Shifting with the JAKE
Subscribewhat a bunch of goofballs. if you wanna leave the jake on all the time, use the clutch to shift. it has nothing to do with the skill of the driver, whether it is a dump truck or not, just use the clutch or turn the jake off

Dammit Mack! Why'd you bump this old thread? This SOB is like two years old!
BTW, I've done some rock hauling and I'm well aware of the skill it takes to do the job without tearing stuff up. I hauled an end dump which, IMO, takes even more skill. Skill I don't yet have, actually. In OTR flatbedding I do have to go offroad into construction sites and the like from time to time, but it's not like it's a daily thing. But, yeah, some OTR drivers do get offroad experience! 8)

Well I don't use it while up-shifting. Not normally anyway. Doesn't really make much sense to do so unless you just like noise. Personally, I hate Jake brakes. I'll only use mine when it's really necessary for slowing down on a hill while saving the brakes. Just don't like the noise.

I thought using a Jake in low gear could be harmful to the rear diff?
I, personally, think that using the jake all the time is not a good idea.

OMG, I shift with it on and never use the clutch you goofy &%$@#!%...... I never take my foot off the throttle completely, this leaves the jake off unless you completely let off the throttle all the way... I shift without the clutch and just know how much throttle to get the next gear you goofy &%$@#!%...... clutch is to start and stop unless you need to clutch because you can't just shift by rpm and road speed you goofy &%$@#!%......Originally Posted by jedfxg

Jake Brake is on pretty much all the time unless I am rolling really slow in traffic or T/S or yada yada.
I am just trying to extend the service life of my brakes as much as possible.
Another poster mentioned about not having brake lights come on when you use your jake and that is something I try to pay attention too. Alot of jake and a little pressure on the pedal to get the lights to come on.
Of course you should take this all with a grain of salt, I am a dirt dummie after all
