Central defiantly had the miles. However they have a low CPM and will schedule your loads such that you only have an hour of leway with your HOS to make your apt time. You get stuck in traffic your screwed. Several times they tried to put me on loads that I couldn't legally make then insist I could. TONS of drivers for central drive illegal. Don't do it. Once they wanted me to take a load, drive 10 hours, then immediately make 8 stops each an hour apart. See the problem? I ended up having to take the load because they wouldn't give me anything else, I did the first delivery then sent a message on my QC, out of hours, shutting down. My cell rang immediately, my dispatcher was mad, why did you say your out of hours on your QC!? now I can't move you. (yeah that was the point) 15 minutes later another driver showed up to take my trailer (funny they told me before there was NOONE around I could relay the load to) the last 7 stops where late but after that when I told them I didn't have the hours!
Payroll was always nto paying me for things, you pay for everything with comchecks which they advance from your pay, then forget to reimburse you for. I had to call every week to get load locks, scales, or tolls I paid for reimbursed, sometimes it would take 3-4 weeks to get reimbursed.
almost everything is over the QC, its hard to get ahold of people on the phone.
I was taking home about $600 a week, but I only got home once a month, and they where always trying to cut my hometime short.
They where bearable as a first job. The after hours shop staff although over worked was really cool. "GUY" the shop boss thats there in the day is a total jerk, avoid him if possible. During orientation he says when in doubt call him up, they can help you with anything or direct you to someone who can then you are out no where near a terminal and your truck is having problems and he will hang up on you, and yell at you for wasting his time.
good things? (at least compared to where I work now)
never have to hunt for MTs,
never have to wait for comchecks for scales/lumpers 24/7
they advance you money for all costs out over the road by comcheck. you never make you pay for something out of pocket (allthough they do deduct it from you pay and then theoreticly reimburse it right back)
You can get ahold of any department via qualcom
plenty of miles, I NEVER had to sit
24/7 dispatch, it might not be the best, but at least you don't have to wait 4 hours to be told "call your dispatcher in the morning" which is usually what happens to me now, if I get any response at all!
Cockroach, Hey dude I was a umm evil central lease driver dedicated to Coors for one year before I tossed in my hat; which I shouldn't had done. Here's why:
Everything you described about Central I loved about them. Oh the shop manager in SLC was a big jerk! I can't stand for a company to ride my arse which Central didn't I went every mile for them and busted my log a few times too saves theirs butts due to some noob got lost or ran out of hours and of course fleetmgrs screwing up.
I've had five preloads on my QC in less than three days running time' about 2100 miles total. Which was outside of Coors, 'Kraft loads they couldn't find dedicated drivers and Hearshy load from PA to Denver', I'll never forget that week and got them all done on time. Crazy!
I quit because I became God in my world and fired myself because I thought I wasn't getting enough mile per paid week **caugh 3500 to 4000** <-stupid. I was Cole T. little devil and I did no wrong. All our drop yards at that time I would do yard checks, refuel reefers (not get paid for it) but I saved a National Beef load because the reefer stopped working and I got it repaired in time. Thats was just me in the call of hell, so I got peod really
madly and took off, Another lease driver told me Cole T. had tears in his eyes when I left. Dude I never refused a load or told them no-NEVER! I miss Central badly because I had my way like a big baby, NO RULES!!!!!
Now too all that reads this I have changed from my horrible HOS ways Schneinder has brought me to my knee's and Schneiderized me I now log legal and keep a perfect recap never go over my 14 hour rule. Its sad but true. I even sing a Schneider song every morning before PTI. :P
Okay kidding but if your looking for a company that runs hard and don"t play HOS fairly Central is perfect. I have buddy we team now and I love it just hate all the darn Rules. HEHEHE when I was a trainer under my lease with Central my weekly take home was over 2K and sometimes 3K after my students been with me for two weeks they used to get mad because I keep them for seven weeks or more. Bab bad bad me but they learn how to trip plan and handle the box.
True story about trying to find a mty trailer working for Central I got so upset in SLC not being able to locate a trailer I bobtailed to Cheyanne my planner called me who was also my 'dispatch/fltmgr all in one <-another story,' anyway they made me do a full drug test in SLC which I passed with flying colors. That same day I became so frustrated because they wouldn't let me out the gate I posted ever XXX title over the QC and shop came took my QC keyboard out of the truck for the day. Central is a funny company when your a badboy driver they love you like bratty brother but you play by the fed rules they'll fire you or make you sit until you quit. Dang I wanna go back  Naaa!
