Well, you titled the thread "APOCRYPHA", but said nothing about it. I have enjoyed reading so far, but have not learned much that I didn't already know. Want to let out the secret??????
I promise, I won't slap you either.... |

Since you were unsure of the spelling I used a wildcard... type in "apoc*". It is always possible that "I" mispelled it in the search!!   Naw.........!! |

I promise, I won't slap you either.... Truth is, I'm vamping while I wait for Slim to show up... AND.... I'm waiting for my Dad to zip me some info and HIS opinion on it. The Apocrypha are a bunch of "books" or "writings" that were at some times included, and other times excluded from the Bible. Slim wants to know WHY. If you go to Wikipedia, and type in apocrypha you will learn the basics. Also, then click the link to the other Wiki article on Biblical Apocrypha. More info. Oh, and THANKS for not slapping me! The "girls" have that pretty much covered! |

Why were you looking for that?????      |
Ok I am here, Sorry been busy.. havn't had much time.. So what did your Dad say, and what is his opinion?
|
Okay, Slim.... here is my Dad's last email to me:
When the pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express Praise for answered prayers, a lady stood and walked to the podium. She said, "I have a praise. Two months ago, my husband Jim had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn't know if they could help him." You could hear an audible gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagined the pain that poor Jim experienced. She continued, "Jim was unable to hold me or the children and every move caused him terrible pain. We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation. They were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Jim's scrotum and wrap wire around it to hold it in place." Again, the men in the congregation squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Jim. She continued, "Now, Jim is out of the hospital and the doctors say, with time, his scrotum should recover completely." All the men sighed with relief. The pastor rose and tentatively asked if any one else had anything to say. A man rose, walked to the podium, and said, "I'm Jim, and I want to tell my wife - once again - the word is STERNUM." [I just thought you might get a kick out of that! I am constantly AMAZED at how my Dad is "loosening up" with the stuff going around on the internet! ] Seriously though, we had a long talk about it last night, and I told him it was important to YOU to hear HIS interpretation of the situation. I guess he's still researching and preparing his comments. He doesn't do anything "off the cuff." Sorry for the delay! The "short" of it though, is that those "books/writings" were (as Wikipedia explained) of dubious authenticity, and moreover, were "not scriptural!" Those are HIS words! The Roman Catholics were, in fact, the earliest established "Christian Church," and they had a process for CANNONIZING the scripture. These books didn't pass the test! Now.... "I" have no love for the Catholic Priesthood (nothing against practicing Catholics) but they DID have the right and responsibility to do this. Keep in mind, that LATER Popes, had different opinions, and these books WERE at one time part of the Bible. Later, as we discussed, after Martin Luther split away the Protestants, these books were at one time ADDED, and then again DELETED. So you see, there was MUCH controversy, and LITTLE consensus concerning the validity of these writings. I guess you'd have to say that, given the scrutinization of the Bible today, those in charge at the time, wanted it to contain ONLY the books/writings that were from bonafide Apostles. I'm pretty sure that THIS is the gist of what my Dad will say, but I implore you to pay LITTLE heed to what "I" say, and to wait for HIS more "qualified" analysis!! I am Nobody, compared to HIM! Although I ONCE considered that I had been "called" to the ministry, I rebelled and eschewed it! My father has over 50 years in the ministry, and a Doctorate of Divinity. (Meaning the skill to "divine" what the scriptures teach, and all things concerning them!) Still, I must offer a caveat. Open minded as he is.... he is STILL a Baptist Minister. His understanding MAY be "influenced" to SOME degree by his Denomination's viewpoint. I doubt I could ever get him to ADMIT it, but I believe he UNDERSTANDS it! To be honest with you.... I don't really KNOW what is in the books classified as the Apocrypha! And I have never really CARED. I