Charcoal Grill on Board

I'm sure this topic has come up before but here goes....

anyone have a grill on the truck?? company say anything about having charcoal and lighter fluid in the truck?

Plenty of places do say things about lighting a fire on their property. And have you given any thought as to what you are going to do with the ashes and left over coals when you are done?

I would think a little propane unit would work nice. They have some compact units at Camping World like this;
Fold N Go 2-Burner Stove - Item - Camping World

You would still have an issue with the open flame, but it is small enough to stow away and would just need a small bottle of propane.

Uturn2001 05-29-2009 09:28 AM

You can go to Wally World and buy a small gas grill that take those 1lb propane bottles for $20 or so.

Scottt 05-29-2009 09:32 AM

I use mine everyday. I just pull into a rest area and put it on a picnic table. Use "Match Light" charcoal and it is ready to cook on in 5 minutes. My grill is very small and 4-5 pieces of charcoal is all I need to cook a couple hamburgers or a steak. I will put ribs in the crock pot in the morning and let them cook all day then put them on the grill when I stop at night.

A little douse of water and the fire is out.

I have a propane burner also I can heat things up on. I usually use it for omelettes. Mix eggs and whatever you want in them in a freezer bag, When you are ready for breakfast take one out of the cooler and put in a pan of boiling water......Instant omelette!!! I usually make a few up when I am home and put them in the fridge. I also have a rack you can put bread on and make toast on the burner.

I also use my 12 volt toaster oven alot for dinner. Makes good toasted ham and cheese and philly cheese steak sandwichs.

I hardly ever eat fast food or over priced truck stop crap.

I've never used this inside of my truck, but this is one of the better ones. Home Page | Jetboil

that match light charcoal is good, however i'm a pyro....i like alot of flame. =) but the gas grill is a good idea. no charcoal mess. However i would think i'd solve that problem with the ashes by getting a kitty litter bucket, and pouring them out in there, then discard the bucket when i was done. i dunno. i like the taste of charcoal, but might opt for the gas for the convience.

VitoCorleone99 05-29-2009 10:50 PM

Wal Mart has a "table top unit" that may or may not be designed for multiple uses, but at $6 it's a single-use kinda deal for me. It comes with the grill and the charcoal. You can set it up, hit it with a match, cook your food, let the coals cool down, and then toss it. The unit is sealed in plastic wrap at the point of purchase, so you could ostensibly carry one or two with you at any given time.

My fantastic Memorial Day cheeseburgers convinced me that the $6 was well spent.

Kevin0915 05-31-2009 10:03 AM

Well i went into Wal-Mart to buy a couple gallons of windshield wiper fluid, and ended up dropping $160.

Broke down and bought a Coleman Perfectflow camp grill. little propane bottle, etc. Also bought a small cooler and ice to keep meats...cause so far the coolers i've had in my truck dont keep things cool enough, and meat spoils after a few days if i dont use it right away.

anyway, the grill was $66 or something.

Now my question is, about the only place i could put the thing while at a truck stop would be on my catwalk. Then thought that might not be a great idea to cook with an open flame next to two 125gal desiel tanks. =) So i bought a couple small step stools to put the grill on when i am actually going to use it.

As far as cooking on the catwalk, dumb idea....or are there drivers out there who do it, and never have run into a problem??

Rev.Vassago 05-31-2009 10:41 AM

I've put my gas grill on the catwalk before without problem.

GMAN 05-31-2009 12:17 PM

For those of you who prefer real charcoal you can get some aluminum foil and put underneath the charcoal before you light it. Let the fire burn down the charcoal and then pour some water on them to extinguish any hot coals. Once you make sure all the hot coals are out you fold up the aluminum foil and throw in a trash can. Just make sure the fire is completely out. It also gets rid of the ash residue mess.

BobBski 05-31-2009 12:59 PM

I buy disposable grills...ie pre-packaged aluminum tray with charcoal and grill on it...sealed in plastic. All self contained...don't grill too often but keep one in the truck for times that come up. Throw away when done...buy a new one next time at Walmart.

Yeah... that stuff is getting real expensive!

What... no refrigerator? I know they're pricey, but you can always go to RentaCenter and get a "dorm fridge" for about the price of all the ice you're buying.

However, if you go with coolers and ice.... I HEARD that Dick's Sporting Goods has a cooler made of space age stuff that will keep a bag of ice frozen for FIVE whole days! Don't know if it's true.... but, that would pay for itself in a month or so. I think it was on sale for $40-50.

Yeah, but I think his CATWALK was the only part that survived the ordeal. Might as well use it for SOMETHING! :lol2:

Something popped into my mind about this subject.....

Somewhere along the line.... I remember a discussion about this.... but what the gist of it was this....: Propane can be considered another "fuel", and since it is heavier than air, it is not safe to leave enclosed in a tractor.....however...butane is not considered a "fuel" in the same way, and it is lighter than air so it will dissipate...

I know that most of the guys that I have known that carried grills with them...either carried charcoal....or used the pre-madeup grills that were disposable.

If you are carrying propane or butane....do be very careful with it....if there is a leakage of either, and its ignited....the boom and fire will be impressive.....to anyone seeing it.:hellno:

Sorry, Skywalker but butane is heavier than propane see: Propane & Butane - Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LP Gas) components and Propane or Butane, which to use?

Both are fuels (Liquefied Petroleum Gas).

matcat 06-02-2009 11:22 PM

Pfft, I keep butane in my truck as well as a Naptha based product (Both are used to refuel lighters, one for butane lighters, and the other for zippo). Although quite interestingly after examining my sidebox the otherday I did find a small propane bottle in there, not quite sure why.

FunkRider 06-03-2009 01:48 AM

Expensive (but very nice) option...

I think I'd rather put out a payment for one of those giant sleepers though.

While I was aware that both are "LPG's"..... I really wasn't aware of all the properties of butane.... what I said before was told to me by one of the drivers at CFI.... he had been Level One'd when he had flammable placards on....and the DOT man spotted his "butane" cylinder...and said he was OK with that, but would not be OK with "propane"..... Seems that given the nature of butane....as long as the temperature is above freezing...it is as dangerous as propane... Now I know why...back when I smoked, that butane lighters didn't work worth a squat when the temperature was below freezing.....

I know that on my boat....since my propane locker is on the flybridge...I have to routinely check the hose from the regulator down to the galley to make sure there are no abrasions and the hose is secure...about 30' of it. Last thing I need is to have a leak into the bilge and crank an engine.....:eek1:

I learned something today....:smokin:

Why when you fill a butane lighter you have to wait 5 min to use it, because it is too cold to use.

Believe it or not.... I never had much luck refilling them.....I used the disposables.....but I preferred my trusty old zippo.... still have the engraved one I got in Vietnam and carried that whole time.... quit smoking 30 years ago....but still have my zippo!

Butane lighters are like an art, everytime you fill then you must adjust them, because the pressure is going to be different every time you fill one. I use a butane lighter to light my smokes while driving (because they are wind proof), and my zippo when not moving or outside. Of course I have disposables too, as backups.

VPIDarkAngel 06-04-2009 11:22 AM

If applicable, check your company's policies. I'm about 99% sure that Werner doesn't allow propane bottles aboard the tractors. I've not looked into charcoal and lighter fluid, though.
