Testing for my CDL tomorrow!

Instructor says I should have no problem at all. But I am nervous as hell, I hope I overcome it before I test.

The big thing is to carefully listen to the examiner and give him what he is asking for/telling you to do. If you do not understand be sure to ask for clarification.

I have seen more than one driver fail because they did not listen to the instructions given or because they did not understand and did not want to look like an idiot by asking for clarification.

Cool beans. Do your best, and everything should work great. Best of Luck.

ncnewbie 09-10-2007 10:31 AM

Best of luck!

ben45750 09-10-2007 10:35 AM

Good luck!

Just do what you know how to do.

Make sure you know the airbrake test, and how to explain what your doing also.

And dont forget to test your air horn and city horn during the inside pretrip.

Good luck. As long as you can keep it between the lines, know all your pretrip, and can back it in the hole, you'll be fine.

yoopr 09-10-2007 11:10 AM

Good Luck-you'll be fine

Fozzy 09-10-2007 11:15 AM

You already know how to drive the truck, you've been trained and the do's and dont's. Treat this as just another training day! Save all the coffee and mountain dew or those toilet water energy drinks for AFTER the test! Just go out and drive the truck.. Now this is important!!!!

DO NOT drag a simple screw up throughout the test course! If you screw something up.. LEAVE IT THERE!!! There is a good chance that the thing you goof up is in a "non graded" area or task. While there are several rights and lefts during the test, for the most part, you are graded on only four of each! If you screw up, acknowledge it and move on!

Move your head and not just your eyes!

Mention everything! -Descriptive driving will always make you score higher!

Watch your speed! Speeding on the CDL test is an instant fail!

Just remember to BREATHE and it will be over before you know it,,,

Come back tomorrow and gloat and accept the congrats!!!

Good Luck, relax it will be over before you know it.

Be sure to let everyone know how it went.

the main thing is, WATCH YOU CRITICALS!

as long as you can control the truck safely, without running over curbs, running red lights, stalling the truck (remember your splitter) driving too slow or too fast, disobeying traffic signs, and slamming on the brakes to hard.
you'll be fine. your not expected to be a super trucker on test day.
good luck. see you on the road

Definatly watch those curbs! I know in this state if you run over a cub during a turn it's an instant fail. Keep an eye on the trailer when you're making your turns! And like the others said, ask for clarification if you don't understand something, or if you are in an unusual situation that might require some improvision.

Jimbpard 09-11-2007 07:08 AM

So how'd it go?

NHHunter 09-11-2007 11:15 AM

Well, I blew it. I got my pretrip done w/o a problem and next was the cones. I have done what they asked me to do 100 times in the schools range with no problem. I shouldve aced the cones but my nerves got the best of me, they choked me to the point that I honestly was better my 1st day ever on the range then I was today. I looked pathetic out there. I am pretty disappointed in myself right now

Jimbpard 09-11-2007 01:09 PM

Well you got that out of your system, now you'll be good to go for next time...

Dont worry too much, just have confidence that you CAN do it next time.

I got shot down on my first try because I didnt know a damn thing about the air brake test....It's a bummer, but it'llmake you better for next time.

dbkevindb 09-11-2007 01:14 PM

well if i did it, you can do it too, im just 20 lol. but yeah good job done with pre-trip at least now you only have to focus on the cones, you should be good.

all18wheels 09-11-2007 01:17 PM

i just barely scraped by on my skills and failed the first time on the road.
it was a real pride buster for me.
but, i just picked myself up and passed on the retest ( 30 dollar fee :? )

if at first you dont succeed. try, try again. BOL

EDIT: i forgot. on the road test, dont look at the instructor or worry about his clipboard or what he writes. and dont think you failed because you think you did something critical.
just drive , do your best, pay attention and worry about whether or not you passed when the test is over.

Deus 09-11-2007 01:45 PM

We all got nervous, best just to think about the examiner as one of your instructors and you're just going for a ride.

ben45750 09-11-2007 02:14 PM

Well his tomorrow is today. Wonder if he's going to come back and tell us how it went?
