I loved everything about my 8V92, except the fuel mileage. Lots of other people I know got good service from them too. Mine would out-pull my Dad's 3406 Cat or any 400 BC Cummins he had.
But under 4 MPG almost killed me then, and would be worse now. Then I calculated I would have saved $500 per month on fuel with a Cummins. Now? My first truck was a Chevy Titan 90 with an 8V71. 90 injectors and 2600 RPM, row that RTO 913 like there's no tomorrow. |
You guys convinced me to get an older truck to start out with. I found another 84 peterbilt daycab 359 with a rebuilt detroit 8v92, 13 speed. I'm going to try to go look at it on Monday. Its been sitting for 3 years, but he told me he drives it around the shop to keep everything lubricated. So hopefully it'll be a keeper! Just so you know it is a 2 cycle motor with a turbo and a blower(supercharger) with a very complicated gear train on the front. Great fuel and oil eater. |
maybe he can find a nice 903

I have found that when a problem is difficult find or diagnose, it is usually something simple. If it were anything serious I am sure that CAT would have found it. I agree with keeping an eye on it.

I looked at the truck over the weekend and its in real good condition for being a 84. Practically the whole truck has been rebuilt from front to back including the engine and trans. I'm going to look it over again this week sometime.
What do you guys think about running that truck for about year, saving money for a down payment for a newer one with a sleeper? After all the guy will let it go for about 5-6k. :D |

That 92 will burn so much fuel it will bankrupt you in a year.
