Any body been watching the show Ice Truckers?

I've been taping the show and watching it. It's pretty good except I can't believe the truck sinking into the ice at the beginning of the show is for real. Well, maybe they sank a truck but they make it look like one sunk up there and they just happened to catch it on camera. AI like the boss guy he was funny when he was acting like he was fireing a gun at his buddy out the window for trying to pass him. Kind of a John Wayne moment. Good stuff. That Drew fellow on there that keeps messing up I think was in my training class at Werner. If I remember he was kinda different. Thats all I have to say.

nickbtubas 08-04-2007 07:28 AM

that intro is a computer model and not real. i would be very timid to drive over any frozen lake.

Aligator 08-04-2007 09:33 AM

14 or 15 hours at 35 MPH?
Can you imagine?? :?

greg3564 08-04-2007 09:47 AM

I like how that guy Hugh makes his drivers drive junk. The one young guy that drives for him has a 1995 FLD with a heater that keeps breaking. There's no way in hell I would drive that in the extreme cold and snow. Hell, I wouldn't drive a 95 FLD anywhere for that matter! :D

Sabine 08-04-2007 09:58 AM

Gotta love listening to Hugh how the one guy broke all that stuff on the truck. I would like to hear his explanation on how exactly the driver broke the ECM. He sounds like such a jerk, doesn't he?

yoopr 08-04-2007 10:13 AM

Hugh is exactly the right person to have as boss in NWT-No Nonsense-Goes by the rules and works and what Doesn't work-
Sounds like a P...k but he's just like a DI in boot camp-Tries to save lives by being tough.

Yeah I don't get why they are so hard on Drew. I guess they think he goes over pot holes and stuff too fast, too much jarring on the equipment...... Or maybe it's the fact that the truck is like 16 years old...

Funny though Hugh's transmission went out on the first episode, which looked to be due to bad shifting technique.

Most of those guys they have on the show seem to be bone heads... Exceptions being Alex and one of the younger guys. Not TJ, TJ Tillcox or whatever is a bone head too... I love how he hit a pickup truck because his service line came loose. "Mechanical Failure" my ass.

The show is mildly entertaining just because of the characters on it.

He seems like a pretty decent guy, I wouldn't mind working for him myself. Though some of the equipment problems he blamed on Drew, I don't see as being Drew's fault...

I did get my new favorite saying from Hugh though. "Talk is cheap, whiskey costs money."

I love that saying. I'm just trying to figure out how to work it into my daily conversations now.

Drew was over his head from the Beginning

I thought the show was pretty good but I got bored with it. I haven't watched the last couple episodes.

I think the show would have great potential if they hired Mike Rowe and went in the direction of "deadliest catch" and "dirty jobs".

greg3564 08-04-2007 02:36 PM

I just can't get over the junk equipment those guys are driving. You would think they would have top notch new equipment. Not 10+ year old crap with no heat, ice in the bunk and battery boxes falling off.

bluegrassdeb 08-04-2007 03:24 PM

Is it possible to lose your battery and NOT know it?

allan5oh 08-04-2007 03:27 PM

You guys have to remember that they gotta make a show out of it.

Kind of like "american chopper" do you honestly think that much soap opera goes on?

I know you're in Texas but when it gets down to -40 to -60F things get brittle-Trying to get heat from your radiator is priceless-You can close off your Radiator front except for 6" square but you've got frigid temps surrounding you in and keeping warm is priceless.
That's what Arctic Carhardts and Sorrels are for.

allan5oh 08-04-2007 03:44 PM

I stay decently warm till about -30C, both moving and not moving.

yoopr 08-04-2007 04:07 PM

same here because I was wearing my sorrels :P
Hey-I bought a new pair last year and was blown away-they're now assembled in China-couldn't believe it.

I got a touch of frost-bite in my right hand and after that once it gets cold that area smarts

Oh, I hear ya. I lived in Missoula, MT for a couple of years. One year I was working at a lumber mill in Bonner during winter and a Arctic front dipped down. It was -15 with wind chills hitting -70! I wore LaCrosse pacs. They were rated for something like -100. Abouthe only thing that was really warm were my feet. The cold was so bad it froze my mustache!

Those LaCrosse Pacs are soo heavy-Bet you ended up with Calf's the size of your thighs after wearing those things. I know they're warm but the Sorrel's are a lot lighter.
Where's Bonner? I don't remember that town

The Bonner mill is located just east of Missoula at the junction of I-90 and Hwy 200. When I was there, in 92-93, it was owned by Champion Lumber. It was bought by Stimson Lumber and now I don't know who owns it. It's funny, the Champion Land/Timber offices is now a Pilot truck stop!

yoopr 08-05-2007 07:03 AM

I, as well as all the rest of the truckers, LOVED trucking across Montana in the 80's during the Fuel "Crisis".

