College ball

Well, another exciting season!
All I am gonna say is, Go Red Raiders!! http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/happy/happy0053.gif
I wonder who will go all the way. Bama? Georgia? USC? Texas?, ugh! Penn St? How about Utah? They are 10th. http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/happy/happy0053.gif

Texas vs. Tech is gonna be good. So is Georgia vs. Florida. My wife is from Georgia, and she is beside herself.http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/happy/happy0053.gif

It should be interesting as the season rolls on!

Twilight Flyer 10-27-2008 04:16 PM

Man, the Big 12 is touch this year. What, 4 teams in the top 10? 2 or 3 in the top 5? :eek2:

I'm an Iowa State fan. We're probably going to have to become a Division II school to complete anymore, unless Chizek figures this thing out and turns it around. :angryblue:

Snowman7 10-27-2008 04:37 PM

You guys ain't gonna like this but I don't see Penn State losing and I don't see Texas and Bama both running the table and winning their conf championship games so I think you're gonna see another Big 10 rep in the BCS Championship Game. The other school could be any number of 1 loss teams. If anyone else goes undefeated it'll be Texas.

That's because they always have an easy schedule, till they play each other.http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/...tongue0001.gif

I could see Penn State playing in the Championship.
I hope Tech beats Texas!http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/...ilgrin0040.gif

It wouldnt surprise me to see Penn State vs. USC in the BCS Championship game. (hope not)http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/...tongue0001.gif

All schools schedule easy non conference games. Its a matter of survival. People have blasted my Buckeyes for their non conf schedule but this decade alone they have played home and away against Texas and now USC. All three of those schools deserve credit for making that happen. You have to remember not only would OSU be careful about their non conference schedule but if you had National championship hopes would you put the Buckeyes on your schedule if you didn't have to?

I love the tradition of the bowls and I love the week to week drama of the current system but it does have flaws that would be fixed by a playoff. But does that mean a playoff system is better? The regular season would lose alot of weekly meaning and fun. A playoff system rewards the team that is hot at the end just like pro sports. The current system rewards year long consistency. Its not easy to go undefeated no mater what conference you're in. Ask USC. Every year there are 10-15 qualified "playoff teams" and maybe 6-8 "contenders" for the championship. Under the current system someone will be left out. In a playoff someone could get hot and win out, like last years NY Giants did in the super bowl. I'm just preaching the merits of both ways and not really sure which way I want it. I just want to be entertained. I think I like the tradition of college ball and I'll watch the NFL for the playoffs.

Jackrabbit379 10-27-2008 05:29 PM

I agree, Snowman, I just thought I'd throw that in there.
It's fun, that's for sure! My wife watches her Georgia Bulldogs, but she aint like me;she cant just sit and watch college football all day.http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/happy/happy0053.gif

Another reason why I love college football. Anything can happen at any time.

Jackrabbit379 10-28-2008 04:17 PM

I found out something last night. A briefing on the BSC rankings. Arnie Spanier had Richard Billingsley on his show. Richard Billingsley works for BCS.
The way the BCS rankings work, is what your rank is vs the opponent's rank, strength of schedule. If you are #10, and you beat #1 team, you could jump in front of the #9 team, even after the #9 team won, because #9 team beat a non-ranking opponent. For an example, Alabama dropped this week, and Penn State jumped, because Penn State beat, Ohio State (then, #5), and Alabama beat Tennessee (then #42) He talked about the Top 3, which all are currently undefeated. (Tex, Penn St, Bama) It could be very interesting if all Top 3 teams win all out. He said, "Dont be surprised if "your team" drops in the rankings at the end of the season, yet they won. It's all depending on the strength of opponent." He said that Margin of Victory is not in the computers. He said, "It does not matter how bad you blow someone out. It's all on the strength of the opponent." I believe him, but it's hard to believe.

I'd still like to know why some conferences are non-BCS. (Boise St, Utah, etc) Wonder if that means that those teams have not won a BCS Championship, since BCS has been around. I've never understood that.

I won't be taking the kids to the Tech game because it will be a freaking madhouse there. But you better believe we'll be watching. I tried to watch the New Orleans game this weekend but Doug was home visiting the kids and he was like...I didn't know you liked football. I was thinking...:roll3:...there's a lot of things you don't know about me but..are you serious? How in the world can you not know that?!?! I think TTU has a good team this year. I have no clue how it will all turn out...but I love to watch it! My little sister is a Husker...it was great getting to razz her a couple of weeks ago. My college didn't have a football team so I have adopted TTU since being here in Lubbock. I love their all black uniforms. They have been selling "blackout" shirts here like crazy...it should be an awesome site to see.

