Not sure about the school I am in...

There are no working bathrooms.

We stand in the freezing cold all day and sometimes do nothing.

No working heaters.

The instructor has cussed and screamed at us for not moving to the front of the class fast enough.

The recruiter has hung up on several of us when we have complained or asked questions.

They didn't dismiss class during an ice storm until it reached it's peak. They didn't offer me a hotel room and told me I couldn't stay at the school. My classmates had to help me out. We were dismissed at 11 and I got home at 7:30 that night. Saw several accidents on the road going home. I live a half and hour away, it took me an hour and forty five minutes to get there.

They told us to come to school today, the roads were frozen again and snow was coming down on top of it. When I told our director that the conditions were bad where I was he exclaimed that he drove to school for 2 hours at 60mph in this. He is getting paid for this, I am not.

I am just discouraged right now. Anybody else have these experiences too?
I don't want to quit, I am pissed at how unprofessional they are.
Wanted to vent.

What school is it? It's okay to answer -- they don't know who you are. :)

Great sig line!

I think you can answer your own question. Think about this: Would you treat someone paying you to go to your school like they are treating you?

Report to the BBB, your states regulatory body for schools.

R U N don't walk.

What state are you in, there's bound to be a better school near you. I've started to add driving schools to my carrierinfo spreadsheet.

It's C-1 (Driver Solutions) in St Louis, MO

It's close to where I live and my friend went to it a couple of years ago. I found out that they have a high turnover rate with the instructors. This is a new director too. I talked to some of my classmates who went today and they said that they didn't do roll call and they were making them take tests they already took.

Also, I didn't mention this but, I got real sick my second week of school. M doc said it was because I was already sick and they had me out in the cold all day. He said if I would not have come home and went to him. I would have had pneumonia or something.

I will make some calls like you guys said. The first week the basement where the bathrooms were, were covered in toilet water too (if you know what I mean). That's why they won't let us use the bathroom because they won't pay for a plumber to fix the problems. They gave two of the students 50 bucks a piece to clean it up.

And honestly, I don't know what to do. I will owe the school money if I quit or get kicked out. I can't owe more money than I do now. I am trying to put my big girl panties and deal with it, one leg at a time. This just doesn't seem normal or ethical to me.

I should have run the first day but, we were in class and I assumed that they would have the bathroom and heating problems fixed. They had a trailer set-up with a toxic burner thing heating us  , it ran out of fuel. They have no wood for the burn barrels. This place is a mess.

thanks for letting me vent guys, I have had enough and I didn't want to seem like I was weak or something. This is what I want to do and I am disappointed in myself for not checking this place out more thoroughly.

I swear this is not me avoiding my pre-trip test either.

I know the East St Louis Community College :nervous: USED to offer truck driver classes. Not to sound mean Evil, but let this be a lesson to those thinking about attending cdl school in st louis. It might be better to jump the river and go to school.

I think this is very wise and not mean at all. You know?

From the web site they look to be part of a CDL mill with schools across the country from their site

GREAT TRUCKING CAREERS BEGIN WITH DRIVER SOLUTIONS
THE INDUSTRY LEADER IN
TRUCK DRIVER TRAINING.
School facilities and equipment.

The truck driving schools feature state-of-the-art facilities all developed to help make your training as easy as possible. Some of these features may include multimedia learning tools, a computerized driving simulator that'll give you a feel for the "big rig", well-designed student training materials and a large paved training ground.

Good Luck hope you can get out with out getting dinged on the $$$ side

I remember finding out there was no driving simulator. I figured it would be okay since I have never been good at video games anyway.

Frankly Evylnn...I wouldn't have put up with the crap that you have described, back when I learned how to drive a truck.

Well.....I guess I shouldn't say that..I learned to drive truck back home in Montana, while working on a ranch. It was friggin cold during the winter..there weren't any heaters to run to..except in a pickup or truck...but I didn't pay to learn...the boss taught me, and paid me a fair day's wage for learning.

Ummmmmm.....in 1973 a fair days wage for a 13 year old ranchhand in Montana was $16.00 a day and board (meals). I ate a lot of steak at lunch a dinner!!!

What you need to do is please yourself. If you feel you can tough it..so be it. me...I think the city or county board of health should know about the classroom and rest-facility situation. They better be damn cheap, price wise, for the facilities they provide.

Drew10 02-23-2008 12:36 AM

You should get you money back and leave, like another said report to the BBB. This has nothing to do with male/female, sticking it out, big girl panties, etc. No excuse for the occurrances you listed.

I'm going to suggest something just a wee bit different.

Since I'm not sure just who BBB is, I'm going to suggest that you find a camera, take some pictures, and take them to the LABOR RELATIONS BOARD. Seems to me, there are laws about working conditions. When you're going to school, you're not having a party. It's work. That would mean that the toilets are required to work. The heaters are required to work. And, I believe you may also be able to get the instructors on foul language. You may find that you can get your contract cancelled, money refunded, and be able to go to a technical college were the conditions are much more humane and the instruction is of much higher quality. I know that the technical colleges I'm familiar with have reasonable conditions and some of the best instruction in the state.

I find it amazing that we can put human beings into conditions like that without a problem, but if you put a dog into conditions like that, you're going to jail. Aren't human beings supposed to have far higher than dogs? Okay, I can't run as fast and I can't sit down, lift my leg and lick my........

