Wrench

I know someone one here will be able to help me out.......I want to change the filter on my air dryer. But the problem is finding a filter wrench that will fit the diameter. I have those adjustable rubber strap kinds and broke not one, but two attempting to remove the old filter . So I would prefer to find the "good ole" metal strap kind.

Any suggestions on where I can find one?

I assume you're referring to one of the newer style air driers with the "spin on" filter.

Use a chain wrench such as this to remove the old filter:

Also make sure the air system pressure is entirely released before removing, or the O ring will blow out with a bang, and you could get hurt.

An auto parts store may have the wrench you need. Or Napa might carry heavier duty ones.

Yeah it's the spin on/off kind. That chain wrench looks like it would do the job. I thought about going "Old School" and pop a hole in it with a screw driver like we used to do on oil filters back in the day but am a little apprehensive to do so. Oh, and yeah I drained/released all the air out of the system before I tried with the rubber wrenches.

Ebay shows 310 listings. Some look like what Kranky suggested.

I didn't check Ebay. I was kind of hoping to get my hands on one while I'm out on the road. Hopefully I will come across a NAPA, Northern Tool, or some other place that might have them. If that doesn't work I'll just have to go to one of those places when I get back home.

"Thank You" to the both of you for your suggestions, I appreciate it.

napa has one that has a very heavy leather like strap and and 1/2" square fitting so you can use a 1/2" drive ratchet on it, I havent met a filter yet that it cant take off. you could probably get it at a truck dealer also

it looks like this http://i42.tinypic.com/3499sb4.jpg it's 22.50 at mytoolstore.com

That looks like it would do the jog too.......now it's just a matter of finding a place that carries it or the chain type. Thanks.

I got one of those style wrenches for free last monday evening. Had my oil changed at the Petro in Shreveport. Found their wrench on the oil filter during an enroute check, the next morning. Also saw that they didn't change the filter!

:o:o:o No...I did not stand there and watch them change the filter. I figured I shouldn't have to! Since I had the service done on monday night, tuesday morning I checked the oil, but I did not shine my flash light onto the filter! :o:o

Got a new oil change when I got to the Petro in West Memphis AR that evening.

:angryblue::angryblue: The bad thing about finding that filter wrench....I also found coolant coming from the "weep hole" on my water pump. I ended up dropping my load at our Memphis terminal and getting the water pump replaced. 3 days for the right pump to show up....freaking Cat's!! :angryblue::angryblue:
