Put your right foot half on the brake and half on the throttle and learn to apply the brakes while also working the throttle and downshifting at the same time.

That's the way I do it, and most old school drivers do it. It's is very frustrating to try and teach somebody how to do it. It will come with time. Everybody has a little bit of variation to it. Good luck. Keep practicing.

Keep steady pressure on the throttle; ease it into neutral; increase pressure on the throttle; press (don't jab) the shifter into gear.

Wouldn't it come out of gear easier if you took just a little off the throttle? I don't understand holding pressure on the throttle when trying to take it out of gear going into neutral. What am I missing?

maybe you should consider going with an auto shift company?

LOL @ how mean some of you are. geez. Someone comes to you asking for help, or trying to understand your method of driving, and all you can do is come back with a snide remark.

The key is not to gas it or let up. You need to be in between. To much peddle it will not come out, to much letting up it will get stuck. As you reach top rpm in any gear, right as you let off the peddle, pull it out.
( that's what she said)

No. It comes out easier if you add a little throttle.
That's because at that point in time the truck is pushing the transmission, right? So to take the load off the gears you would need to speed the engine up (just a little) to take the load off the gears.

For those of us who float the gears, recall that when your downshifting, you often need to tap the throttle just a tad to allow the transmission to disengage itself from the momentum of the truck.

Maybe you're right. I'll give that my utmost attention and thought. I'm assuming you drive an automatic or have never shifted without a clutch. Like me, you may also learn a little by following this thread. Best of luck!

I wasnt trying to be smart. some people just cant get the hang of shifting, but are good drivers otherwise. That's why some companies are going to autos. I dont drive an auto now, but I have driven one and I loved it. I can shift fine, but it took a while to learn when I started driving 300 years ago. I started on the old maxidyne. if you learn to shift them, you can drive anything.
Sorry if you were offended. What you really need to do is find someone who drives and have them go with you and help you learn. I'm sure you get it in time, it's like swimming, once you figure it out, it comes naturally.

This is works best for me. Dont know how anyone else prefers to shift.
downshifting (say from 10th to 9th):::

Take out of 10th gear and put in neutrel.

Give gas to put the tac in range of 1500-1700 rpm.

Put in 9th gear before tac drops below 1500rpm. If the tac needle drops below 1500 rpm before you try to put it in gear, it probably wont go in. No panic, just give it some gas and try again.

Thats about the best I can explain it. Also, its important to not waste time thinking about what your gonna do while your in the process of doing it. If your timing is not right, you wont get it in gear. Just watch those rpms. It should slide in gear if you get it before it drops below 1500rpm. Even sitting at home in your chair, go through the motions and shift pattern to help get more comfortable with it.
.................................................. .................................................. ......
As far as regular upshifting go's, I seen someones post not too long ago, and they suggested using "The Adams Family" theme song to help you such as how the song go's....
"da da da da CLUTCH CLUTCH"

I imagine this would help greatly as far as your timing go's...Wish I had this tip while I was training.

Hope this helped.
