What is your salary?

What do you rookies take in per year? How about you mid-career folks? Lets hear from the niche market professionals as well too.

I'd like to consider trucking one day and would like to know if the take home pay is something I could live with.

Sealord 10-31-2006 06:19 AM

Not Salary

It's hourly or piece rate (CPM) for company drivers. For O/O it's what's left over after all expenses are met. BOL

Yeah I knew that just wondering what it roughly boils down to in yearly figures. They say multiply hourly *2000 to get your yearly rate. Thanks

Malaki86 10-31-2006 06:33 AM

For a rookie driver, figure $0.30 x 100,000 miles per year. That'll give you rough ballpark amount.

Then, from that amount, subtract $100.00 x 52 for living expenses on the road (and that's if you live 'cheap' on the road).

shahan 10-31-2006 07:17 AM

$40,000 the 1st year

ratchet 10-31-2006 08:02 AM

Your going to find that no one will give you their real numbers most will give you real generic answers. I realize there are many variables. As a local driver I get paid by the day. I get $200 a day, 5 days a week, usually only work 10 hours a day but every now and then a little more. So that averages out to $52000 year gross and I have 2 yrs experience. So here is a real answer for you.

joasis 10-31-2006 08:03 AM

There is no hard, fast scale of trucker income....if you are a truck stop cowboy...and making 400 miles a day is your average, you won't live well....if you are an O/O doing 3000 a week hauling OD and specialized, you may trip 225k and up, which explains why you own a beautiful 379 or a W900.......no comparison.

BIG JEEP on 44's 10-31-2006 08:35 AM

assuming you get freight...take your CPM multiply it by 100,000...this is based working for 10 months out of the year in total with an average of around 2500 miles a week with 10,000 miles averaged per month.

To base your salary on much more than 2500 per wk and 10k per month is not realistic, yes you will have weeks where you run more but you will have them where you run less ,so 2500 is a good realistic average ...and running legal... Basing your income on ten months comes from the fact most people want to go home ... I figure 60 non productive days is fair as if you worked local you would usually have a weekend every week it might not be Saturday an Sunday but you would usually have 2 days off per week this comes out to 96 days off per year ...So I think 60 for OTR is conservative ....

Mackman 10-31-2006 09:03 AM

I will make around 45-50k this year driving local. Drive a septic truck(honeydipper) also do bulk hauling alot to. I make 18.74 an hr. With full benefits. All the OT i can handle. OT pay is anything over 8 hrs.

richey94 10-31-2006 09:15 AM

If things continue as they have been then Jeff will make about $46,000 at TMC but he hasn't received his raise yet either.

Deus 10-31-2006 09:24 AM

I hope to make around $55,000 this year, doing local/regional. Been doing this for just over a year now. I was on track to pull down $60,000 until hours got cut.

Not typical at our company for new drivers, but I lucked out!

GoldiesPlating 10-31-2006 09:54 AM

On track to make about $60,000 this year.

marcel27208 10-31-2006 10:27 AM

as so happens i just recieved my quarterly statement from accountant.... i drive local, im an owner operator ive driven 77k paid miles 56% loaded 42% empty and the rest bobtail have grossed 111k, net 63k, so far this year those percentages MT and loaded miles may be off a little, its probably of the 77k ive driven half MT, half loaded

NascarFan 10-31-2006 10:44 AM

I'm on sallery and make $60,000yr

JBenson2 10-31-2006 11:33 AM

Hey, zz4guy,

What is your take-home pay?

jeremyh 10-31-2006 11:43 AM

I just got this job hauling fuel. I'm on pace to make $60,000-$65,000 CAN this year and I have about a year and a half of experience driving truck.

downriverrob 10-31-2006 11:47 AM

YEA ZZ4GUY, WHATS YOUR TAKE HOME PAY HAA???

