Leather seats, nice stereo, cb... very nice. There are some ratty old Freightliners that are still in the system that are being phased out - not everyone gets a Pete. Some KW's out there too.

The 387 is roomy on the inside but harder to drive and has electrical problems. The 379 is compact for sure but has many advantages. TMC is ordering a boatload of new 379's to replace the older trucks. The 387's will probably be reserved for trainers.

thejoker 04-22-2006 02:43 AM

i have a new 387 i prefer it over the 379 much more visibilty than the 379 i've got trainees that have both and that have driven both and they say the 387 is by far the best of the 2 even if your not training but i know guys that train in the 379a but for me if i had to drive one of those to train in i definately wouldn't be training

but i've had 2 387 and i haven't had any electrical problems at all the last one i had i turned it in with 166k and there wasn't anything wrong with it and the brand new one i have runs like a mashed cat but it all depends on how u run the truck

It runs great through the mountains i come from the virginia line to charleston wva. in an hour and 15 minutes with 45000 lbs on the other day it performs great

bu like everything else each to their own

Mr. Ford95 04-22-2006 04:54 AM

So you were averaging 75 mph in a governed truck joker?? Going thru 3 tolls and some good hills.

thejoker 04-22-2006 06:02 AM

on depends what u call a governed truck average 75 thats not an overspeed as long as the truck doesn't go over a certain number it doesn't register an overspeed so there for not a safety violation

thejoker 04-22-2006 06:25 AM

well what i consider charleston is when u reach the kanaugh city twin bridges which is outside of charleston but i'm from that area but it's like chicago it has engulfed the other little towns around but its still charleston to us anyway which is about 82.5 miles long from the boarder to the city

but even that is still possible for sure if u can run a truck i know i've seen me do it just ask tcurr he's followed me through there in his truck

Mr. Ford95 04-22-2006 06:51 AM

I'll take your word for it joker. I've seen some trucks, not TMC, go blasting between Beckley and Charleston looking like a wreck waiting to happen on some of them curves. I usually run with the flow of the cars at about 65-70 and have had trucks pass me like I was tied to a tree. What's it like coming out of the last toll gate crossing over that double bridge before Chelyan in a fully loaded semi?? I cannot stand that piece right there, my pickup dances all over the road as it bounces off the other side of the first bridge. Front tires actually lose contact with the ground and start wheel hopping across the road even when I drop down to 50 mph.

I was gonna say about that hour and 15 min run that you had to be kididng if you came across 64, because it takes a full hour to get to Beckley running 75 all the way along with coming up Sandstone Mtn/Widowmaker. :D

ben45750 04-22-2006 06:51 AM

I know that stretch pretty well...... Charleston, Beckly and Bluefield WV. It's possible to run that stretch in 1hr 15 min. If you know the road and run it often you don't slow down to much. You can allways tell who hasnt ran that road much and who knows the road.

thejoker 04-22-2006 08:02 AM

yeah thats the key is knowing it but if u set up for it u can roll good and steady without any problem but it is different if u got a high load but 1 to 2 feet of the deck is really good mountain freight

yeah at that bridge a jb hunt truck laid one over right there two tuesday's ago it cost me an extra 45 minutes getting home that night i only live about 50 minutes from right there but then again that turn is not bad in a big truck if u know its coming but if not that could usually be the end result

as far as a pickup yeah a little rough not enough weight to hold things together

Sorry to hear that, I really thought T.M.C. trucks were faster than that, as I said that's just about what our trucks are cut back to, and I hate it..

But I guess the slow azz trucks are about the only gripe I have, T.C.W. is a really great company, we drive day cab Peterbilt's some drivers get home about every night, the road drivers "such as me" get home every friday, the company put's us up in motels through the week..

