NCAA Football 2012

What a way to start. Blowouts, upsets, early statements..................

Shocked that OSU actually covered the spread against Savannah St. It was 67.5 points, they won 84-0. I really thought that once Gundy got up by 50 he'd pull everyone(which he did) and SS would score some points back but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th teamers just kept on scoring and shutting out SS.

Nice touch of class by FSU in their big blowout over Murray St. Up 60 points with a minute left in the game and at the 1 yard line they call a Timeout to set up a play to punch in another TD and run up the score. Stay classy there FSU!

Pittsburgh goes down to Youngstown St, PSU loses to Ohio(mild upset there with all the off field distractions that went on leading up to this game) and Texas St over Houston.

Surprised at Texas struggling with Wyoming, Florida and Arkansas struggled but won and Maryland beat William & Mary on a last minute TD 7-6.

The big games, Bama showed they may have a dynasty well intact. USC looked pretty good as did Oregon. Oregon though didn't look so hot with their backups in there. They aren't a very deep team it means. LSU looked pretty solid and have a tough SOB at QB.

Ohio has 3 prominent "okies" on their team. One of their wide recievers that caught a TD pass, Donte Foster from Guthrie, running back Beau Blankenship from Norman North and Tyler Tettleton from Norman North also. He and Beau were teamates and Tyler's dad is Mickey Tettleton who was a catcher in the Major Leagues for a while.

I read today that the offensive coordinator at Houston quit after Saturday's debacle.

OU was pitiful. The defense worked as advertised we just have to get the offense on the same page. The defense pitched a shutout and I think I read that they only allowed 55yds of offense to UTEP. UTEP's TD came off of a blocked punt. Landry spent more time picking himself up off of the carpet than throwing passes it seemed. The recievers look really good, now if them and the QB can just get on the same page. The Juco transfer, Williams looks REALLY good. I don't know if there is such a thing but we seem to have WAY to many RB's. I'll be at the Florida A&M game, hopefully it won't turn into another Savannah State.

Bama looks like an NFL team. They looked unbeatable, ALL YEAR! I love their freshman RB, he reminds me of Adrian Peterson when he was a freshman, just about the same size and running style.

Glad it's finally here, now if we can just get the weather to cooperate, it is 104 here today! ICK!

Tennessee did well with their first game. I hope that we can get back to playing football with this new coach. We will see how well they can play when we go against one of the major SEC schools.

I guess he's, (Dooley), is really on the HOT seat. Hopefully they'll be decent this year. The rest of the country needs some help knocking Bama and LSU down a peg or two ;)

Mr. Ford95 09-04-2012 08:26 PM

LSU is very vulnerable to the likes of Auburn, SC, GA and even Miss St IF it's in Stark-vegas. I just don't see them having an offense that can manage the game any better than they did last year. Their D carried the load last year and will need to again with less play makers than last year, sounds funny that a Les Miles team is going to have to win with defense.

Dooley should not be on the hot seat this year yet he is in Rocky Top land. He's been working on putting a winner on the field now he's looking to build on that yet the Big Orange fans want them winning the SEC yesterday. That is all I heard about on the Friday and Saturday radio talk shows for football 2 weeks ago in Gatlinburg. Dooley must win this year, UT needs to win the SEC East this year or Dooley needs to go.............tough crowd. They looked good at times against a piss poor NC State team. They just need to put it all together for 4 quarters each week now instead of here and there.

Nice to see Frank Solich get another nice feather in his cap type of win for a little school like Ohio. Even if it was a wounded PSU they beat, a win is a win.

Looks like Houston misses Case Keenum, just a horrible loss right there to Texas St with very little offense. No surprise if the report is true that he quit.

I was shocked at how bad OU played offensively. I took them to cover the spread.

Bama is gonna be tough to beat and their QB has at least 1 more year left with an RB that is a freshman already running wild. If Saban can keep putting a strong D on the field year in and year out, the nation better look out. They could have a strangle hold on the Waterford Crystal football for a few more years. Keep it up and people will start going Bear who?

You ought to hear it around here. People have short memories.......not remembering the Blake, Schnellenburger days.

