Driver on Driver . .

Deadly stabbing on Edens Expressway - 1/15/10 - Chicago News - abc7chicago.com |

That's not good. I've heard guys going back and forth on the radio, but I've always wondered how many drivers actually 'pull over' and fight-it-out. This may not be the case, but it sounds like he was having a face-to-face argument before he got stabbed. Looks like the killer got away with that one. |
Several years ago I spoke with an agent that I know who told me about one of their drivers who was arrested for murder. He and another driver started going at it on the CB. One thing led to another and they both pulled over. The other driver came back to this guy and opened his door and the guy got 3 shots in the chest. The guy who shot him is now in prison for murder. Had he only shot once he probably would not have been charged. I suppose multiple shots makes a difference. The agent told me that this guy was easy going and had a family. For some reason he went over the edge on this one. I have no idea why some people feel the need to say things on the CB that they would not consider face to face. It would have been best if this guy had simply turned his CB off or down and ignored the other guy. He is now sitting in prison and has lost everything that he owned. When I spoke with the agent his wife was attempting to sell his truck and trailer so that they could pay legal fees and get along.
I have heard of a few incidents where two drivers have gotten into something that started on the CB. It is better to just walk away. Words can't kill someone. |
That's a shame.....so many lives ruined for nothing.
Good advice GMAN. I couldn't get along with my team mate and our DM told me to stop, get out and have a smoke and continue driving when I cooled off. I took her her up on it.When we got into Dallas I had him drop me at the terminal and I got off the truck. |
Never had a CB on the truck when I was OTR, and probably won't get one whenever I get spinnin' again.
With all the other things to get angry over, a wayward CB conversation is the last thing I want to get hauled in for. |

It is better to get away from a bad situation rather than allow it to fester and build into something that gets out of control. |

You will need a CB when you arrive at some shippers. I know a number of drivers who keep their CB down or off unless they need something, such as directions. |
Whew!!!! You had me worried for a minute there Gman. I thought you were talking abou.... never mind......:D

Deadly force is allowed but if you have shot someone three times in the head, they are obviously dead on the first one, no need for two more. A good lawyer could possibly save you but it could easily get you a murder charge. If you shoot them in the leg then a lawyer can argue that they kept coming so you fired again, good chance of getting off as self defense. It depends on where you shoot them and how many times you shoot as to whether it can be considered self defense or not. I know it used to be here that if someone tried to break into your house and you killed them, they had to be within the residence to be considered self defense. If they fell backwards out a window or door and landed outside it was considered murder or even though the door or window was broke open.

What state was that in? In most of them now you are allowed to use deadly force to protect yourself and some you property also. I would think some guy running over and yanking your door open would count as feeling threatened the same as an attempted car-jacking. That driver must have had a terrible lawyer.
It was in Mississippi. I don't recall too much about some of the other details. I think that if he had only shot him once that he might not have been charged. It was the other two that got him. At least, that is the way it was conveyed to me. |

I didn't mind the walk, unlike some of those clowns who remained glued to the seat. Luckily when I drove with the Mc Big Boys, it was majorly drop-in, unhook, then hook back, or go somewhere else to restart my weekly routine. Ah, repetition. |

With all the other things to get angry over, a wayward CB conversation is the last thing I want to get hauled in for. So, not having a radio, or not being a part of it, may not be enough to keep you safe. About 5 or 6 years ago, a KK Way driver was sleeping in his bunk, parked on a ramp along I-39 in WI. He was found shot to death in his sleeper. No leads. I've heard guys tell someone else to "PULL IT OVER AND I'LL SHOW YOU". If you're ahead of that guy, and pull it over for any reason, you become a target. Whether you know about it or not. If you're listening to a pair of these Rambos, you know that you do not want to stop for any reason. As long as you're moving, you're a harder target to hit. |

Some years back, in Indiana, there were a couple of Rambos going at it on the radio. Later, a Covenant driver stopped on the shoulder to wet down a tire. North American pulled up behind him, got out and went to the shoulder. Covenant got several shots pumped into him (he did survive), and North American got stopped by the PD about 50 miles farther east on the turnpike. It was noted that Covenant did not have anything to do with the argument on the CB. Didn't even know the argument had taken place.

