tootie04 11-13-2007 02:12 AM

What difference does it make?? I know some black guys who are O/O and they do very well. It is not the color of your skin it is how you run your business.

xcarsalesman 11-13-2007 02:35 AM

i knew i would get this feed back, like i said before, i wasn't trying to start a debate! it was just a simple question. Either yes or no! I know its a touchy subject, that's why i asked the question. Now, i know my on answer to my own question.

brian 11-13-2007 03:53 AM

no one was giving you shit your question was just a bit odd, skin tone does not matter in the trucking industry, people from all walks of life succeed and fail.

I don't know any Americans originally from Africa that are O/O's. But then again, I don't make it a habit of finding out if someone emigrated into this country from Africa, nor do I see why it would matter anyway.

tinman789 11-13-2007 05:16 AM

well...

ok i tried to stay out of it. but...i'm african american and the man is asking a legit question. but everyone is right as well. it is an odd question to a white person. but when i worked for ffe, that says a lot in itself...not a good example, in addition to holding back loads for their personal trucks, the dispatchers would hold loads for white guys. some black as well. but far more white. i asked for a load, was told they had nothing, and before i could leave, the guy was offering a magic load to another driver. i had a trailer and he didn't so i got it after bitching. but it does happen!!!

however, each and every driver is responsible for his/her relation with dispatch. do you refuse a lot of loads, bitch and moan a lot, screw around in truckstops, constantly tun in bad logs? then they have a reason to shank you. black or white.

it's all attitude. you give good service, realize that everyone has a bad day, don;t make promises that you can't keep, then you'll move upi the ladder of seniority and priority. i pitched a fit, a small one, getting loud doesn't do you any good, because the guy lied to me. he could have said maybe, i got a guy who's supposed to get one but..., whatever. but i didn't buy a truck to get jerked around. so i spoke up.

last thing i'll say is don't go making issues where there aren't any that are really bigger than anywhere else. do your job, don't cause a bunch of crap, stay out of other people's business, and you'll do fine. oh be friendly.

speed safely y'all
tinman

According to Da Man, I am Black, Afro American, Non-caucasian. :D My business has not prospered or suffered because of my color. I started running freight with 1 customer shipping railroad ties, 1 customer shipping steel (that went bankrupt). I have built that in less than 10 years to a truck line with 14 trucks that I own and half a dozen leased on. I have a brokerage that calls on over 500 customers. In this business, its SERVICE that counts and as an Afro American, if you cant provide on-time service then you fall into that stereotype that Afro Americans cant be on-time. :D :D

My point is your color may matter to some, but your SERVICE will matter to all. I hope this answers your question and I hope that you are sucessful and want all of the soul brothers (including the blue eyed soul brothers) to be successful.
If you think Da Man is holding you back as an O/O then maybe you should pm me, but if your SERVICE isnt on-time, then dont waste my time. Peace, Love and Hair Grease.

allan5oh 11-13-2007 10:23 AM

There's a stereotype that colored folk can't be on time?

New to me.

I thought it was the "young guys" or "newbies"...

allan5oh 11-13-2007 10:25 AM

I'm a young guy, I'm late maybe 1 time a year that's my fault.

Of course I cannot make up for someone else's lack of planning.

Ditto, except due to said lack of planning by others. I am late most of the time, but dispatch says..."it's ok it can be late there..."

I am also a black man that is fixing to retire from a Steel Mill, and return to trucking!

That was a very good post/reply!

VERY WELL SPOKEN!!!!

It doesn't matter if you are black or white, for the most part you control your own destiny! I have met a whole lot of black people that were down right good hard working Americans and I have met a whole lot that were not worth killing. And on the other hand I have met a whole lot of whites that were down right good people and then there are those that were not worth killings! Good people are just good people! If you are no good you are just no good!