Mr. Ford95 09-05-2012 09:24 PM

The Georgia fans have been saying for how many years now that Mark Richt is on the hot seat? Haven't heard it this year.......yet. Dooley is only in his 3rd year on the job and the previous 2 years they have been playing a tough SEC schedule. Both years they saw LSU and Bama and last year also saw Arkansas. Those 3 teams were the top 3 teams in the entire SEC. Obviously they see Florida, Georgia and SC every year but this year they have Mizzou on the schedule, Bama again. I see the possibility of 7 wins for them this year but if they can put it together I don't see any reason they can't knock off SC, and Florida too. I would be shocked if they knock off Bama and Mizzou. Not sure on Georgia.

Unfortunately Big Game Bob has a rep following him. He can get there but he can't win it. Forget that he has gotten them to the big games, he's not winning them so that's not good enough, time to replace him. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for, these Monday morning coaches may find the next coach is even worse. Ask Nebraska how that worked out for them when they fired Solich. Some not so good years and even now, they aren't the Big Red Machine from years past. They couldn't stand 1 .500 season and worked to send him packing even after Solich put together a 9-3 final year with a return to the polls. Little did they know the year's that followed would be subpar.

Exactly! It's funny that a 10 wind season is sub-par. I understand the getting spoiled part, but you can't win EVERY game ever year. We'll be alright, until we lose one "unexpectedly".

Mr. Ford95 09-06-2012 08:39 PM

I do wonder when the NFL mentality on coaches came about in NCAA football. It used to be that NCAA coaches had a lot more leash, a lot of them at the big time schools were lifer's even if they had a rough season here and there. Now it's like the NFL, 1 bad season and your out at these big time schools. There is no more patience to let the coach build or rebuild. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that guys like Saban roll into Bama and all of a sudden they go from a 7-6 first year to nearly winning the SEC and playing for the national title. Everyone expects their coach to be able to do the same and that just ain't going to happen but they want a change anyways.

robertt 09-07-2012 10:58 AM

That's Stoops' downfall. He won the National Championship his second year and now people around here wonder why he hasn't done it every year since! He's ONLY been back to the National Championship game 3 times since then, albeit we got spanked, but at least we were there. I'm sure alot of other teams would have loved to be there too just for the chance to play.

Mr. Ford95 09-07-2012 08:54 PM

Yep and the sad part is, that title was won with certain assistant coaches that are no longer there. Same could happen with Bama, if a couple of assistants leave it could all be over for Saban. It's not just the player turnover, you can overcome that with good recruiting, it's hard to replace good coaches these days. Look at FSU, they were one of the top teams in the 90's and early 2000's until all the assistants started getting head coaching gigs elsewhere. FSU quickly went from the top to mid pack. What have those other coaches done since leaving FSU? Not a lot outside of Mark Richt having a decent team year in and year out.

robertt 09-13-2012 10:45 AM

I was reading the paper today and their is an article with OU's new stud RB, Damien Williams, old JUCO coach. He says OU has no idea what they have in him. I would tend to agree. From what I have seen he is the real deal. His old coach said Williams use to get the ball 40 to 50 times a game and just got better as the game progressed. Granted it's JUCO, but your still getting chased and hit. As of today Williams is leading the country in Yds per carry. He only had 10 carries last week and I'm not sure about the week before at UTEP, but he's rolling right along that's for sure. Last years stud, Dominique Whaley still has a noticeable gimp. I hope he can fully recouperate and pick up where he left off. Looking forward to the K-State game a week from this Sat at home. We have a bye this week, I hate it when that happens!

Mr. Ford95 09-13-2012 07:36 PM

Maybe they are simply gun shy about giving a back the ball that many times?

How about Gene Chizik getting ate up by the media in Alabama? They were laying into him on blogs pretty harshly last week and the game at Miss St was still in the 4th quarter. Now it's come out that the Miss St players knew the plays the Auburn offense was running........and Chizik had the gonads to state that he wasn't worried about it. Umm, come Iron Bowl week you might be very worried. Saban's team doesn't need you to be gifting them the game, they can straight throttle you without knowing a single play. Of course Chizik is on a very thin line right now from what I hear. He doesn't have many supporters and a losing season could be the death knell for him on The Plains. He has 1 National Title but at the cost of not developing younger players. He had a QB out there at Miss St that looked like a freshman in high school. Through 3 quarters of play he had more completions to MSU than his own team. He was 1-7 with 2 INTS and -3 yards on that single completion. The offensive line was downright offensive, it looked like a Chinese fire drill most of the time when it came to blocking. Chizik blamed last season's failure's on Tommy Tuberville, big mistake apparently, the fans were not amused considering Tuberville was well liked by the fans and the fans aren't dum-dums, you've had 3 years to recruit Chizik. What's his excuse this year I wonder? Could get ugly if they start 0-3 with La-Monroe coming in, speaking of.......

