No, if you actually click on "GO" and the gadget does the route, then you see the actual distance. In my case (GARMIN C330) I can only choose between "shortest" and "fastest" mode but the distance is pretty accurate. I don't know how I drove before without it. It's like having your own personal navigator
I once sat at a dock in the middle of an industrial area and decided to go grab something to eat. I went into Receiving and asked the guy there if he knew of any fast food places around. Within practically 20 seconds the unit found a McDonald's 1.5 miles away! I dropped the trailer and bobtailed to this fast-food joint following the spoken directions of my "navigator".