Jackrabbit379 10-28-2008 04:54 PM

Cool.
Wreck em Tech!
When I get to the warehouse tonight, I may have to go over to the Flyin J, and see if they have any black shirts in there.

Mr. Ford95 10-28-2008 11:11 PM

Jack, Boise St and Utah are not in conferences recognized as being Championship worthy in Football. Only 6 conferences are considered BCS worthy in D-1. ACC, Big East, Pac-10, Big 12, Big-10, and the SEC. It's all a big joke because those are considered the money maker conferences for the NCAA.

What's stupid about the SOS(Strength of Schedule) is that the Buckeyes were ahead of USC after USC destroyed them. Hopefully this past weekend fixed that but it was a stupid flaw that made no sense. USC has played a much stronger schedule than OSU thus far across the board.

Jackrabbit379 10-29-2008 04:08 PM

That's makes sense. Got it.

BlooMoose 11-03-2008 01:52 PM

Did ANYBODY here watch the UT vs. Texas Tech game Friday night?!?! It was absolutely unfreakingbelievable!! UT is seeing the Red now!!!! We wrecked 'em (39 to 33)!!!! And it was beautiful..it was nearly an upset...and I would have cried real tears!!!! WE DID IT...upset the No. 1 team!!!!

Twilight Flyer 11-03-2008 01:56 PM

Yep, and that was the worst thing in the world that could happen to Penn State. Tech is now #2 and they are saying there's something like 6 teams that could have 1 loss and would be ahead of an undefeated Penn State in the BCS standings when all is said and done.

Jackrabbit379 11-03-2008 03:00 PM

It's crazy. Oh well. The Shorthorns lost. That's what matters.

Jackrabbit379 11-03-2008 03:31 PM

Coach Fulmer is gone at the end of this year.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3679810
They were once a big powerhouse!

Tim Tebow reminds me of Brady. He's good, but I'd like to see him taken off on a stretcher.

Mr. Ford95 11-03-2008 08:40 PM

Tebow could play LB with his size.

Sucks for PSU, they might be the only undefeated team left with a shot at the National Title outside of Utah and Boise St and not get a shot. Maybe that will finally be enough to scrap the BCS. The computers don't like them very much in these first 3 weeks. The only thing that would look right, if Alabama, Texas Tech and PSU all run the table. You can say that Texas Tech deserves to be in for running the guantlet and knocking off 4 Top 10 teams in a 5 game stretch. Alabama would then get in if they win out over a Top 5 Florida. Who has PSU beaten? An OSU team that isn't as good as advertised.

Twilight Flyer 11-03-2008 09:50 PM

And if Ohio State loses another game, Penn State is finished for a BCS title shot.

And we at Oregon State destroyed any hopes of a national title for the University of Spoiled Children........:rofl:

I dont think I've ever heard that one before.
It wouldnt surprise me if USC did make it to the big game. They always find a way.

Snowman7 11-10-2008 05:04 PM

A gunfight over Bama LSU game leaves two people dead. Unbelievable!

They weren't even at a bar or together for the game. The victims drove to the shooters trailer looking for a fight!

Mackman 11-10-2008 08:20 PM

How about PSU losing to Iowa. WTF is that all about.

Mr. Ford95 11-10-2008 10:04 PM

Iowa has had PSU number the last few years, what this is the 4th or 5th straight loss to Iowa? Really thought PSU was good enough to go undefeated but Iowa snuck up on them.

I don't know that I would call USC the land of Spoiled Children, that place is in an ugly section of town. Walked into a McDonald's that had an armed security guard at the doors just a block and a half to the south of the Coliseum in the middle of the day. Told me all I needed to know about that area of town, stay out if you cherish your life once it gets dark. I can't see why anyone would want to go there, UCLA looked like heaven compared to USC.

Jackrabbit379 11-11-2008 04:52 PM

Heck yeah man. USC is right in the heart of South Central. Sounds lovely, doesnt it? :p

Yeah, Penn State got caught with their pants down.

Jackrabbit379 11-15-2008 11:31 PM

Man, Florida took care of South Carolina. http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/...nfused0068.gif

Big Diesel, looks like The Beavers are in the run for the Rose Bowl.

I think the USC vs Stanford game will be good.http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/cool/cool0016.gif They just started.

Shhhhhhhhh........ Still have to get by Arizona next week in Tucson, and the Civil War against Oregon at home....................

Jackrabbit379 11-16-2008 01:40 AM

I tell ya what.... the Civil War is as big as any other rival in the country. I've seen the game, and it aint no love lost for what I could tell.

