I live in NY and all I can say is BS. My wife says, as they are coming to apply for the license, have a lot of immigrant trucks and deport em on the spot.

State election officials are worried that Gov. Spitzer's plan to allow illegal aliens to obtain driver's licenses will make it difficult for them to catch people voting illegally.

"There has been concern," state Board of Elections spokesman Lee Daghlian told The Post.

While it is up to the local boards of election to determine who is eligible to vote, it is rare that election officials check into a person's legal status, particularly if they have identifying information on their voter-registration form like a driver's license or the last four digits of a Social Security number, Daghlian said.

In order to register, a person must sign an affidavit stating that they are an American citizen.

"You assume that people don't lie, and that's what the form says," Daghlian said. "It's an affidavit you sign under penalty of perjury."

But Daghlian concedes, "Nobody checks it" to determine its validity.

At the polls, voters are asked to show some form of photo ID, like a driver's license, to prove their identity, Daghlian said.

"I suppose it would be [tough to catch] if someone wanted to take advantage of the system and try to get a number of people registered who aren't citizens and went ahead and got them driver's licenses," he said.

I no longer know WHICH party represents my views! I guess I"d be labeled as a "Conservative Democrat." (The Carolinas are famous for them!) But, I just can't find a party or candidate that doesn't get my values all MIXED up in their platform! :shock:

Um.... not EXACTLY! If you're really interested in this, reread my links. What the NY governor was TRYING to do was different. The compromise is closer to what those states have done. And, also note that about 40 states are against this type of measure, and those you cited are following the government guidelines for distinguishing between an I.D and a driver's license. (Because they are forced to, under the Homeland Security Acts.)

I'm not sure, at this point, whether it was oriented towards gaining VOTES or just forcing an acceptance of illegal aliens. Or, perhaps, an honest attempt at lowering insurance costs (which won't work!)

But, it was a BAD idea, especially where security is concerned. Illegals are NOT gonna come out of the shadows and identify themselves so they can PAY exhorbitant insurance rates! Would YOU? :roll:

And they should have NO right to a driver's license, especially if it can give them voter status (motor-voter rules.)

Life is TOUGH for illegals in this country.... and well it SHOULD be! ANY attempt to use citizen funding to make their life easier, is wrong! As is ANY attempt to "accomodate" them rather than export them!

In Israel, for example, an "illegal alien" is a Palestinian who must live in a refugee camp! Same goes for MANY european (and East Asian) countries. They don't LIKE it, but the alternative is complete disregard for Sovereignty and borders on a Worldwide scale!

If you want to discuss the benefits of that theory, I am game. But, as it stands, I don't think it would work! America has one of the most LIBERAL immigration policies in the World! Those who want to circumvent it, or abolish it, are breaking the law..... and distracting our security forces, thereby lowering our ability to protect our citizens from certian "terrorist" elements that wish us harm.

They are NOT "pioneers," they are cowards who won't stay and change the policies of their OWN government! They are "mercenaries." What POSSIBLE good can they do for OUR country??

They have less backbone than a Liberal Democrat, and more "self righteousness" than a Conservative Republican! But, it's not really about politics. We will ALL "pay" for their existence.

Although, I don't agree with it..... driving in this country is a Privilege.... not a RIGHT! They have NO right to it, and they haven't earned even the privilege! And many of them have certainly ABUSED it!

Let them WALK! Or take buses. They don't want to pay taxes, or get licensed, or buy insurance..... so let them WALK!

Don't buy that insurance bullshit. I live 30 miles from the US/Mexico border in NM. Do you really think these people who break in to this country against the law and drive their cars with no license against the law and someone really thinks that these POOR people are going to buy insurance just because they get a driver's license? Bullshit. The DMV in our county estimates that 76% of drivers here don't have any insurance. This county is 95% hispanic, I don't know the percentage of illegals, but its pretty high as we are a major agricultural county.
