To qualify for FFT2 (wildland firefighter) we had to pass the “pack test” as a requirement.
This is a walking test done with 45 pound weight vest, carried 3 miles within 45 minutes.

Just try to walk 3 miles in 45 minutes on a flat road, with no weight...see if you can do it. :D
Walking is my favorite exercise routine, and I always was able to control or even loose weight with walking, but you do have to lean into the wind, and act like your stealing something.

Bicycling for the lungs and heart. I have a bike route around the upper part of a lake I live on, that is about 16miles. It's a good distance for me, doesn't take long, and it's a real peaceful scenic ride. This you can do at an easy pace and have good results.

Actually a lot of sports therapist advise against using these, they cause a lot of joint problems.

Mackman, I would run like Forrest Gump if I could, but my knees don't hold up like they used to. I do a light jog for a bit, and then I will go back to a fast walk.

I've heard it both ways. I've been told that walking don't do squat, but I've also heard that walking is the best thing you can do. I do know that walking helps with diabetes, and helps control cholesterol. I will say one thing-I better be getting a work out, because I'm sore all over, and my arms feel like spaghetti. :p

Roadhog... Yes, this time of year is nice down at Padre. I've never been there, but I bet the scenery is lovely. :D

 .... reminds me of a David Lee Roth quote; “I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.”

Depending on the surface, running can be worse than walking on the body. I ran track in school and we had an asphalt track, after 2 years it destroyed my knees. It got to the point that I would run on the inside or outside in the grass during practices' to save my knees for when we had home events and I had no choice but to run on the actual track. The best place to run is on grass or a rubberized track to save your knees because eventually they will give out on you with the constant pounding on a hard surface like sidewalks or asphalt. At the same time, also make sure you get some new running shoes every 4-6 months, they do get worn out if your running every day and that will also put additional strain on your knees and more directly into your feet. Again, found out the hard way while doing track. Us long distance runners would go thru shoes as quickly as they were going out of style, then again we were running 6-8 miles a day.

Go out for training at Coronado. See if you can keep with the guys there. U S Navy facility. If you want to run, that's a great place to do it. I believe there have been a few changes over the last 42 years, but I'm betting it's still the ultimate challenge.
