Method of transportation for getting home on weekends
 

Does a company driver leave the truck at the terminal and drive home in their personal vehicle when traveling home on the weekends?

The reason I ask is because I currently share a vehicle and would need to get a cheap used vehicle if that is the case for getting home on available weekends.

I would imagine an owner operator would just drive home in his truck, but I am not certain how it works for a company driver who is driving the companies truck...

some make to leave it at the terminal, some will let you take it home BUT charge you milage to do so and some want you to taking it home. each company has their way of doing it you will just have to talk to then about it.

It is one of the questions we had for all the companies we were looking at. look at this way if you leave the truck at the terminal you will have to clean out everything you don't want stolen. If you have paid to take the truck home is worth it...? the company we work for expects us to take the truck home bobtail.

Swift has a terminal in Jonestown just outside of Harrisburg :), Swift lets you take the truck home or leave it at a terminal, only stipulation with taking it home is it may only be parked there for a max of 3 days.

Also keep in mind, if you are under a load, companies will not let you take the truck home, unless you have a safe and secure spot to park it. You are responsible for what's on that trailer. Wouldn't be wise to just leave a loaded truck somewhere on the side of the street. See if you have a place near you that is fenced, where you can park a truck. There's one near my hometown where there are a few trucks and RV's. These places charge you a fee, and I think it's monthly.

Now why would you do that? Read this forum and you'll see most people run away from Swift and they don't have a good name in the industry. That being said: most companies will allow you to take the truck 'home', but you cannot always park it in front of your house as that depends on where you live, city regulations etc. We park our truck at a truckstop 6 miles away from where we live as we cannot park it anywhere closer or they'll tow it (which has happened, cost $450 out of our pocket to get it back). We cannot leave our personal car at this T/S so we get a cab back and forth when we come home and go back out again.

I've driven for USXpress and Celadon. Both companies let us bring the rigs home, loaded or not. Hell, USX has bobtailed me from Medway to Fairmont WV for my hometime and even paid me the miles on it. When I quit Celadon I was at home for my Christmas break. They ran me empty to Indy and paid the miles (empty) for it, plus paid for the car rental to return home.

If I was loaded during my hometime I just put a heavy duty lock on the trailer and parked it at the truckstop about 15 miles away. I just had to send a Qualcomm message when I parked it so they had an exact lock on where the truck was and when I was scheduled to go back out so they could tell if the truck moved too early, which would indicate a theft.

Another option is to look into RV and boat storage. Sometimes you can work a prorated plan with the owner and only pay for the days you're home. I would never feel comfortable leaving my truck at a truck stop for days unattended. That's asking for trouble.
