Am I a jerk for calling him in?
I was parked at the Pilot in Battle Creek, MI earlier, and a SNI truck was parked across from me. The guy was in his driver's seat, enjoying his McDonalds lunch. Apparently, he didn't like his fries or something, because he opened his window and tossed them out onto the ground. I guess getting out and waddling his fat ass to the trash can that was sitting right behind his truck was too much work, so I figured I'd let SNI know what a great example the driver was making of their company.
Am I a jerk for giving a damn? (BTW, since they have an automated phone system specifically for situations like this, they obviously want people to call in on their drivers....) |
Litter bugs and those who flip their cigarette butts out the window rate up there with child molesters.
you done right by me. Ya should of found a broom and walked over to him and say. ' here driver, i see you need help sweeping your mess up, then hand him the broom and walk off. Oh heck , might as well go find the Pilot Manager , and let him know whos littering in his lot. |

If another driver would ever come up to me with a broom i would laugh right in his face. BTW Rev in a way you did the right thing but i dont think your phone call will do much good. |
I can understand your frustration of litterbugs, even lawbreakers of any extent. I wouldn't have called that particular offense in, but I am on your side, and care less about the litterbug.
As far as throwing cigs out the window. I retired last April from my Fire Dept. Throughout my career, we got a surprising amount of calls, to Wild Land fires, we confirmed were started by cigs. I won't go on about that further, as we all know the obvious results of that carelessness. A criminal act is a criminal act. I've done my share of acting poorly, and now, I find it hard to look down on anyone else. I have limits though when I will take action against a wrong doing. We need to be more proactive, but sadly there would be no end to it. |

Maybe, that would have caused him to ASSAULT you--- then, you'd have something serious against him. I find it really a sad sign of the times--- everyone's got a cell phone and willing to report -- little crap like this-- but, when it comes to Big stuff that could get you landed in court as a witness---there could be hundred people standing around and nobody saw a damn thing. yeah, you did the right thing--- but did the parking lot get cleaned up?-- will that driver just be pissed that some anonymous person ' sprinkled some crap in his cornflakes' and make it a point to dump more garbage around then flip the bird to the world( just in case there's someone watching again) |
Did he dump the fries out or the fries AND the box?
If it's biodegradable, it ain't littering. -p. |

I don't litter, ever, in a parking lot or going down the road. And although I used to, I don't throw cig buts out the window anymore either. Too many wildfires in the beautiful country that I get to drive through.
But, I'd sure like to see someone come up to me if I DID throw a cig butt out the window and tell me I'm no better than a pedophile! I might even pay his hospital bill when I was through with him! Now, Skier, I ain't got nothing against you, heck.... I was looking forward to some good talks with you about the mountains and such. But, you just made one ASSININE statement! |

I picked the third option, simply because I'm under the impression that you were expecting it to be selected. And far from me to disappoint, you know?
Anyhow, I don't see what the big deal is. When I drove OTR, there was nothing I enjoyed more than parking in a truck stop at the end of a day's driving, then walking through the trash filled lot, taking in the scenery of plastic bags and piss bottles strewn about the asphalt, while enjoying the succulent aroma of rotting food and urine. Nothing like that to whet the appetite, let me tell you. |

Yes i was to hard with my comment. I just don't like seeing anyone throw stuff out the window and liiter our planet. I'm not a tree hugger by anyway shape or form. But when someone can't find a garbage can to get rid of something, that just isn't right. We are all repersentives of the trucking industy, be it co, o/o. l/o which is already suffering from a poor public image. |
Ehh, I just stick a wally world bag on the side of the passenger seat, throw my garbage in it, let it overfill for a while, start collecting on the dash, on the floor, on the pass seat, in the little nooks and crannies, in the sleeper, etc. Then once it needs to be taken out, get a large trash bag or 4, stuff it all in, hope I get it all, drive up to a dumpster and throw it all out from the window (usually done while bobtailing), and start the process all over :).
Ok I am not THAT BAD! But I did have a bag in that spot, and when it got full I either threw it out while stepping out of my truck to do something, or actually bobtail to a dumpster and chuck it :P. As far as someone throwing french fries out the window, professional? No, but it's french fries, who gives a flying rat! Something will come along and eat it eventually, probably a coolie carrier lease op, maybe an animal. |

