You have to use tile designed for exterior use. I have two or three tiles that I bought as samples last fall and have been outside all winter and have no cracks. There no thicker than a regular tile. If I remember correctly it's that they either have porcelain or don't have porcelain. I could see where vibration would effect the grout though, causing cracks.
Oh well just a thought.

Doghouse 05-16-2008 02:01 AM

You could use a silicone grout that has sand in it. They sell it at Cheapo Depot and Blowes.
If you place a hard surfaced floor, what will you use for sound deadener?

RostyC 05-16-2008 02:12 AM

Rubber mat and then do a thick mud bed. We'd have to cut a hole in the roof for Rev to stick his head out though. He can then steer with his feet.

geomon 05-16-2008 02:42 AM

I dunno Rev, even w/ that foil insulation on the underside, that bare metal covered with black RhinoLiner sure sounds cold and rough on the tootsies :D. My preference would be a wood floor over insulation as it insulates (temp & sound) and looks nice, but... 8) 8) ...it's not my truck.

Have you considered linoleum over a insulated subfloor? I know it sounds like a cheap '60 kitchen but they have some really professional looking designs these days that look like tile, wood, RhinoLiner(? )

Rev.Vassago 05-16-2008 03:26 AM

The major issue is that to do a wood floor properly I'd have to pull the dash just to completely remove the pedals, the shifter column, and to get to the tight corners under the dash. That is way beyond what I am doing at this point. The nice thing about what I am doing right now (and I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, lol) is that if I don't like it, I can always undo it or hide it. Even if I decide to put down a completely different floor later, the RhinoLiner will be easily hidden, and will simply provide another layer of sound deadening. The body shop told me about these painted stainless floors they have installed. They have the rubber underlay for insulation and sound deadening. Perhaps some day I will do that as funds allow. The interior is not my major concern right now, and the stuff I'm doing is simply something to kill the time while the truck is being done.

I called the body shop this morning, and the truck is in the paint booth right now. The cream color is going on today, and the black will be sprayed on Monday. Reassembly will be on Tuesday, and the truck should be ready to be picked up on Wednesday. My air line box to run my hoses and cable between the tractor and trailer will be ready later today. I stopped by this morning to see the progress on it, and it looks fantastic. I'll cut the holes for the air lines and power line this weekend, and give it a coat of primer, and a few coats of rattle can satin black.

sidman82 05-16-2008 10:50 AM

Put in some shag carpet. Brady Bunch style. :) Oh, I forgot, you can then get down and do some "shagin" on the floor with the ladies. Excuse me ladies, but I normally don't use that kind of language.

Rev.Vassago 05-16-2008 01:41 PM

LOL

I picked up my metal box that will house my power and air line connections today. The guy did an awesome job on it! Much better than I was expecting. Total cost: $50 (since I used scrap sheet metal from the light bar blanks to make it). The cheapest one 4 State Truck has is $185 plus shipping. Tomorrow, I'll be cutting the holes for the connections, cleaning, priming, and painting it. Dang, I'm tired. This vacation stuff sucks.

You were close. About 30 minutes to Pewaukee, and you would have been there.

Been following this thread... a lot of interesting info... but what has been used for extra insulation on the floor for sound deadining and insulation ???

I wasn't sure where you were, but felt that it was close to the Petro. I dropped a paving roller at the equipment dealer in Franksville.

Okay, sorry about the lack of updates. I drilled the holes for the air lines and power lines today, and began the process of painting the air line box. I've got one coat of primer, and two coats of satin black on it already. Tomorrow, I will put two coats of satin clear on it.

I was expecting my deck plate to show up today, but it didn't. Hopefully tomorrow it will arrive. I sold my Taylor Wing on eBay for $200, and got $233.50 out of my headlights, and an additional $78.00 out of my steps from behind the sleeper (which are going to Australia).

The truck was back in the paint booth today to get the black sprayed. Apparently, there are a few parts they will still be painting tomorrow, but assembly will begin tomorrow, and run into Wednesday. I'll be heading down Wed. morning to survey the damage. I'm really itching to get this thing put back together and get out on the road.

Box looks nice. Track down a polishing place yet? Are you putting cab and sleeper lights on under the doors and bunk or going sleek?

Lights under the cab and sleeper, but they will be completely hidden.

What is the air line box for and what does it replace, the stand up plate that holds the lines? Does it serve a purpose of just to dress it up more?

Originally the truck had a plate and a tree that held the air lines and power line. I removed that a few years ago to put a storage box behind the sleeper, and ran the air lines and power lines through the box and out the side:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f7...ago/box001.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f7...ago/box015.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f7...ago/box016.jpg

I liked the way the box looked on the back of the sleeper, but to be honest it just got filled up with crap I never used.

I considered simply having the lines coming straight up out of the deck plate, but I was concerned about condensation, especially in the electrical connection. Putting them at an angle should reduce the chances of that happening. I'll still use the hanger that I have for the lines, to keep them from chafing against anything.