Arkansas fell to La-Monroe last week in OT at The Rock.

FSU might have covered the record spread of 70.5 over Savannah St had the game gone the distance properly. They won 58-0 but an act of God, might have been mercy being shown by him, the game was called off after a second lightening delay in the 3rd quarter. It was 48-0 in the 2nd when the first delay hit and the refs decided to use a running clock to try to get the game in. Even so, it looked like FSU may still have covered but someone else intervened. Had it gone the distance and no running clock used, it would have been 84-0 heading into the 4th quarter with ease.

Looks like FSU is for real, they laid a heck of a spanking on Wake Forest. Too bad Doak holds 92K but it only had about 65-70K there. Tough times it looks like. Speaking of, how about the turnout at Miami yesterday:

USC goes down at Stanford for the 4th straight year, something that has never happened in that rivalry.

Bama looks completely unbeatable, they destroyed Arkansas who appeared to give up after going down 38-0.

LA-Monroe nearly did it again at Auburn. A missed FG saved Auburn in OT.

Oregon looks great against such inferior opponents, wonder how they will look in the Pac-12 games........

VT gets upset at lowly Pitt. Not just upset but embarrassed. The Chokies make another early season appearance.

UVA got lambasted at GT, that one got out of control early, guess they are just a pretender.

UT-UF turned into a good game there. UF slapped Dooley's boys down in the end though. How does UT respond?

Mr. Ford95 09-30-2012 07:52 PM

What a Saturday!!!

WV-Baylor was incredible. Both sides were setting records. Stamp Geno Smith's name on the Heisman at this point. That was NCAA Football 2013 worthy right there, he went all video game style on the Baylor D. I did love the commentators, Baylor is running a 3-4 D, they need to pressure Smith. Hey dingo's, if they are already in a pass D and can't stop the pass then what leads you to believe taking guys out of pass coverage to blitz is going to fix it? They are already beating the 8 guys you have in pass D so let's take 2-3 away and see if that stops them from completing passes........yeah bright idea.

UNC goes nuts on Idaho, it was 45-0 at the half in a monsoon.

Speaking of monsoon, the Southern Miss-Louisville game was unreal. Good thing it was astro turf, half the field had water standing on it ankle deep.

Big Orange nearly pulled the big upset on UGA in another shootout game.

DOOK gets their first ACC win in something like 3 years over Wake Forest.

How about Mike Leach giving Oregon a good fight till the 2nd half?

Arkansas got flat spanked at TAMU and now they head to Auburn who looks like they may have found a little something against LSU.

LSU nearly got hoodwinked by Towson..........

Bama just keeps keeping on.

As a life long Vol fan myself, that was the worst season I can remember! Now that UT has given "The Dools" the boot I'm hoping for better times with Butch Jones.

Jackrabbit379 12-28-2012 05:53 PM

What a messed up, disappointing season. Or well maybe for some.
I figured Arkansas would have struggled with coach Smith but I didn't realize that John L Smith was THAT bad.
OU did good but still laid a couple goose eggs. I figured the sooners would have been top notch with mike stoops back but maybe another year.
And Alabama is back in it again. I don't know who to root for. I'd like to see a rare team win but I don't care for Notre dame. Between a rock and a stump.
If ND can spread the field, they should win. Not sure if that would be a good thing.
Baylor did a number on ucla last night. Not sure what happened in the last month but Baylor found a defense.

robertt 12-28-2012 06:25 PM

I think Baylor is going to be a force to be reckoned with, in the near future anyway. OU is NOT ready for the "Big Stage". We don't recruit well enough, I don't know what the deal is. We need some linebacking help bigtime. I still say we don't have that killer instinct. We'll see what happens next year when Bell take over at QB. He's alot more of a Rah Rah kind of guy where Landry Jones was so blahse' about everything. Bell could be the difference who knows. Sometimes it just takes 1 little thing to make all the difference in the world. The "team" might suck but I think Bell is going to be an awesome Player/QB. The Bowl game will be interesting. IF, and it's a big IF, IF OU comes to play they can/will beat A&M. If they show up and start turning over the ball, making stupid turnovers, or let Mizel do what he wants, they're going to get a spanking big time. Their won't be any playing half assed and still being able to win against these guys. Sumlin is going to have them fired up, especially since he's only 3 or 4 yrs removed from OU's staff.

