newbie with a question
 

how yall doin guys? i have a question bout trucking, i am looking into a career change within a foodservice company as a delivery driver. i do not currently have my class a but am lookin into gettin it soon, but my question is do foodservice companys look at your class c license to determine employment? and also i heard from a driver that if you get a class a license your class c is cleared?

Don't know what you mean by "cleared", but a Class A supercedes any other class of license, like a ''C". BOL

If you have lots of "problems" on your class C.. you still have lots of problems (and usually a large training school bill to pay back) with a class A (CDL)

When you get a Class A or B liscence it is an upgrade, not a replacement to your current liscence. Your MVR goes with you.

I don't know of many food service companies that will hire you with a Class C. The company I work for did hire someone without his class A and trained him to get his Class A, but they were pretty desperate for drivers at the time, and this guy was the brother of another driver.

You should get your class A *first* and then apply. Even if you don't have experience, if they are desperate enough they may train you.

There are food company's that will hire you with a class B only. They have straight trucks in their fleet, but I'm sure the rate of pay is less!

Yeah I suppose, though I think his chances are probably better with Class A.

We have straight trucks in our fleet too, but we won't hire a Class B because if someone is sick or something and they need to do last minute changes they don't want to be limited by license class.

Thanks for all the replies, but my question is do companies look at your class c license to determine employment if you have just got your class a? And how long do companies look back, is it 3 or 7 yrs?

Employers will look at any license that you have had in the past 5 years. They are looking for any points, accidents or suspensions in the last 3 years and any DUI/DWI 's in the last 5 years.

Just because you change from a class "c" license to a class "a" license does not make any tickets, etc that you may have go away. They will still be on your driving record and will have to be approved by your employers insurance company.

Ok cool thanks for the reply larry. I had my license suspended back in april 02 for not paying fees, but i i have a reckless driving back in october 04. they both show on my record for the next 7 yrs but would employers dismiss the suspended license since its been more than 3 yrs? I know i would have to deal with the reckless cuz its only been 2 yrs and that is 2 points. In your opinion would a company hire me looking at that? I am asking because I want to get ito trucking but dont want to spent the money right now on trucking school and not be able to get employed after that, you know what i mean?
