I have the DVD set and have watched it 3 times. (I like watching my buddies drive by. haha) The super B fuel tank that had his pup go through the ice in front of Hugh was a friend of mine. As for making things seem worse than they were for effect... I totally am with everyone on that. All through it we're going... uh... could they make it seem ANY worse? I have friends that go every year and love it. Its dangerous and cold. But I have dealt with those same temps lots, just not on the ice. The only reason I haven't gone is the concern of.... washroom issues? How the heck do I pee, can't stop on the ice for 4 hours? And you can't pee on the ice anyway, you get sent home. Just wouldn't know how to deal with that. I just got an offer again to go this year, still tempting, but still....meh. I just had coffee over Christmas with the company owner of that truck that went through. I didn't realize till the third time I watched it it was his, next time I see him I'd like to find out if they approached him and asked if they could show his company name. Obviously if they did he said no. Yeah, I noticed that too ( all the blurring out ) all the names on sides of trucks and even the tag numbers were blurred out.... that was a big editing job. Hey, how about that scene where---Hugh is standing on the running board- taking a whiz with his back to the camera-----bet the operators of the ice road didn't like seeing that scene- or Drew getting up and walking back to get a new coffee cup, or the countless scenes of Hugh with his driver's seat- turned 45degrees to the side---with him setting back just riding and guiding. |

Since I run up there...not that I'm any authority.... the whole show is so Hollywoodized it's not even funny! :roll: :roll: :roll:
Good Lord! The conditions ARE rough, the roads are terrible, but give me a break! If you keep your head about you & follow the rules.... If the History Channel REALLY wanted to show what it is really like up there they would be more realistic about it, remember it's been done up to keep people's interest. It's a rough job, extreme environment, but us guys have been doing this for over 50 years, every year. It's just another job that one "does the best we can with what we have to work with", & that's that! I couldn't believe the junk that they used in that show...the vast majority of the trucks (mine included) are in very good shape, they have to be. The last thing anyone wants to do is have a break down up there, a tow bill could break you! The overweight thing was totally staged, as the scale at Enterprise doesn't work like that. If you tell them ahead of time you may be overweight & need to scale you will be allowed to do so. Especially on loads going to the mines, as there are so many oveersized loads going up there it's not even funny. I wouldn't be suprised that Nuna (the company that operates the ice road) has banned the History Channel, as they know it was not done with any semblance of reality. I've heard they are pretty p-o'd about the whole thing, as they were told it would be a documanetary, but I guess that was too boring for the history channel. I noticed when I was in Yellowknife over the last 2 weeks (I run there twice/week) that everything was being set up for this year & the road should be open in about 2 weeks. Yahoo! As for Drew getting the coffee cup, and Hugh sitting sideways, thats just the way it is a lot.
Guys rig up something to the wheel and go back, make food, whatever they need to do. TV/DVD's are usually sitting on the passenger seat. |

Ice Road Truckers was shown last year on the History Channel. It showcased the lives of truck drivers who haul loads to the diamond mines along the ice road. The series was viewed by more than 3.4 million viewers. Producers of the series wanted to shoot a follow-up, but the company that builds the winter road featured in the documentary say they want no part of the sequel. According to a report by the CBC, producers sought permission to film a second season but were turned away by the mining companies responsible for building the road. "It's a TV series built around this romantic notion of people making a dash for money and doing it at a very high risk," Tom Hoefer, a spokesman with Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., told the CBC. "It's very far, far from the reality of how we operate the road, and so we just didn't see any value in continuing that message." The History Channel is now reportedly looking at shooting the sequel on other ice roads |

I think they should fly in, and stay at Eagle Plains Lodge on the Dempster.
That way they could meet and ride along with "real truckers" that actually run the north... and buy lunch :P Lots of public ice roads north of Inuvik, and of course the Mackenzie winter road.... It's weird up there, you'll see families in a new S.U.V. on these crazy roads @ - 50 going to the mall... ( a 2 day drive ):shock: They can only get out of town, 3 frozen months a year :? |