But I hate being out there running as hard as I can in a 70mph speed zone and I can't even do the speed limit.

well i just traded up to this truck and so i am still setting the rewards so since it has so little miles every time i idle for a short period of time it kills my mph reward and sets me back to 66 or 67. i just have to get some more miles on the truck or drive 55 in 13th for a few hours and it will be ok. Patience

WV Mountaineer 04-22-2006 11:25 AM

Ahhhhhhh, the WV Turnpike....country roads take me home to the place I beeeloooooong WV. Mountain MaMa............Just had to chime in guys

tcurr 04-22-2006 11:51 AM

I have run with Joker acrossd there he knows the road very well. I am the other guy that takes a bit longer I am getting more comfortable with it but not nearly as good as joker knows it.

35 Is a fun road to run with it raining at night :)

cableman 04-22-2006 10:42 PM

I was driving the turnpike Thursday while my trainer sat in the jump seat He didn;t think that I could do it. ... He didn't remember that I know the turnpike and all the construction in Charleston area, but what suprised me was all of the construction right there at exit 34 all the wat to the state line. :D :D :D

cableman 04-22-2006 11:35 PM

What a week I had... I drove up to my trainer last sunday night so that we could drive to the consignee monday morning by... We get going deliver to Indy, make a pickup to deliver to Denver CO. We did that by Wednesday... Make a pickup north of Denver and start making our way back to Kansas City, where we unloaded and reloaded and started bookin towards Tuskalouska Alabama where we unloaded and reloaded right around the corner from each other, I guess that won't happen very often. Then back to Fayetteville NC for HT. We mady 3997 to the truck, which I drove 70% of the miles, which my trainer said that I would have been able to do myself, being that I am just in my third week of training.

mudflap276 04-23-2006 12:52 AM

good job cableman, it sounds like you are on the right track. keep up the good work. :D

thejoker 04-23-2006 01:36 AM

good work cableman sounds like your trainer got u up and running yeah no kidding all the construction from their to the state line really sucks me and my trainee hit it 5 times this past week it really sucks

but keep up the good work 8)

rboit33 04-24-2006 09:11 AM

just an update

well was going to update this sooner but my laptop crashed before orientation( dont buy a gateway). arrived in Des moines last Friday, went to orientation on monday, wednesday I finished orientation and expected an older truck but got a 2007 379 pete and a new trlr to go with it.

after going thru the process of getting everything signed out finally left Friday, loaded, delivered today in granite falls NC and now at the house getting a wisdom tooth pulled but will be back out thursday to try some west coasten lol, see yall on the road im in Trk#91772, a nice a shiney one

JACKAL35 04-24-2006 11:59 AM

how much more money can you make in linehaul vs reg.

rboit33 04-24-2006 12:11 PM

line haul vs reg

well since i just started i couldnt tell ya but i think if you work in either div. i think you would be profitable on either side, just that longhaul drvrs are home more freq than longhaul are and they Tarp More Cargo.

flatbedder 04-24-2006 12:34 PM

Did you go out with a trainer? How much experience did you have when you came to TMC?

rboit33 04-24-2006 12:39 PM

nope, i had 5 years flatbed and about 6 years pulling livestock, reefers and dry boxes so they cut me loose after 3 days, but this was one of the first companies i ever worked for that i have gotten along with everyone i met when i first arrived at the motel, its a very different atmosphere there

mudflap276 04-29-2006 11:34 AM

sometimes longhaul works out better since most of them have the enclosed racks and can put their stuff in that which means easier drop and hook. also since the new fontains dont have boxes most linehaul cant pull them.