I AM GLAD MY MOTHER AND FATHER TAUGHT ME TO BE PROUD OF WHO I AM AND TO TREAT EACH INDIVIDUAL ACCORDING TO HOW WOULD I WANT TO BE TREATED REGARDLESS OF THEIR RACE, RELIGOUS BRIEFS OR THEIR FINANCIAL STATUS!

I JUST LOVE GOOD PEOPLE!!!!

Now that is my 2 cents?

allan5oh 11-13-2007 11:18 AM

You know it's amazing how successful colored folk don't seem to hold any type of resentment towards "the man".

(Laughing out Loud with you) Colored Folk

sidman82 11-13-2007 12:16 PM

One of the guys I work with, and have become good friends with, is a black O/O and he is doing great. It is because of his persona and attitude. He is a good person, and is a go-getter like me. That is the reason why. Not his skin color.

I gotta say this one surprises me. Not that I care or it matters but you get the image in your mind of people here and I didn't picture that. Hell I still for the life of my can't picture GMAN with a Tennessee accent. I mean did you ever see a superhero with a Southern accent?

I've heard all of these terms coined "offensive", but I've never heard "colored folk" coined offensive.

I think it became offensive when they did away with the "White" and "Colored" fountains/bathrooms etc down here in the states. I certainly don't claim to be any sort of expert on what is offensive or not but I think everyone here knows your reputation and know you meant no offense.

Kranky 11-13-2007 01:18 PM

I've been involved in this type of discussion many times regarding minority or female drivers and my reply has always been "It really doesn't matter what color the person is, or what's between their legs, the important thing is that they can do a good job".

BTW, I'm a caucasian male, not that it should make any difference.

pigrider 11-13-2007 01:48 PM

The word Colored or the Rebel flag sometimes can be seen as offensive depending on the mind set of the person that is offended!

This is getting too deep for me and I am going to have to bail! This subject can get about as touchy as talking religion or politics!

RostyC 11-13-2007 01:56 PM

or talking religion with politicians

I'm offended by the entire thread. I wonder if there's any organization to represent me in a lawsuit.

I know you're thinking "Skin color? What does THAT have to do with mpg?"

To tell you the very truth, this thread was not politically correct. lol So it must be really a good one. I honestly liked the annonaminity(sp?) of this board with just the hard cold trucking facts. So now I will have to like knowing what race people are. Not a problem. But we are leaving cyber space a little.

I'm tempted to start a thread inquiring about the success of the Irish-American O/O and how he/she bodes out there. Of course how they bode when they are not drunk. lol

BigDiesel 11-13-2007 09:10 PM

Where do I begin...... I have a driver/employee who happens to be " Afro American", and he is very good at what he does....

Color of ones skin does not determine their business ability.... ask Tiger Woods...

I know one who pulls a tanker, he seems to be doing well.

Ridge Runner 11-14-2007 01:45 AM

All I can say is WHEW!!!!!!!!!!. I was afraid this one would be locked down after 3 posts. It really does make me feel good that the color of ones skin is not important to the members here, but the quality of the person.

I too have an image of the person posting and many times it doesn't "match" what I thought. ( The poll on age is a very good example ).

As far as Gman's accent..... I spoke with him a couple of years ago and I didn't notice any accent. :P

pepe4158 11-14-2007 09:11 AM

Hmmm I thought Prodigy was a black man, cuz didnt he put a back man on his profile?...hmmm havent heard from him much cuz you all give him grief about how little he ran 4....but then again...he seems to be running at a better rate then me, but thats only cuz you whities wana cheat the latino guy lol(just kidding)

Mandilon 11-15-2007 06:25 AM

RE: ...yup beautifull Hollywood just over the hill

WHO's 'over the hill' pepe?

You or Hollywood?

*LOL

heavyhaulerss 11-15-2007 09:31 AM

im not tryin to cause a debate.... debates are good. i know of several black o/o they do well. i do see a lot of white drivers not speak to them cause the color of their skin. because i speak to them, they tell me i'm not white. lol.
