Poster Reputations
 

As a lot of you know, VBulletin has a lot of snazzy little add-ons to spice up a messageboard. One of those is a reputation system which allows you reprobates :D to give positive and negative reputation points to other posters. Over time, this will give a true overview of the board posters, which might be particularly useful to newbies.

To date, I haven't turned that option on, but I have kicked it around for a bit and have the green light if I want to. Question is, do I?

So, I figured I'd see what the board thinks? If I get an overwhelming positive reponse, I might go ahead and do it. There are enough safeguards in there to keep someone from abusing it if they don't particularly like someone. If I do activate it, keep in mind that it can always be deactivated at any time if it starts causing issues.

So, what do you guys think? You want it? Don't want it? Don't care? Think Bill and Opus should reform the Meadownik party and run for president in 3 weeks?

You want to know WHAT I think?
Does that mean I have to have thoughts to think?
Or just think my thoughts and that is what I think?
Is it good to smell smoke when you're trying to think?
Is that just like burning the dust of a heater smell?

Actually, the ability to abuse it is pretty slim. There are a lot of safeguards in place to keep that from happening. I wouldn't turn it on if there wasn't.

I could disagree with that statement. Most people hate me during my first encounter with them, and eventually they realize that I am always right. I can see it being used as a "retaliation" tool. Everyone has something positive to contribute at some point in time, even if they haven't done so in the past. Personally, I won't use it. I don't feel the need to rate people.

It doesn't matter to me. I am an avid fan of CAD and opine from reading what is posted rather than would conjecture from how many green squares they have. :)

Actually, Rev, I'm thinking it could turn out to be fun. Who else wouldn't want titles like:

User is off the chart in the wrong direction and is probably guilty of multiple felonies.

I'm not yet completely sold on using it yet, but if I do, it'll be very light hearted. The way I have it set up so far is that long time posters will carry more weight than newbie posters and you cannot multi-hit a poster. You have to have, at this point, 20 other poster hits before you can hit a poster for a 2nd time and I can change that to whatever I want. So there's no worries about getting gang-banged by anyone and suddenly ending up with a bad rep. And even if the rep is bad, it'll still be part of the funny pages. I guess my biggest reason for considering it is just to liven things up a bit and take advantage of some of the bells and whistles that v-bulletin has. I added the smilies last night, which colors the board a bit more. If I do this, it'll be for the same reason...fun. In the end, this is still just a messageboard and should be just that...fun. :D

Seriously, you mean I have to slam 20 innocent posters before I can slam one who deserves it? Um.... not picking a fight here but, right now we only HAVE about 20 active posters... regardless of what the stats say.
And so, if TWO of them deserve slamming, I can't reach 20 slams, because I can't slam the other innocent ones TWICE until I slam 20 MORE?? Okay, well.... I guess we could dredge up old posts and slam those who aren't HERE anymore. Sorry, but either lower the number dramatically, or this won't work.

I'm all for more fun! But, I noticed that all your examples of "reps" were negative. And I don't think the 20 slam requirement is possible. Other than that.... what do I care? If the same member can't slam me twice without slamming 20 others first, my "street cred" could IMPROVE!! :clap:

Once the nestaligia of it wears off it will be just one more over looked visual aid. IMHO. whatever that is worth, less then 2 cents I suppose.

There's a little scale up in the right hand corner of a post. Click on that to add or subtract reputation points for a poster.

The rep is seen by little green or red balls up on the right hand side of your post. If you're in the green, you're positive. If you're in the red, you're negative. If you mouse over those little balls, it'll tell you what the rep level is associated with.

I took the liberty of inputing a few reps just to see what it looked like. Hobo, I set yours to -500. You're OK with that, right? :)

Everyone is weighted according to things like positive reputation, number of posts, length of time as a member on the board, etc.

Couple of things.

1. A poster has to have 50 posts before they can hit someone's reputation, either positive or negative.

2. You can give 10 reputation hits in 24 hours.

3. You have to hit other people 10 times before you can hit the same person again. So technically, you can hit the same person once a day.

We do reserve the right to shut down the reputation thing at any time and I will probably tweak the numbers as time goes by. At this point, we're just testing out whether it's going to be a good addition to the board or not. Play with it all you want right now and let me know what you think.

To clarify the weight comment, that means that posters that have been here a while, have good reputations, have a lot of posts, etc...their reputation clicks are worth more.

Hobo, I'll change yours back, but before I do, do me a favor first. There is a negative limit before your clicks don't register. Do me a favor and rate someone and let me know if it gives you a success message.

Also, reputations do not have anything to do with warnings, getting banned, put in time out, or anything like that. It's just a little rating system fun, nothing more.

Keep in mind that the ranges are pretty expansive. The top notch range is set at like 5000 points and even the longest, most prolific posters are around the 10 to 12 points or so per hit, so it'll take a while to move up (or down) in the reputations. Yours is around 7 or 8 right now.

For those of you that are asking, here are the reputation explanations. I won't list what the numbers are, other than max and min, but that'll give you an idea of what to expect. Like I said, I want to keep it light-hearted and fun...nothing overly serious and definitely nothing to get worked up about.

-1501 =User is off the chart in the wrong direction and is probably guilty of multiple felonies, genocide, and tearing the tags off mattresses.

? =User has satan worried that he/she's going to take over.

? =User is nearly as bad as it gets. Leave the country. It would be safer.

? =User makes Charles Manson look like the Pope. Lock up your weapons, pets, and sons and daughters!

? =User is on the fast track to hell. Lock up your weapons and your pets!

? =User is infamous around these parts. Lock up your weapons.

? = User probably cheats a poker.

? = User has a checkered past and should take up chess.

0 = User is an unknown poster at this point. Don't let him/her around power tools just yet.

? = User is on the right path. You could probably safely loan them a quarter.

? = User is a trusted source of information and would probably pick up your dry cleaning.

? = User is a distinguished poster and probably helps little old ladies across the street.

? = User is well-known and should trademark his/her name.

? = User is a brilliant poster! Just ask him/her and they'll tell you!

? = User is like a long lost brother or sister. Go ahead an loan them your car.

? = User is a glorious beacon of light and is probably presidential material.

? = User has angels trumpet every post he/she makes.

6000 = User is it! Make no mistake, this is the One! There is no one better! Feel free to bow and grovel and name your children after him/her.
