The 55 mph speed limit was put in place due to a perceived shortage. It didn't work then and it won't work now. The ATA is pushing this due to so resistance for the government mandated speed limiters. It is a way to get in the back door. The national speed limit didn't work before and it won't work now. It will reduce efficiency in moving freight. It will put further pressure on a perceived driver shortage.

Go to Australia. They have one of the toughest speeding laws. The fine is like $1,000 and after 2 you loose your license automatically for a year.

I'm not sure on the amounts or time but it's really really hefty. The reason I know is because I was on a tour and the whole highway was doing the speed limit which I thought was strange and asked about it.
