Hey new to the forum, I've been watching it for a while, gathering info and reading some really good posts, and was wondering if any one had any thoughts on L.J. Kennedy? I've been hauling reefer freight for about 5yrs and I know from there website that they are a flatbed company. Never done flat bed work, but I know that I could handle this if need be.

The company I work for is just not working out, miles are rising and dropping, the management/dispatch has changed 3 times in the last 4 years. I'm getting tired of dealing with grocery wharehouses and the like so I thought "perhaps" flatbedding might be a nice change of pace.

Chaining and binding loads doesn't seem that hard, but tarping looks like a pain in the a$$.

Any thoughts would be appreciated on this company

Tarping a load is like wrapping a Christmas present, and is not as hard as it looks! It is a routine and will come to you fast.
I prefer a flat to a van or reefer, but like mostly Oversize, DD or a RGN. I like to sleep at night and still make the money I want to make!!

They have a terminal in Carrolton, Ky as well and no New York city if you do not want to.

L J Kennedy has a terminal in Carrollton.Ky, 1 just North of Pittsburg and 1 in Kearney,NJ. I probably missed 1 but check their site.

I worked out of Carrollton for 3 months, hopefully I can enlighten you a little.

Loads from yard were PRE TARPED, just drop and hook
The BACKHAULS might need to be tarped, but NEVER chained, they run with straps ONLY. I tarped maybe 3 loads in 3 months.

After awhile you will know, or can ask others which customers are actual appointments and which are FCFS. They tend to do a LOT of repeat business so after a short time you'll know the customers and their plus and minuses.

There is no pay for UNtarping, $15 or $25 (depends on reg or local) for tarping. The tarps ARE heavy, LJK only uses 2 tarps. The other drivers are lazy about replacing straps but the shop WILL replace any strap or tarp that is defective.

Trucks go through inspection EACH time you come in the terminal, oil checked, tires thumped, basically a quick pre trip.

Loads from yard are drywall, they are the in house carrier for the drywall plant there in Carrollton.

The hotel they put you in for orientation is VERY nice and within walking distance of several fast food joints. Lunch is PAID FOR, usually went with Mike to the restaurant at the park, nice buffet.

Pay is around 41.5 cpm and I averaged $700-800 a wk net and was home every weekend on regional, even when I was running 2 households.

Most of the trucks are Volvos, set up for 72 mph and I think 435 Hp maybe more. Definitely not the top of the line but not bad overall.

NO NYC for regional drivers, NYC is for the Pa drivers in most cases. They do have a OTR division which might see NYC.

When you spend the night in the truck they pay $15 per night CASH (or on your fuel card if you get back late). That's an extra $60-$75 per week under the table for you. The wife LOVED that

If it wasn't for the fact my arm is weak due to past surgery, I'd still be there. Overall I'd say they are the best company I have worked for. Good $$, Great people, good hometime IF you can handle flatbedding.