Should be interesting the next couple weeks for everybody.

Snowman7 11-16-2008 04:13 AM

I think Fla will beat Bama and play for the championship. But I dont know who theyll play. If Oklahoma beats TT that will make a real mess between OK, TX, TT and USC. Its going to be a wild finish!

Jackrabbit379 11-16-2008 04:36 AM

Yeah, same here. I think Florida will run away with a big win. Bama still has the Iron Bowl though. What if Auburn happens to beat Bama? Will that throw a kink in Bama's hose?
If Oklahoma beats Texas Tech, the rankings will be a big cluster you-know-what. :p

I was watching some of the Ohio State game/flipping back and forth also watching Michigan. Both were good games. Michigan got stomped. It was snowing too.

Snowman7 11-23-2008 03:09 PM

So now what? OK beats TT who beat TX who beat OK. Can any of these schools get to the big game? What about USC do they have a shot? Buckle your seatbelts!

OHHHHHHHHH....the humiliation...OK didn't just beat TTU...We got spanked!!!

Jackrabbit379 11-25-2008 05:23 PM

Yeah, that's what happens when you play at Norman (OK). Bob Stoops is 60-2 at home. http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/...scared0015.gif
I dont know what Texas Tech's "total offense" ranks, but it's one of the best in the nation. Only thing, Texas Tech has no defense. I like Texas Tech, but the defense has never been anything like their offense. Also, Mike Leach used to be Bob Stoop's right hand man at OU. Bob Stoops knew exactly what Mike Leach had up his sleeve. OU sniffed out nearly every play that Texas Tech ran. They also played at OU. Baylor aint no slouch. I dont know if I would laugh or cry if Baylor upsets Texas Tech

Snowman...if OU beats OK State, it will be a 3-way tie in the Big 12 South. How they will sort that out is beyond me. I dont know how they will work it out if OK State beats OU. They are playing in Stillwater this year. If that happens, OK State beating OU, that might put Texas Tech in the Big 12 game. Who knows
I'm sure USC has a shot, just like anyone else. They always find a way. You also have Florida, and Bama. I'm sure Bama will beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl, and Florida should be able to take care of FSU. Of course, both of those games are big emotional rivals, anything can happen. Oregon State and Penn State should play in the Rose, if Oregon State wins their Civil War.
It's gonna be interesting to see how they work this madness out.

You just like saying that.

Mr. Ford95 11-26-2008 09:31 AM

Actually TT's D has gotten much better from what it was last year. They shutdown Texas for most of the game, something OU couldn't do. It's just that OU's offense is that darn good. Easy to stop TT's, sit in a pass defense and let your 3-4 guys up front stop all the runs if you know they are up to the task. If they find an open receiver on a pass, make a sure tackle. It didn't help that TT kept turning the ball over and it lead to OU TD's, that's what made it look so bad, they had 2 or 3 TD's that were a drive of less than 5 yards.

If it's a 3 way tie, the Big 12 South Champ will be decided by who has the higher BCS ranking. 2 way tie, it goes to who won the head to head matchup.

Jackrabbit379 11-26-2008 06:47 PM

Very well said, Mr Ford.
Mike Leach is not very conservative. That can be a bad thing, and I wish a lot of other coaches would be the same at times. He went for it on 4th down, twice. I know that he hates to punt. Of course, both times, failed. That, and turnovers, like you said..

Mr. Ford95 11-26-2008 08:38 PM

That's why I like Mike, he is a surefire gambler that isn't afraid of possibly failing to get a first down or TD on 4th down and giving the other team a short field. It's why more kids are wanting to go play in Lubbock for him, he likes to have fun out on the field. If things go bad, yes he will be upset/disappointed but he won't jump down your throat and then bench you like a Bob Stoops would. I mean, nothing against Stoops, I like what he has down at OU with his way of running things but I would rather play for Leach.

Jackrabbit379 11-27-2008 03:22 AM

I just noticed that USC and Notre Dame play this week. I'd forgotten that game is also a big rival.
How many points ya think USC will hang on the Irish. http://img3.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/...ferent0018.gif

ironeagle_2006 11-27-2008 05:16 AM

At le3ast 50 if not more since the Irish Defense right now could not even manage to pour pee out of a boot with the directions on the heel.

vavega 11-27-2008 11:50 AM

hey snowman! care to have a friendly bet on the BCS championship game?

Snowman7 11-27-2008 01:27 PM

hmmm, kinda early yet isnt it?

What did you have in mind?

Your not just trying to open old wounds about last year's bet with Flyer are you? If yes then bite me! If no then excuse my paranoia!
