question for a comparison
Hey Mike, I've been enjoying reading your posts as well as the other responders. I live in the Houston area and have been thinking of becoming a tanker yanker again, I used to pull plastic resin for A&R. I would have to start as a company driver and am looking at Enterprise, Dana, and Superior. In your opinion, which would be the best to start out with? I have 20 yrs driving experience, a little over 1 year of that was the aforementioned tanker. I do have my X endorsement. Congrats on your success! Thanks ahead of time for your response.

I can't give too much info on the company driver side of things as I never was a company driver doing tanks, but guys at Dana/Suttles seem to like it and I talked to a couple of them and they say you can do 50-60k,I have been more than impressed with the post from some of the guys on here who work for Superior,I don't think you could go wrong there and I would love for one of our guys to have a thread on the company side to compare the 2.

KB, out of the companies you listed, for the Houston area Enterprise and Superior are going to be your best bet, for steady work. You would also do ok with Service Transport, on Almeda Genoa Rd. Enterprise has the most terminals in the Houston area with 3, Freeport, Laporte and Baytown. Dana has a handful of company trucks at the Laporte terminal, but the guy's driving those trucks are going to tell you, that they don't plan on giving up their seat anytime soon. There are some O/O fleets based at LaPorte, and those guy's pay their driver's between 21% and 26.5%, depending on the particular Owner.

I'm leased into Miller Transporters, here in Beaumont, and I'm not doing anywhere near as good as Mike is doing at Dana. The choices we make.

Check out the "tanker info for y'all" thread by Cyanide on the "what about this company" page here on CAD , I think you will find VERY useful info on there.

Sad thing about that is that Miller IS getting the same rates as the rest of them, just NOT passing it on to you, they are too busy lining their own pockets with what rightfully yours.

How much trouble is St Gabriel La for you?

thanks
Thanks for the info guys, I'll check into the companies listed aroundhere and see what I can find out. I'm guessing none of them have a lease program, which may be a good thing considering how most lease programs are a ripoff. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and be safe out there.

Mike how much does your truck weigh? I have found a western star that is a very good deal but its heavy. I have looked everywhere and cannot find the tare weight of an empty 407 so I thought knowing your weight would help me until I can wiegh one of our empties.

I am trying to stay around 34k with a load of fuel for obvious reasons. Maniac I have read in the past that you cannot scale 45,000 net. How does the company handle that? Are you doing the containers or do you just load 43k or so and go on? If you can't load a full 45k does the rate get cut?

That western star is a one owner truck. Owned by a non-smoker (important to me) with very low miles. I would hate to have to pass on it because it weighs too much. What do you guys weigh bobtail and how do you deal if you're tare is over 35k?

My truck weighs about 20k with 1/2 tanks, most times I am around 34k tare, but with some of our trailers I am 33k or under,if I live load I am usuually fine the customer cannot send you out overloaded, but if I pick up preloaded trailers they are mostly loaded to around 45k then I have a real hard time scaling the axles,I am usually under gross and have not been hassled about axle weights yet....

I wish I had a lighter truck, but I am not gonna get something differnent anytime soon 8) .

Yes the customers sometimes bitch a little about not being able to haul 45k,but they soon get over it and the rate is not cut.

My problem with Miller isn't the rate at all. It's the lack of work, and all the DHing. Except for the last couple weeks, when I was bingo-ing back and forth between Houston and St Louis, where my dh was cut to less than 35 miles per load, I have been averaging 43% dh miles...which drives me bonkers.
I could live with 250 to 400 miles of dh on a 3000 mile week. But when the dh is 1200 miles or more on the same 3000...@#%&*@#!!!! Their rates just don't compensate for that.

I don't have any problems in any of the plants at St. Gab. Went into most of them, when I was a Sentinel company driver.