GoldiesPlating 04-29-2006 12:44 PM

Sorry I've been gone so long! I've missed SO much in all the TMC threads!!! I just got a new laptop so HOPEFULLY I'll be a more frequent contributer!!! I'll try to get on via wireless every chance I get for now until I'm in my own truck and get weekends off!

tcurr 04-29-2006 01:57 PM

Golds how is the training going

cableman 04-29-2006 07:30 PM

This past week my trainer started your week in PA and ended back in NC but seen alot more excitement. I got ahold of the joker just to let him know who my trainer was. Met up with a couple of different trainer-trainee cobos, and got to see one of the guys that was in the orientation class just before me and then one that I went to school with and was in orientation the week after me.

tcurr 04-30-2006 06:24 AM

Hey cable, Joker said he talked to you, we were running together to PA, NJ that night you called.

cableman 04-30-2006 06:44 AM

I guess before long I will be in the mix with ya'll

I am getting ready to head back to Fayetteville in a little bit so that I can make it to New Jersey tonight and on to the consignee by 8 AM

tcurr 04-30-2006 06:49 AM

Yeh I leave in a little bit myself to head to Ill.

Mr. Ford95 05-02-2006 11:44 AM

I'm curious, what is up with TMC in the state of VA?? For the past month, my wife has seen nothing but TMC trucks either wrecked or pulled over by the police between Dulles Airport and Opal, VA. Just saw one this evening half laid over in a median crossover at Opal. Saw 3 about a week ago pulled over with 5 police cruisers and 2 DOT's in their SUV's. I was under the impression TMC drivers would pretty good drivers.........must only be the one's on here that are good, tcurr, joker, cable and von se

I have to say that I am glad that I got to train with someone. I didn't realize how much work goes into load securement. I thought that you can just drop it on the bed, throw a couple of straps/chains and go down the road. Boy was I wrong. TMC not only wants you to secure by what the federal law say but they also want the load extra secured. This will save your life or anothers and keep stuff from falling off of the truck. I learned alot from my trainer and I will learn even more on my own.

One more thing.....when you goto Des Moines take a bathing suit and your laptop. The Baymont Inn that TMC owns has 1 indoor (warm) pool, 2 hot tubs, a steam room, 802.11G wifi and a game room with pool tables. The restaraunt at TMC is only open for lunch so plan to order in or eat vending machine food. (hot pockets, stew, and junk food) Ask for a rent car to get you there and see who you can pick up along the way.

I am cureently located in Minneapolis can we drive personal vehicles down for oreintation? Is there a secure lot for personal vehicles?

Little log problem thing with the DOT a while back. Maybe they are after us!

Mr. Ford95 05-04-2006 09:08 AM

Yeah maybe Von, I'm not saying TMC is bad, just found it odd that they were suddenly getting pulled an awful lot here.

No really, they got chewed up pretty good by the DOT for the drivers logbooks. Maybe the DOT is all over it.

Mr. Ford95 05-04-2006 11:38 AM

Oh yeah Von, I wasn't discounting what ya said, I believed ya. Not good at all.

dont know about you guys but i just got done with my 3rd week on the road solo and about had a meltdown. this is a different ball game when you dont have someone telling you what to do or where to turn and stuff like that. all i can say is be ready and if you have laptops (which i think most of you have) use them have a good mapping program handy. i really dont want to go in to enormous detail about my experiances thus far but i am just having a hard time. it is not all peaches and cream out there. i am just going to stick things out and pray things get better cause it really cant get any worse for me at the moment.

tcurr 05-05-2006 01:23 PM

John c there are those weeks. I had one this week. Everything that could go wrong did. I will give you just monday. Got unloaded at 715 in Ill. Wait 2.5 hours for a load that goes to alabama. 2.5 hour bounce to the steel warehouse from hell. Takes 4.5 hours to get loaded and do not get to deliver tell about 2pm next day and only load available is a 2 day run to baltimore MD and deleware.

Some weeks suck and frankly it just seems to get worse. As far as mapping software I use a garmin 2720 gps and it helps emesly but you will get into big cities and there is nothing that takes away the fear your on ther wrong road a non truck route etc.

Confidence helps this alot give it a bit but you will always have those weeks. Hell I go to the heart of chicago for monday for a two stop delivery only saving grace was I got home thrusday night,.

Shoot me a pm and I can give you my Phone number can try to help if you have any questions etc when out there.
