Weigh Stations

So whats the word on the weigh stations??? I've always been local, but today I too my first trip from Toledo, OH to Indianapolis, IN for my new employer and I passd 2 of them..... PASSED, hahaha! Because I was unsure if I was supposed to enter???

inmate1577 08-27-2007 01:08 PM

Unless you have an EZ Pass transponder that lets you pass an open station, then you have to stop. Of course only if its open.
You should read the signs about 1 mi ahead that tell you if its open or closed.
Hahahahah will turn to boohoohoo if you get caught passing an open station

Ez Pass won't do squat for you at a weigh station. That device is only for paying tolls. PrePass will let you bypass scales if you get a green light.

unkut2003 08-27-2007 01:33 PM

Well I know I passed it and it was open so??? What do you do once you pull in??? Whats the process.....

Some of the older scales in NM don't have an Open or Closed sign. They flip the sign backward when closed and upright when Open.

You're one of two things....totally clueless or a troll. I'm guessing the latter. If however you're just clueless, I would suggest you ask your boss to send you out with a trainer before you end up in jail.

True, but you have a good distance of warning before the station itself.
Whether the sign is manual or automatic.

It's pretty much a given that all the major NM Weigh stations (on major highways entering the state) will be open 24/7.

Roadie 08-28-2007 02:31 AM

I have been studying the CDL book in prep to go to driving school soon. PLEASE tell me there aren't drivers out there with a current CDL that are as clueless as this guy!? Whats a weigh station, and no logbook??? I might have to rethink this career choice!
Cheers

It sure sounds like it. How can you get a CDL without knowing the basic laws that drivers have to follow? I think this example answers the questions: Is there really a driver shortage? and Why do they want to let Mexican drivers in the United States.

Haha crackjack boxes, I remember those things. Look mom I won a free CDL? uh what's that? and what's a weigh station. haha. Log book? who needs that anyway.

Yeah have to wonder with some people, but I liked how you put that..Priceless! 8)

Aligator 08-28-2007 04:27 AM

I had a class B long before I had a class A. And it was only by accident that I learned that I, too, must pass through all scales and inspection stations.
I was driving a 3/4 ton pickup and a trailer that was obviously for commercial use.

In some areas that watch for farmers and others who do not know to stop - or at least pass through.

No. Purely fabricated by the trucking industry. If there was really a shortage, wages and benefits would be much better.

So companies that have Mexican subsidiaries, like Schneider and CFI, can use Mexican drivers who are driving for .10 cpm. When the lobbying arm of the trucking industry, the ATA, is pushing hard for this, you know it's NOT in any American's best interests.

I wonder what Fred Thompson would say about Mexican truckers. Any ideas? Voted Republican almost all my life and I won't vote for the Dems. Might go fishin!

I'm not sure how to take this guy but if he was trained locally its possible. My cousin started on a dock 25 years ago and they taught him to drive a tractor trailer but he is a local city driver. All these years he's never seen a log book and never gone into a weigh station. Doesnt need to. Maybe this is one reason OTR companies dont count local driving as experience. He knows how to drive a truck but nothing of regs, logs, HOS, mapping, trip planning, etc.

you enter at 65 mph pull on the scale and slam on the brakes, this will allow the scale master to weigh your truck and determine if your load might shift. also be sure to keep your windows up and your radio on, if you dont, the scale master may talk to you over his magic box and maybe even want you to come inside which just wastes your valuable time. another good process is to find a truck with prepass and drive beside him in the left lane as you pass the scale, this will hide you from the scale master and save you even more time. hope this helps.. be safe and remember.. rubber side down..

Don't forget that if it is night time to put your lights on bright so the scalemaster can see you.

Scoe 08-28-2007 11:14 AM

Now wait just a minute, you're leading this poor boy astray.

You didn't even bother to mention that he should give some long toots on the air horn to show that it works and to take off his seat belt so the weighmaster can see you better. Oh yeah, if you have any trash set it out as you enter the scale and they'll dispose of it for you, just another service that the DOT will perform for professional drivers.

continental 08-28-2007 12:31 PM

Well now, boys, don't mislead him!
He wants to know what happens if he's pulled in.
First thing, you have drop your trousers, they'll want to know that you have both of your nuts. That is called a Level 3 inspection.
For a Level 1 you will have to bend over. :?

First of all, most of you are either as fukin stupid as everyone makes truckers seem..... or your just ignorant..... and that you can only blame mama for!!!

As I said before.... I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A LOCAL DRIVER.... that means NO LOGS (always within 150 miles), NO SCALES (non in the city...DUH)!!!!! I seriously don't understand what you can't understand about that??? But thanks for NOTHIN!!! I went through my first scale today, without ANY knowledge about what to do!!! This is a rare case too.... because everytime I've needed help or just some simple opinions, I could turn here to C.A.D. and get more help then I could imagine..... my questions/comments would be answered.... and I'd seem to learn somethin EVERYTIME I logged in! Thanks for fukin that all to hell!!! So go ahead and bash me.... call me fake, a cracker jack CDL holder, WHATEVER!!! But go get me a tractor and a 53 footer.... and I'll alley dock it down your ass crack and right in your fukin holes.....

The only knowledge you need when entering a scalehouse is to have the ability to read, write. In other words,be literate. There are big signs in the scale that have instructions. Just follow them. It isn't rocket science.

I was referring to scales that are on U.S. highways, such as the obscure ones on hwy. 54 and hwy 70 going east outside of Alamogordo to name a few.

Well first off I think you need to drop down a couple of gears and re-think your position here. First you start a thread about not having a log book. Now you post about not even knowing if you need to enter a scale or not, much less what to do when you do enter one. You need to have a FRANK talk with your boss and tell him/her that you need some OTR training. Yes they are two different worlds. I have done both and know what you are going thru.

As far as the replies to this thread; use your head here and learn from them. There is some very good information there if your smart enough to figure it out. ( And I'm sure you are.)

Now as a moderator: That will be the LAST time you will post a reply like that!

The ball is now in your court. Do with it what you will.

okay, if you REALLY need help. here's what you do..if the sign says all trucks enter weigh station, that means if you are in a truck, you enter the weigh station, of the sign says closed. then you can keep going. if the sign in the weigh station says maintain xmph. then you maintain xmph. if it says keep 100 feet apart, you keep 100 feet apart. if you get a green arrow pointing to one lane, you use the lane the arrow points to. if the sign says stop drive axle here or stop steering axle here, then you stop the drive or steering axle here, if the sign says do not stop on scale., then do not stop on scale. if the sign says on red pull to right and park, then if it's red you pull to the right and park and go inside. if the officer gives you directions over the loudspeaker, then you follow his directions. if you pass an open scale accidentley, then pull over and walk back with your paperwork and explain. if you dont do this, be prepared to be chased down and brought back to the scale for a complete inspection and a hefty fine.. NOW, I really hope this helps..

greg3564 08-28-2007 02:30 PM

I don't buy this guy's :dung: . Even as a bulk driver for Coke he would have to pull into weigh stations. Anyone who has had a CDL for ANY period of time knows you have to pull into the weigh station and have to have a log book. Common sense here. This guy's a troll.

THANK YOU!!!!! This is all I was looking for..... just a little info and help! Nowhere in the Toledo or surrounding areas is there a scale. I've driven sideload, bulk, and OFS for Coke for 5 1/2 years.... and ALL within 150 miles!!! So no, there was no need for a log. But I do appreciate the help so thanks!