I sprayed the first coat of clear on the air line box this morning. The second coat will be going on later today. I talked to the body shop this morning, and they are reassembling. The front fenders are already hung, the rear fenders are being hung right now, and the light bar blanks are being painted today. They informed me that I have gone over budget. I'm not happy about the late notice on that, especially since it's too late to undo stuff.

duck 05-20-2008 03:51 AM

If they provided you an estimate and you didn't do any changes to that estimate, I would make them stick to it. Often a shop will go over on an estimate because their people worked slower than expected, or their costs were higher than expected etc but that is NOT the customer's fault.

Knew of a guy, he had been buying chrome and things on the road for a couple of years in anticipation of his first new Pete purchase. Bought the truck and had a shop put on his chrome and lights, they then handed him a bill for $32,000 to put on his own supplied stuff - it was labor to wire the truck! He rightly complained and they immediately cut it in 1/2.

Still - I would tell them that unless they have some sort of signed paperwork authorizing them to go above their provided estimate - you aren't paying the full bill above what YOU agreed to pay, based on their estimate.

They never gave me a full-out estimate, and there were changes made throughout. I'm sure I will be able to get the overage lowered some, if only for the simple fact that I am spending $17,000 there already, and have already informed them that I plan to spend more there in the future when I get my steps done and my tanks painted.

Wow, Just Wow. That looks really sharp and not like a "cookie cutter" Iowa80 catalog truck. Nice work.

I don't think you should leave until you get the tanks, battery boxes and cleaners painted.

geomon 05-21-2008 07:58 AM

Sah-weeet lookin truck!!

Are you changing the chrome front bumper? Perhaps have it powder black coated as well?

hamboner 05-21-2008 09:46 AM

The paint scheme looks good, but I am not very fond of the fenders and headlights. Think it will look a lot better once the tanks and air cleaners are painted.

LOL

I think you should pay for it too.

The air cleaners will be black before I pick up the truck. The tanks and steps will have to wait - I've already blown my budget by a little over $2200. This project is running me about $19,500 right now, with everything I've done outside of the body shop.

The front bumper will be chrome......For now. My first priority is to get a tilt kit for the bumper, to keep the thing from hitting anything, because this baby is gonna ride LOW. I'm going from an 18" Texas bumper to a 22" American Eagle bumper. If I mess the bumper up, that's it - it's back to the 18". At $1000 a pop, I can't afford to keep replacing bumpers.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it is only partially assembled. I agree that the headlights look weird, but I believe it has more to do with the fact that there is no front bumper than anything. I love the slope of the fenders. It gives it the feel of an old truck, which is what I was shooting for.

The headlights are mostly wired. We had to run a second clearance lamp/turn signal on each one, because the marker lights in the headlight can wouldn't function as both unless there was a second one hooked up. So what we are doing is running a turn signal on the inside of the bumper, in front of the tire. It will face the rear of the truck, and will allow cars on the side of me to see the turn signals a bit better (because they are quite small).

The underbody lights are finished on the driver's side, and the passenger side ones will be installed tomorrow. The lower cab skirt is installed on the driver's side.

I got a chance to watch them spray my rear fenders today. They look real good, and I will be able to slam the truck down to them when I drop the air.

One of the guys in the body shop asked me today why I didn't have the bullet lights on top of the cab painted white to match the headlights. DOH! Yet another thing I have to add to the list of things to do.

The rest of the truck will be assembled tomorrow, and I may come to pick it up tomorrow evening, or first thing Friday morning. I'd like to be here to see the rest of it go together, so I may come down tomorrow regardless.

You're too funny.

The more I look at those headlights, the more I wish they wouldn't have centered them on the fenders. I don't know - it might be an optical illusion due to the fact that there is a gaping black hole in the middle where the grill is supposed to be, but they just seem way too far apart. I suppose it wouldn't be a terribly difficult job to have them move them closer together - just unbolt them, fiberglass in the holes they made, respray the fenders black, and drill new holes further in. I guess I'll wait and see, but the more I look at them, the more I think they should have made them off center on the fenders.

Rev.Vassago 05-21-2008 01:34 PM

Wait til they get it all done, then jack 'em up about the cost over run, otherwise they may get a "screw it" attitude and just slam the rest of it together half assed.

It's gonna look nice, no doubt about it. 8)

Rev.Vassago 05-21-2008 02:52 PM

I was watching Convoy this evening, and I happened upon a truck that really reminded me of what mine looks like (particularily the headlights, and how far apart they are): A Diamond T Model 921DFN from the 1950's:

Maybe I ought to put that single horn right in the center of my cab roof too. :P

Noon tomorrow it will be finished. I spent the day working on my shiny new deck plate from 4 State Truck, and putting the finishing touches on my air line box. It now has 4 coats of paint, and 4 coats of clear on it. I still have to cut some notches out of the deck plate, but I will wait until I have the truck so I can measure that exact. 4 State Truck told me that I needed to drill holes through the deck plate to mount it, but I like the idea of having hidden hardware better, so I modified the mounting system slightly so that I don't need to drill through the deck plate.

I'll be heading back down tomorrow morning. From what they said, it's pretty much finished already. They were finishing up the grill when I called, and the bumper, extra lights, and visor were already installed. The air cleaners got wrapped today, and I'm assuming the rest of the graphics go on tomorrow. Many pictures forthcoming. 8)