Am I a jerk for giving a damn? Seriously, though, did you conduct a bird inventory? (There are guidlines on the Audubon website.) How are the ungrateful pigeons supposed to poop on your windshield if you don't feed them first? |
A driver once told me that the clean-up crew would be out of a job if he stopped littering
|
I lost sleep last night thinking about this. How could something as inconsequential, spur the sinister Rev to this level of outrage?
Added to the fact that I later learned no foil-faced or grease-laden wrapper was included, with the tater-toss. I determined with great apathy, that this was merely one of Rev's shenanigans. He merely wanted to start a highly insignificant debate over "small potatoes"....trivia if you will... to bring out the absurdity, and expose a measure of mental illness here at CAD. ...or he likes being called a Jerk, in as much as I like Scratch and Sniff ads. We all have our guilty pleasures, and it is fun to stir the madness and watch the spectacle. http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...nd10/smile.gif |
Tune in next time for Roadhog's Words of Wisdom. :P
|
The guy wasn't littering, he was feeding the wildlife. Birds just love McDonald's fries. You wouldn't deprive those little birds the opportunity to raise their cholesterol would you? :P
|
Since there was a pouring rain last night, the fries have disappeared anyway, so the entire thing is now moot. They have now become part of someone's tire grooves, and as a result are now part of the Interstate Highway System.
|
If it had been cracker crumbs or bread he was tossing from his truck would you have called his company to report it?
If it had been trash (wrappers, cans, boxes, etc) yeah I could see it, but food. Nope, not unless he is throwing large quantities of it on the ground as if he was emptying his cooler or tossing out product that his last consignee had refused. More than likely whenever someone calls in to a company with a complaint like this the person answering the phone and taking the message is thinking that someone needs to get a life. |

I wouldn't have called on him unless the box came out the window also. If he wants to feed the wildlife, fine by me as long as he doesn't leave litter behind and food isn't considered litter where I come from. It is considered a missile if thrown from a moving vehicle and it strikes another vehicle. That will net you some jail time around here.

Okay, now that this has been up for 24 hours, and I got responses on both sides, I am going to ask this of those who said it was "no big deal".
What if he threw a hamburger out his window? What about half a lasagna? At what point is it considered "littering", or "a big deal"? Would you have a problem with it if he did this on the front steps of your house? |

Are you a JERK, Rev??
Well, OF COURSE you are! :D :D Still, I think you did the right thing!! 8) 8) |
Rev, if it was on my front porch or the steps to my truck, then that's a tad bit different. If it's on my lawn, I could careless because the animals will have it in an hour and it will be gone. Doesn't matter what it is if it's food because again, I don't consider food to be trash.

I curse the ground your truck sits on that you be tormented by having drivers throw food out of their trucks anywhere you go! |
As far as the first question, I don't know if I would have called or not, it's hard to answer without actually having been there. However, littering is big on my pet peeve list no matter what it is. I understand food is biodegradable (although I agree with Rev that McD's isn't, here's proof) but why didn't the driver get out of the truck and throw it in grass? Laziness pure laziness, and I can't stand laziness.

As far as second question, refer to first, no excuses for laziness. |

So wouldn't it make sense that it might not be desirable to have rats and other scavengers there, as well? |

Excuse me.. places open to the public, I should say.
|
I left out "rude" and "disgusting" in my post above, but I agree completely. That type of attitude goes well beyond littering, it's the way they go through life. I can't stand those f**kers.
|
With the mindset of "it's only a little bit of food", it's no wonder that so many Wal Marts don't allow trucks to park there anymore.
Bottom line: There is no reason to throw your food on the ground instead of a trash can. EVER. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER. |
I don't think I quite understand........you mean never ever?? as in never? or ever?
|
It shows that the guy has no class and no manners. I guess his mama didn't raise him right.
