TV Reception in the Truck

How do you get TV reception in the truck? Satellite? Antenna?

I have Dish Network at home. Do Dish Network and DirecTV have any kind of a setup for truck drivers?

got mud? 09-10-2008 09:34 PM

you could use an antenna until feb of 2009 after that you will not be able to. I seen lots of guys that have dish network hooked up in their trucks. they just set it up and take down every time they park.

wsyrob 09-10-2008 09:49 PM

You will still be able to use an antenna after feb 2009. Just need a converter or a digital TV. I use my laptop with a $50.00 usb tv tuner that I hook to an antenna mounted on the mirror. I got over 30 channels about 10 of which were High Def in N Chicago the other night.

Rev.Vassago 09-10-2008 09:55 PM

TV sucks. Just buy tons of movies.

Malaki86 09-10-2008 11:36 PM

I haven't had a tv or tv tuner in my truck in years. I just use my laptop in the truck and a portable usb drive that I load up on movies and tv shows that I download on my home pc.

Drew10 09-11-2008 01:42 AM

I have typical antenna TV. I use an external "V" antenna mounted on my right mirror.
Obviously how many channels and the quality of the channels received depends on your proximity to a city that broadcasts air TV.
It is very helpful if you TV or the tuner that is used is capably of self scanning for the local TV channels.

I do the same thing. I have to have live sports though. Its not the same when you know the outcome.

Uturn2001 09-11-2008 01:38 PM

If you are going to be using a TV to receive over the air broadcasts or even think you might once in a while do yourself a favor and go and apply for the government coupon for a converter box and then get one before the Feb 2009 switch over to all digital signals.

flood 09-11-2008 04:28 PM

most tv's and vcr's made in the last three years are digital ready. but you will need to check to see if yours is if not you will need the converter box,

we have dish network in the truck it will cost you an extra $5 per month.
it cost us a $12 per month because if what we have (dish DVR for 2 tv's)

tweety bird 09-11-2008 05:06 PM

A lot of guys have satellite in the truck and if you have Dish at home, you should be able to add the line for very little extra- like flood says.

If you have satellite, you don't need the converter. That's only for regular antenna signals, not satellite or cable.

Check out SlingBox if you have a home tv connection and a laptop.

BigDiesel 09-12-2008 01:48 AM

I have VuQube now and its only 5 bucks for the extra receiver.

Big are you doing dish or directv?

bigpapa7272 09-13-2008 08:05 PM

vu qube works with both, as i understand

flood 09-13-2008 08:26 PM

only three things i don't like about vuqube is
1st is the $700 ($629 if you find it now sale) just for the dish.
2nd is the lag time when you channel surf going from one sat to the other like the old C-BAND 10' dish
3rd will not work with my dvr setup (it can't record) from both sat's at the sametime, like my dish can.

bigpapa7272 09-13-2008 08:36 PM

so ur saying you would be better getting a direct tv dish on a tripod?

flood 09-13-2008 09:09 PM

check this out http://www.classadrivers.com/phpBB2/...478&highlight= our setup in on page 2-3.

vuqube is find it just will not work with the dvr that i have and if you don't mind the lag time 20-60 secs and i myself i can think of other things i can use the money for.

Malaki86 09-14-2008 01:53 AM

I bought a new computer for the truck last week (it'll be here on Monday). So, since I went to a regular computer, I needed to get a new monitor as well (I used a 17" display on the laptop before). So, I just got a 22" widescreen LCD. All I can say is "OMG!!!"

At 1440x900 resolution, I can sit 6 feet away from the monitor and read the web page.

Can't wait to put it in the truck.

ORPLINER 09-14-2008 02:30 AM

after the first 2 answer to this question-i'm confused. I drive a FL Columbia with a standard(i guess) pole antenna for the Tv.I have a 15" LCD tv-will I need a different type antenna to pick up the digital broad-cast signal or a converter box-i know the tv is digital.Appreciate any info

Malaki86 09-14-2008 02:51 AM

A standard antenna will pick up the digital signal. If the tv does not have a digital tuner, you'll need a converter box or a new tv.

I use a sling box...no need to set up the dish.

flood 09-14-2008 04:47 PM

sling box is nice but it can't do what my dish setup can. son at home watching one show and me recording 2 movies at the same time..

i can watch movies that we record on the dvr when she is driving, i DON"T need to get on the internet to use the dish and we all know that you can't always get a good fast internet connection (sling box requiers)

it takes less than 5min to setup the dish and 2min to take it down.

Malaki86 09-14-2008 05:15 PM

Not to mention the fact that both Sprint and Verizon have a 5gig monthly limit now.

Mystikal 11-29-2008 02:31 AM

little late on this post, but are there any good non-permenant mounts for the vuqube? the wife and I will be out in our own company truck and we plan to get the tracking qube that you can watch when your moving... but don't want to attempt drilling holes into a company truck.

rkeck 11-29-2008 02:04 PM

Go to Wal-mart and get one of the RCA flat-panel antennas. They do a pretty decent job and can be placed practically anywhere and out ot the way. They are not perfect, but always easily beat rabbit ear antennas for reception. The one I got a year ago has no amplifier and works fine in most reasonable locations.

They work well for digital and anaolg broadcasts. And when all else fails, read a book. I've not had any luck with the USB/laptop tv devices and have tried a few. I went to Radio shack and spent $120 for a small 7inch wide-screen analog/digital tv that I can put right next to me in the sleeper or up front in the seat, or wherever. Has a great display once you get locked onto a good digital signal. If I want to watch a movie, then I use the laptop dvd.

I guess your setup depends on how much of a TV watcher you are

Criss 07-31-2009 04:26 AM

I use a software for this

Not for long time I use a software and I dont need anything than a laptop and internet connection. It's 49.95 and you have 4,000 satellite TV channels on your laptop.
TV Satellite from your PC
you don't need antenna or other wires. I use a sprint connection.

Yes. We make two non-permanent mounts for VuQube. One uses 3M aircraft tape to install it on the back of the rig. It would be in the same place as where the "drill" mount would go. It can be taken off by reversing the procedure to put it on (heat activated.)

The second mounts to either side mirror bracket but of course you would have to be parked in such a manner that whichever side you put it on that night had a view of the southern sky.

Either way, no drilling.

BobBski 08-02-2009 09:04 PM

Hopefully I don't have much time to watch tv..but when I do, i'm in the USB for laptop with $25 antenna group. As a Verizon customer I also have unlimited TV on my cell...great for news while sitting at a customer. :) DVD's are great on the laptop too.

NOTE: for cell phone tv to work need to be near a larger city most of the time. In those instances have V Cast Videos...not bad...helps pass the time. All else fails...turn on the laptop and come here:lol:

Any of you guys ever check out Hulu - Watch your favorites. Anytime. For free. You would need the aircard though. TV and movies for your watching pleasure.

Hulu - Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: Thu, Jul 30, 2009 - Watch the full episode now.

Malaki86 08-03-2009 02:01 AM

Not to mention that watching streaming video will: a) require a fast connection & b) eat up a 5gig a month limit FAST

this is where sprint's UNLIMITED ACCESS for $59.99 comes in handy.

Malaki86 08-03-2009 02:48 AM

And which provider has UNLIMITED? It's not Sprint, Verizon or AT & T.