Wind...The BBB is more commonly known as the Better Business Bureau. Enough reports to the BBB about the operation's of that school, and the state will step in.

As for the conditions at the school..restrooms and heat/ac...that is what you go to the county or city health board about. The health board can close the school or force them to correct the abnormal conditions. Because the school is a business which has more than 3 people at it daily, they are required to have functionable restroom and heat.

I agree... just do it with a "digital camera". Store the pictures on a CD, make sure they identify the place, the school, and all. Pictures of the instructors...especially the foul mouthed ones.... Don't ask them to pose, just get snaps.

File complaints with BBB, the Health Department, MO Dept of Education, and talk to a lawyer. He may be able to write a one paragraph letter that will get you off the hook there in a heartbeat. PAM bites anyway.

I'm not "PC"....but much of what you have described falls under "sexual harassment" and "hostile workplace" rules.... you could have a "field day" if you went about it right.

I'm afraid that on one level.....and I am NOT trying to insult you here.... by staying and toughing it out....and not making waves or fighting back, you are sinking to their level and possibly lower...because you are subjugating yourself to their stupidity and underhandedness willingly.

But if you decide you've had enough....take action to CYA.

It is, but all you can do with them generally is post a complaint. And if the school is not a member....its a pointless action. The State of Missouri and its agencies are the ones to correct the issues, especially where "sanitation" and "classroom conditions" are concerned.

This is so true. I guess I was hoping things would get better, I am also desperate to make some money. I should never make decisions based on desperation. I sent a copy of my complaints to my lawyer AND one to the recruiter. I know someone here suggested I bring a digital camera but, I don't have one. I don't even have the money to buy one of those disposable ones. Like I said, I was/am desperate.

I really cannot afford anymore debt at this point. I am going to owe no matter what. I also don't want to step foot in that place again either. I couldn't sleep tonight because I made myself sick with worry about all of this.

I have read every suggestion here and I a weighing all of my options. I knew coming here would bring me a wealth of information and support. I just wish I would have spoken up sooner.

You should sticky this topic for other people looking for schools. I hope my mistake helps other people not do what I did.

I have my permit, they can't take that away from me. Not sure what to do from here.

I'm a she and this is also why I have been trying to stick it out. Trying to prove something I guess.

Damn, that sounds a lot better than what I am doing.

It's 6k, paid back through your paycheck when a carrier (PAM in my case) pics you up. You have a contract to drive with them for a year.

$6000 for school and you have to go to PAM? Wow, talk about adding insult to injury. Where'd they send you? C1 I assume?

Yep, C-1. I know PAM isn't where I was going to end up after my year. I have always been told that it is a starter company, you pay your dues with them. My friend had a totally different experience than I did. He's been giving me crap about possibly quitting. I would love to see him do it. I am so behind on my bills now that I am afraid I won't be able to go to another school. Guess I have to get a regular job until I can save up and take off work to go to school again.

Well..since you're in MO what about finishing your training with Prime Inc. out of Springfield? Just don't lease a truck that's all I'm saying as that's a money drain for sure, but to get training they're pretty good.
Also they pay you during training period, granted it's not going to make you rich by any means. Then they'll take out money every week out of your pay check but I believe that's after you're done. I can't quite remember the details, so maybe you can call a recruiter there and ask about it. I would not finish that 'school' you're in, because also in 2005 or 2006 there was this big thing going on in MO with schools easily passing students etc. and a lot of drivers who had passed their CDLs had their CDls revoked after that and had to retake it. And then I would still go to BBB and maybe call OOIDA for advice (OOIDA is also located in MO and if you do a search on the net you will easily find them). And no, you don't have to be an Owner/Operator to contact them, they might require you to become a member but maybe they give you advice for free; also not sure about that, sorry.
I hope you get your CDL soon in a good way, don't bang yourself over the head too hard because you're really not the only one unfortunately. Good luck to you!!!

What am i missing, here?

It sounds to me like world class training in a real life environment. You, better than most, are being prepared for filthy truck stops, rude drivers and arrogant supervisors.

Congratulations! You've got it made!

 that made my day!!

I went to school today, had a lot of time in the yard. I didn't want to stay home and sulk. I needed to at least learn something. I feel better when I am productive I guess. They cleaned the porta potties, had the heating apparatus working and had wood for the barrels. They were also pumping sewage or something out of the basement. I found that interesting.

I still suck at the maneuvering aspect, then again, this is my 3rd week and this is the 3rd time I have driven the truck. Never driven a stick before. I got good for about an hour and then, my brain froze, I forgot which way to steer when the trailer started to drift, I even forgot what drifting was by the end of the day. That is what fatigue, cold, and severe stress will do to you.

Hmmmm, maybe somebody called or sent them an email and suggested they check out this thread? Novel concept.... If this was the case, they had to do something "corrective", no?

Patience Ms. Grasshopper.....Rome was not built in a day, nor do aspiring drivers master the beast in a couple of hours. It will come to you with practice. Don't try so hard or be so demanding of yourself that you literally cause yourself to make mistakes. It ain't nothin' but a thing!!

Good for you dont quit, finish and move on. Then maybe try a thong, a lot less to wash while on the road.