Bielema will make Arkansas a force pretty quick I would think. They're going to be running the ball, that's for sure.

I think I would rather see ND win instead of Bama. I could really care less but if I had my druthers, ND. I can't stand Saban but you gotta give it to him, he wins! I keep hearing that they are worried about him going back to the NFL but I think he learned his lesson with that. Unless his arrogance or the challenge of it tell's him that he can make his way work in the NFL, I think he stays in the College game. I think he would go to another College team before he went back to the NFL.

Mr. Ford95 12-28-2012 09:48 PM

If OU can hold down Manziel for 4 quarters then you can beat that Saban will immediately be on the phone to Stoops, "Hello..." I doubt it happens.

Arkansas is in major shambles, like Miss St circa 2005 shambles. They are torrible. Bielema can take the easy route by picking up a ton of JUCO players or actually build something to last by recruiting AND playing freshmen next year. He will need time, will he get that time? Running the ball in the SEC is a foreign language, particularly the way Bielema is used to running the ball. The Big Ten style against the SEC teams has always gotten hammered by the SEC speed. He did zero building at Wisconsin, Barry Alvarez retired and the parts were already in place, all Brett had to do was replace the parts as needed. Now he has to actually build a program...........

Saban back to the NFL.............rumor is Cleveland has talked and Saban is listening. My gut feeling, he will stay at Bama for a while. Why leave again when you know your successful AND making great money where you are? There is a reason guys like Eddie Robinson, Joe Paterno and Frank Beamer just to name a few have hung around college and never gone to the pro's. Very few good college coaches have gone on to the pro's and lasted. Jimmy Johnson may have been the only one with great success.

golfhobo 01-08-2013 03:12 AM

So, here I am watching the BCS "title" bowl game and what a bust.

Notre Dame (a 2nd tier team at BEST...) is losing badly to an SEC team (or so I think.) Point is... Notre Dame shouldn't even BE in this league. ... And they're NOT!

TOO many bowl games. TOO much "inter-league" ratings. I can't believe I'm wasting my time this way!

Georgia should be playing Alabama! Or LSU! ANYBODY with a serious program!

Best reason I can think of for a "playoff" system for the BCS.

Mr. Ford95 01-11-2013 10:27 PM

I really think Oregon vs Bama would have been a better game than ND. Unfortunately ND took care of business with a schedule that on paper was one of the best in the country. They beat a highly ranked OU team, a Stanford team that won the Rose Bowl and finished what, top 5? They didn't play a single team outside of the power conferences(not including the indy teams.) Of the teams ND played, only Miami(self imposed bowl restriction) Wake Forest and BC did not go to a bowl game, all 3 out of the ACC which ND sorta joins now. Of the teams Bama played, 6 failed to make a bowl game and 1 of those great wins was over a 2nd division team. Georgia had 7 teams on their schedule who didn't play in a bowl and 1 win over a 2nd division team also. So again, on paper ND belonged, IMO and I felt this way before the game even started, they didn't belong. Their schedule in reality wasn't as great as it looked on paper. Even in a playoff system they could have been who Bama got for the title as Bama won a de-facto national semi-final game over Georgia to get there. The whuppin that ND suffered just goes to show how far ahead the SEC is vs the rest of the country.

I do agree with next year's title game, "experts" already have Bama vs Ohio State pegged. Urban Meyer is going to quickly change the way Big Ten teams play going forward. Michigan already did that and other are quickly looking to follow. They have no choice with Urban bringing the SEC flavor to Columbus in a hurry.

I do agree about too many bowl games. I've been believing that for the last 10 years as they seem to add 1 additional every year. It's too the point that teams 6-7 are getting exemptions to play in bowl games. No team with a losing record is supposed to be playing in them even if they meet the 6 win criteria unless the NCAA waives that stipulation. Cut out the Nobody Cares Bowl, the Are You Serious Bowl, the Get Real Bowl, etc. I'm a traditionalist, bring back the original bowl names, Peach, Tangerine, Citrus.
