Going local...
 

I'm actually really nervous to go local. Gordon is everything and the only thing I know about trucking. I understand 100% how they work, the customers and i knew my friends. Now I'm starting over and don't know a thing. Anyone else miss trucking as much as I do but likes being home? :lol:


What's the best way to apply to local outfits?

A. Drive around and pick up and fill out app's in person at the terminal?
B. Phone call's?
C. Applications online?


There's a ton of local companies in sacramento and surrounding area's but most of them don't have a website or phone # on the truck or a website at all. How do you apply to find out more info about these companies? Usually the ones who don't stop in truck stops.


I'd like to get a job with a company who pulls trailers around town rather than a dump or concrete truck.... Any advice for going local? Do I need to get my hazmat?

Yeah, you want to get an idea of what local companies do. If you wish to try to get on with an LTL freight company, I would talk to the drivers, and see if they are hiring. If you do find some good info, and if it is for an LTL freight outfit,(Fed Ex,ABF,etc)I would get the HAZMAT, because you will need it with those guys. I would check the local paper, and see who is needing drivers. If you want to work like a dog, maybe look into the food business. SYSCO,Ben E Keith,US Food Service. Happy Hunting.

Hey Kona, i kept up on your blog, and see that you're going local now, i don't know if it's any of your interest, but i'll bring it up for the heck of it, i haul sod in Florida, i'm almost certain California has as strong of an idustry for sod, and agricultural businesses as we do in Florida. If you're looking for an interesting job give it a shot, anything agriculture related, or in the building industry usually means an interesting day, i've never really been a freight hauler, i did my time in OTR and that was about all the "freight" i've hauled, i take a special liking to what i do, i like the challenge in what i do. I've also hauled tankers, and drove dumps and notice that california has a lot of that going on too, whatever you decide i hope it's to your liking, just thought i'd give my 2 cents on the topic.

hey kona i haul SH*T. for real lol. Go around to your local septic company's if you live some what in a country or suburbs. Try to get on to a T/T job. You may have to work in SH*T but it pays good and your home every night and really it ain't that bad of a job. I hardly ever get it on me.(since i said that i know 2marrow i will take a bath lol). Don't go in a straight truck unless you like hard back braking work i did that for a long time. Just my 2cents if you want more info just say so. if not i understand lol :lol:

Hey Kona, I know Lowe's starts there driver's off at about $17.50 in WA.
They may pay more in CA.

Maybe you could haul fruit?

I just went in and got applications, usually I'd start up a conversation until the subject of my experience came up and they politely told me I wasn't worth the waste of their time. :roll:

You can actually get past that point so you may get hired on the spot. Airgas seems to be hiring a lot of drivers, give them a try.

what's everyone's thoughts about using a temp company to find a job. A place where I let them find a job for me?

Just make sure that it is temp to hire and not short term work. Short term work can be a pain in the ass going from job to job.