T/S's and those little mom/pop shops like you would find along the 80 in NV. Still though, never quite thought of that one. |

Exactly why I would make it an effort to never stop in an area that looks even remotely deserted.

We've got some locals here that are always jabbering on the radio. They are sitting at home on their big base radio, getting the drivers wound-up. It's a wonder none of them got plugged. I could just see it in the paper- about 10 trucks in front of a house.
A lot of guys sound "big" on that radio, but what if someone actually decided to see that person, in person. :hellno: |

Ever since that driver got shot in Indiana, whenever I'm considering a truck stop, I turn on the radio as I approach it. If there are a couple of Rambos going at it, I don't even slow down. I tend to park at a truck stop that has nothing going on, unless I'm delivering "next door" (or almost) the next morning.
Nothing wrong with lurkin' and scannin' the channels like some sort of audio-voyeur!! |

What's funny is that they aren't very hard to find when they are actually in their car yapping on their big radio. Can't miss the big 8 ft whip on the roof and your needle getting pinned out when their near. As soon as they realize they've been spotted they go dead quiet and try to disappear in the traffic. I've messed with the one before, he did a complete 180 on the radio when he realized I was sitting right beside him and claimed that it wasn't him I was talking at. Dude is a nerd and thought he was a big bad Rambo because nobody could see him thru the radio. Dad was telling of one back in the day at Southland Corp who would run his mouth on the radio 24-7, he got caught one night in a desolate area of highway running his mouth by the 3 trucks he was yapping at. He made it out alive, with bullet holes in the side of the truck as they did a drive-by on him. They paid attention to their needle since he wouldn't shut up and eventually tracked him down. Dad himself had one that kept yapping at everyone and bragging how nobody was going to find him so he would keep on yapping. Dad got on the radio and televised his location and truck info, guy freaked out when he realized Dad was right behind him the whole time, got off the highway and went silent. |
Here is one I will never forget. I was stuck in the backup. The next day I couldn't believe what I read in the paper. I always had thoughts of pulling over and confronting people who cut me off, but this story will make you think twice.

UPDATE: CB Rambosis . .
Man charged for trucker murder | Chicago Press Release Services
I don't use a CB so I can't imagine getting into this situation but I guess the tailgating could happen to anyone . . what would you do? |
great thread!
I've been doing my runs without a cb for the last few times and its killing me.....or so I thought. Example: I was in Helena Mt and drove 10 miles east, west, north, and even south to find a TA or like truck stop. NOTHING! They don't have one in the whole city. Sure would of liked a cb so I can ask someone and another example: when I go over the passes in MT I sure would like to ask someone how the roads are. BUT no CB. Now I read this thread and it makes me think I should not even get one. That way I keep my blood pressure low. All my customers know me and I go to the same places every time and it will not change. Plus: I'm sure I've pissed some drivers off cause my lights are so freaking bright on low been and blinding on high beam. But I can't fix that so I just do my job and drive. Now if I had a cb and someone spouted off when I am having a bad day, chances are I would spout back and so it would begin.....Thats something I need in my life.... I guess if I really need a cb I can get one and turn it off when I don't ask for questions....? But the more I think about it the more I realize it is not a MUST HAVE for me. I have been fine with out one and will be fine in the future..... The last thing anyone needs is a argument over the cb for something stupid after a long day of driving. Then throw in some back country highway with no one around but you, wild animals and a pissed off driver who wants to hurt you.....all that equals no good..... Sad story and condolences to the family....no one deserves what happened to him. |
It's good that they found him. I guess he will be 'away' for a good while. I wonder how they found him?