believe there is MORE THAN ENOUGH in the "Cannonized" scriptures for me to argue with! But, as it seems to be important to YOU, I have involved myself AND my father in the discussion. And I am enjoying it! My father sees me as becoming interested in Biblical teachings and History.... and "I" find there is still MORE for me to learn! If I understand this correctly.... SOME of these books became central to the beliefs of the Gnostics. They believed that Mary Magdalene was an Apostle. I have seen pictures of the Last Supper that show the person to Jesus' right as being obviously feminine. But, there were no cameras back then! These are paintings, renditions, perhaps even "falsifications" for "schizmatic" purposes! I asked him about this. He said that women certainly held VERY high and important positions in the early Church! They were often "ministers" in certain capacities (and Mary of Magdalene BECAME such.) Even our Missionaries today, are often Women! But, there is no proof (to his knowledge) that a woman was EVER one of the 12 Apostles! Surely you understand that this was a time of Male domination. I asked his opinion of Women being "Pastors." Here is what he said: He told me that he once met a woman pastor in a small church in a remote part of the NC mountains, who ASKED him his opinion of her position. He said, "It is not for ME to judge what God has done! IF he called YOU to be a minister, or pastor of a church, "I" cannot question YOUR calling! "IF you have been ORDAINED (laying on of the hands of the deacons,) it is not for ME to question." But, he ALSO said (to me) that the Church is like a FAMILY in the scriptures. And, regardless of the realities of today, the scripture clearly says that a MAN shall be the head of a household! Now, we can ARGUE the Political Correctness of the scripture AND our LORD.... or we can accept that his INTENTION was that a MAN be the head of the Church! Having said all that, I feel that I MAY be way off base. As I said, I have never CARED to know what was in the Apocrypha! Heck.... I haven't even CARED to know what was in MOST of the scriptures of the Bible that you have quoted! You know the saying is.... "The DEVIL is in the details." Of course, that can be taken MANY ways, but perhaps it has SOME bearing on the way SOME of you get caught up in the DETAILS of Biblical scripture.... and therefore not only miss the point, but ALSO leave yourselves OPEN to the Devil's intention to strike at any and every detail he CAN! In My Humble Opinion.... the Bible is nothing more than a CODE of conduct! If it ever WAS a "book of Laws" it no longer IS! We are NOT the simpletons who wandered the desert with no idea how to find our way! We have GPS!! Someone on SOME thread (or in a PM) asked me if I was a Christian! Let me answer that NOW, becaue I am on a ROLL! A Christian, by definition, is "one who is Christ-like." I most certainly AM!! Jesus fed the hungry, healed the sick, and cared for the lowest class of humanity. He gave NO importance to WEALTH, and inspired a PEACEFULL existence among ALL mankind! I was raised in the Church, and my father is a very POWERFUL preacher! At the tender age of 7, I "surrendered" my life to Christ. I was "saved!" But.... saved from WHAT??? I hadn't even had a WET DREAM yet.... let alone been seduced by Jezebel! Since then, I have recanted my "calling" to be a minister, fornicated everytime I got "lucky," drank my share of the "fermented" wine, and FAILED to witness for HIM! (at LEAST I wasn't a hypocrit!) So, I ASK you..... am I a Christian??? If I am.... I'm the lowest form of one! But, am I LIKE Christ??? I think SO! I believe in (and preach) PEACE and understanding! I CARE for the troubled in the World. I treat my brother (regardless of the color of his skin) the way "I" would want to be treated. And you know what? I can't think of ANOTHER requirement for being like Christ! Except to believe in a God that MAN described! I'm sorry, but my inteligence makes that just a bit too hard! So.... because I'm not a SHEEP..... I am destined to burn in a fiery lake of HELL! It is NO WONDER that my life has been WASTED!!! And, yes.... I am ANGRY about it! I had potential!! I could've been a CONTENDER!!  My struggle with RELIGION is the MAIN (if not sole) cause of a lifelong depression that has ROBBED me of my "birthright!" I am now 51 years old, and I feel that my life is WASTED! I am an "observer!" Those who don't QUESTION their faith live on, as do those who don't SUFFER the oppression OF it! They marry and have children. They LIVE! I am stuck in the emotional abyss of those who HAVE no life, because they are not COMFORTABLE with it! Okay..... NOW I have unzipped my fly! NOW you know the real HOBO that I am! If I had a LICK of sense, I'd delete this whole post! But, I just no longer CARE! Slim, I will get you my father's opinion just as soon as I get it. Because YOU apparently need to know this stuff! I have ENJOYED our discussions along this vein, but PURELY for the intellectual exercise! The more I get involved in these religious discussions, (and have to look at myself,) the MORE I understand FOZZY!! And THAT really scares me!  |

