I tried that. And when I looked up my wife was just staring.....staring....then she picked up her cell phone and walked to the bathroom and closed the door. I can hear her whispering on the phone.....

Turn the jake brake OFF. What is happening is when you freak out like you said and hit the brakes the jake is dropping the rpm's to fast for you tu downshift and you are missing the sweat spot. Just tap the gas slide it out hold steady pressure on gas and slide it in if it dont go try a lil more or less pressue on the gas. You should not have to hit the brakes unless you are going from 10th to 6th,7th. But with your experiance level should be downshifting all gears sequintal.

Put your right foot half on the brake and half on the throttle and learn to apply the brakes while also working the throttle and downshifting at the same time.

Once you get the hang of it, it is a very smooth way to slow down or stop, while using the engine and jake brake to assist.

Well I've tried this method over the past 2-days. Takes a bit-of-getting used to--that's for sure!

My steel toe boots (LTL) make it a wee-bit difficult to bend my ankle just right for steady pressure on the brake & gas.
Once you get the hang of it--not too bad! :)

this may sound weird, but when trying to downshift , if your having trouble finding the right speed & rpm's to go in next lower gear... try putting right foot heel on go pedal & top of right foot on brake to rev up & brake at same time to get the disired match of rpm's to get into gear. this whole process takes couple sec's to do. i was taught this by ole timer. does anyone else do this ?

kilog55 05-31-2007 05:49 AM

thats the main suggestion so far

the heel toe deal.. i use that a lot. lol. especially comes in handy when stopped on a steep grade & needing to go uphill. or more common .. when needed to slow down real quick while trying to downshift from tenth to 2nd real quick. this happens when coming unexpectedly into a backup..

If you're going pretty fast, or the RPMs are kind of high, you'll really have to rev the engine to shift down into the previous gear. But the lower the RPMs, the less you'll have to rev it to get it into the previous gear. When it comes time to down shift, wait until the engine is barely above idle, then you should only have to tap the gas pedal for it to shift.