Rev.Vassago 10-31-2006 12:23 PM

A hunnerd million dollars a week.

areyouvi3t 10-31-2006 01:15 PM

i make bout 90k gross on paper, a company driver and am out 5 days a week but work only 4 (1 day laying over at hotel.) drive bout 2500 miles a week, dedicated run. also, company pays my meals (20.00 a day). the money i make lumping the load is estimated at about 1000.00 a month (250.00 a week) and that's not on paper but in my pocket. company gives us cash every trip. so i guess i make over 100k a year being a company driver...................and i aint the only one, most of us at my company make the same, if not more. the highest anyone from my company made was 130,000 a year. this was last year. i have never had to tap the atm machine at all since i've been with this gig.

yoopr 10-31-2006 01:29 PM

Happy Halloween

GMAN 10-31-2006 01:29 PM

OK, I will be the first to bite. Who do you work for and what type of freight do you haul to make $100,000/yr?

yoopr 10-31-2006 01:31 PM

I'm sure somebody who likes to play with figures will break all of this down :P

Trucker's calculator in hand.

$100,000 per year / 45 weeks per year (I assume you take SOME vacation) = $2222.22 per week.

$2222.22 per week - $250.00 per week lumping = $1972.22

$1972.22 / 2500 miles per week = $0.78 per mile

And here's where it gets fun:

1. 2500 miles per week / 4 days = 625 miles per day, plus loading and unloading. 625 miles / 55 mph = 11.36 hours per day driving  . Way to show that you are fudging your logs.

2. $1000 per month for loading and unloading paid "under the table". Way to show you are committing tax fraud.

You are a liar, areyouvi3t.

areyouvi3t 10-31-2006 02:09 PM

hahaha i know it's hard to believe, but trust me, it's true as the bible, i have witnesses. i give you a hint, my company is not really in the trucking business to make money off of hauling freight, it's in the business of what avondale PA. is known for.

why would i lie for, i'm just giving informtion that someone requested  and i don't drive 55 mph in every state as every state has different speeds.........your calculation is off..........i said on paper i make bout 90k.......therefore i make bout 1800.00 gross a week not counting the lumping.

well, let me just say that i am a calm driver and let alot of things rub off me, but this time, i will get mines.
this happened last week in eden prairie, MN. as i was heading to an intersection(from a 2 to 1 lane), i signaled to go right and some cars from the opposing side made that quick left(my right), and just as i was in the middle of the intersection, attempting to make the hard right, a yellow p/u truck (w/ a pallet full of boxes on the back, shrunk wrapped)from the opposing side comes flying thru the intersection right in front of me, forcing me to slam my brakes, stalling the engine. after i stopped, he stopped...............i put up my hands like "WTF are you doing????!!!) and he had the nerve to do the same thing back like it was my fault if i didn't stop, he would've been at fault, but being the professional i am i see things before it happens.
so i let him go on by, since he was in my way anyways. now we both are about to merge onto rt. 169 southbound. i guess he was trying to get away from me so he floors it onto the highway, and remember that pallet full of boxes on the back? yes!!!! 2 cases flew off the top and i thought, "wow, karma really does work" so as the cases flew onto the highway, it was free game. all the 4 wheelers moved out the way, and the yellow p/u truck pulls to the side to wait for a chance to go get it. well, buddy, remember the saying" what comes around, goes around", this is the go around i ran over both cases with the whole right side of my rig and looked in the mirror to make sure it was shredded to pieces and the highway was littered with debris. after that, i slowed down to take a look at my fellow D!ckhead that thought he got away with toying with a trucker. he had his head on the steering wheel on his forearms. i know he drives for some little outfit because his truck had some kind of logo on it, i forgot but i sure hope he learns his lesson and yield the right of way next time.
now that i look back on it, that was mean, but it was at the heat of the moment, and if you're out there reading this, don't get mad you couldn't drive a real truck, that's not my fault, be nice.

anyone else have a story to tell, do share!