The more I get involved in these religious discussions, (and have to look at myself,) the MORE I understand FOZZY!! And THAT really scares me!  Ok Hobo, I can't wait.. I will take into consideration that your Dad is a Baptist.. And I do like the way they teach..So I realy am looking forward to His Response.. NOW for yours.. You state that to be a Christian is to be Christ like..! Hmm-- Christ told us "he that Believe's in Me, even though he is dead. Yet shall he live." The apostle's and others asked Jesus "what do we do to enter the Kingdom of Heaven?" Christ Reply "Do the works of my Father" The Apostle's Not understanding asked "What is the Works of the Father?" Jesus said "To believe in Me, the one He sent" So Now the question should be asked -- Do you do the works of the Father? My friend Hobo, I tell you this will be my last participation on a thread like this. So what I mean is this will be the last topic I discuss concerning faith etc.. But.... saved from WHAT??? The Lamb of God took all the sins upon Himself, and died for us. So that we who believe will not tast the sting of Death. What about those who don't Believe? First off I say God is a Just God. and if one doesn't know, then according to the Word, that person cannot be held accountable. But if they do know, then they are held accountable for one thing.. One Sin, and that Sin needs No Forgivness, but it needs a Change of Mind.. To believe or not.?! Jesus said the Worlds Sin was Unbelief in Him! The Church here on earth, the man made church has screwed this message up.. They Take Something So Simple, and put Touch not, Tast Not, Do not's etc.. When Everything is permissible, BUT not everything is Profitable..Do not let anyone judge you in food nor drink, full moon, nor Sabbath.. For all those things where a Shadow of what was to come. And Now that the Fullness has Come. Those things are to be counted as rubbish.. The whole trick is not to become a Slave to any.. Hobo-- You my friend have been thier and done that! Yes you have-- Does that make you any better or worse than anyone else? NO-- Matter of fact if we are to be judged by what we do, then King David will be in hell with you and I..and so will King Solomon, Peter, Paul, Timothy, Saul, King Nebukanezzer, Samson, Geddion, and many many if not all of the SAINTS of the Bible.. For it is by GRACE we are saved, it is not of ourselve's, it is a Gift from God.. King David-- Killed Uria the Hittit after Banging his wife. Then married the woman. There where other sins of his, I choose these 2 because we have such Limited minds, these hit home the hardest.. ON top of all this, God Said "David was a man after His own Heart" WHY? Becuase David NEVER DENIED GOD! Isacc-- was a Liar and a Trickster.. But his leniage was blessed of God to carry the seed of the Messiah.. I could go on and on, but I think you understand what I am saying..GOD accepts you for you. And your Salvation is in HIS Hands, and No one can take what God Give's Away.. In order to have eternal life, One must have Eternal Forgivness.. And what's to say you have not been doing your calling? Just because you dont have a doctorit degree in the ministry, does that make you any less smarter? NO-- For we are given our right, By God, and God alone.. THat Anointing cannot come from man, but man thinks there the ones who give it..again man playing God.. I'm not a SHEEP..... I am destined to burn in a fiery lake of HELL! My struggle with RELIGION Okay..... NOW I have unzipped my fly! NOW you know the real HOBO that I am! If I had a LICK of sense, I'd delete this whole post! But, I just no longer CARE! As for agreeing with Fozzy, I too have agreed with Him at least 4 times. Your Friend Slimland |
My struggle with RELIGION is the MAIN (if not sole) cause of a lifelong depression that has ROBBED me of my "birthright!" I am now 51 years old, and I feel that my life is WASTED! I am an "observer!"