NO Speed limit and in Montana if you drove a little Over the Top you got a $5 "Fuel Conservation" Ticket so everybody running across Montana carried a Wad of $5 Bills :P

continental 08-10-2007 10:53 PM

I really liked the part, where Hugh's little pet, Rick, was "freezing" his
ass off, due to a broken heater, yet he managed to drive with his sleeve
rolled up, so the camera would catch his badass tattoo, and you can see
what a tough MOFO he is.

I don't buy it. It came loose just feet from where he hooked up. If it was that loose he should have noticed when he hooked it up. I don't know about you but when I hook up the lines I always check to make sure they aren't falling apart.

I also seem to remember them securing it with some black strap or something... I guess I just assumed one of the hands was bent or something and loose.

In any event I still say driver error.

well, the safety man who was there while we werent inspected it and said it wasnt the drivers fault, he seems to be a real hard-ass when it comes to safety, so I believe him, maybe you should go into business with Hugh, he says everything is the drivers fault, including a computer going bad. I dont see how anybody can work for that guy.
it also didnt happen just feet from where he hooked up, it happened going down the hill on the Ingraham trail, he made it quite a ways before it happened. I had recorded the show and watched it again just to be sure

whthorse 08-12-2007 07:33 AM

AH Come on you guys... Hugh isn't all that bad... Yes not all the problems with Drew's truck were driver's error however quite a few of them were and Hugh could have given Drew his walking papers on more than one occasion but he didn't.

As far as why do these guys run older trucks as opposed to a newer one.
Would you want your brand new $130,000.00 Petercar to fall through the ice or your 10+ year old $12,000.00 FLD?

And lastly to the comment that you would never use a '95 FLD anywhere. I own the pinks on 2 older trucks. An '88 Pete and a '95 FLD. Both make the same amount of money on the road as a brand new truck except all my profit goes into my pocket and not to the finance company in the form of a truck payment. My trucks are in good condition and when something does start to fail I have it fixed. This is still less expensive than a new truck.

I agree Drew needed to go, but then Rick is driving in 50 below temp with no heater and Hugh calls him a whiney pussy, you notice Hugh has a heater. I wonder how he would do without one. Rick may whine about it, but he keeps going, so that should be good enough.

TK THE TRUCKER 08-12-2007 12:30 PM

The guys from the show are often call in guests on Freewheelin' on the trucking channel on Sirius. Hugh was on the other day and talked about a bunch of stuff. A caller called in and asked him about Drew and Hugh said that there were many things that happened that didn't end up on the show like Drew driving into a large crack in the ice and breaking a front spring. Hugh is a hard ass but not that bad. I wouldn't run new trucks on the ice either. Not only because of the chance of falling through the ice but the trucks get the crap beat out of them running on those rough roads everyday all day. 8) 8)

geeshock 08-12-2007 12:38 PM

lol, just like most reality shows it only highlits the most exciting moments so yeh, it might apear like hugh is a d**k. not sure i agree with him running some of that equipment but that was thier choice to take the job.

Uturn2001 08-12-2007 02:26 PM

Well IMHO Hugh is running junk for his fleet. The only truck he really seems to care about keeping in good order is his. Other than that the only time he really cares about the other trucks is if something happens that stops them from making him money.

Here is something to consider about the condition of Hugh's fleet. Hugh has 2 trucks sitting empty and Rick has no heat, but for some reason Rick is not jumping into one of the other trucks. What does that tell you? Tells me Rick knows the other two trucks have even more problems than the POS he is driving.

I worked for a guy like that one time. I was running a M-F dedicated run, about 450 mile round trip. Unless the truck stopped running he would insist on waiting until the weekend to fix anything.

Rick quit. Now Hugh is the only one left from his company driving the Ice Road. Next week, Season Final. Wonder if the History Channel will make another one next year?

Rick called into the Bubba show last week and said they got picked up for 2 more seasons. He will be driving for someone

Cool. WDVE in Pittsburgh had Hugh on a couple weeks ago. He didn't say much about the show because they only aired about 4 episodes at the time. He did however hint about Drew. If I find the interview on line I post the link. It was funny though.

continental 08-13-2007 05:48 AM

They're picked up for two more seasons?
Wonderful. Just how long can you watch the
same boring thing over and over again?
On the plus side, more chance for Hugh to fall
through the ice. Now that I want to see.

I guess I had it wrong then. No need to get so defensive! I thought he was still in Yellowknife when it happened.

TJ just doesn't seem like a good driver to me. What do I know though? I'm just a rookie myself with only a couple years experience.

I understand running junk equipment in that kind of enviroment but it's gotta have heat and be safe.

The key word is running. It has to run before it can be safe or heated. :D Hugh said he also employs Rick at his excavating company. Those trucks are going year round. That 1995 FLD Rick had with no heat must have some serious miles and wear on it. I liked how Hugh said Rick was "whining" about his heat. What a clown that guys is. No wonder he had no drivers at the end of the season.
