We have over 14,000 trucks, I cant imagine how hard it would be trying to fill that many with strict hiring standards. Its pretty hard to find a person in any industry with absolutely no tickets, no sort of misdemeaner charge ever, Absolutely no unemployment in the last 3 years. Ive talked to 20 people today for one of those jobs I was trying to fill. Almost every single one of them wanted the job....However, I was only able to find one that "Might" qualify. He is being checked out now.
Its easier for a smaller company to have strict hiring standards than a big company. Yes, it is hard to find a driver that meet the standards that the company gave you. That's why they start at 70K/yr. They are picky because they can afford to be. And by the way, the company you are recruiting for doesn't seem to think so. And did you just say your recruiting for JB is just to fill the seats? |

Hell, I know a recruiter who made over 340 grand last year....it wasnt me. However, Im not upset about it and you wont see me whining about it. Reality: He is just better at it than me. It does encourage me to work harder. |
They do.....drivers and recruiters are both part of the same business. Both are performance pay jobs. Im paid what Im paid to help the company make a profit, drivers are paid what they are paid to help the company make a profit.
By the way...everyone of our drivers can recruit too if they want more money. In fact drivers are paid a higher commission than I am. Also drivers get the same benefits I do. Also just because some recruiters make really really good money. That doesnt mean that some recruiters dont make less than drivers. Ive seen some recruiters only make 30 or 35 grand a year. Depends really on how good you are....my base pay is really really low. In fact for a few years when doing this, my base pay was minimum wage. That equates for some really small paychecks when you dont hire any drivers for a few weeks....and that does happen. |

That sound like a business partnership, and if it is so, I want a part of that profit, not just the loss. What about the involved labor? Well, Sheepdancer, I'm just starting to understand you. I'm so sorry, If I've misjudged you in the past. Knowing that recruiters sometimes only make 35K a year, my heart goes out to you. BTW, how many hours do you have to put in for that? What? 40?! The bastards! You can be a driver and make 45K and only have to work twive as much. So, how about it? Will you recruit yourself? |
How many hours do I work...Ive never figured them out. So lets do that. I work 40-45 hours a week in the office. I work from home in the evenings usually until about 9. Usually 1 weekend day, I drive up to joplin and card trucks. Thats an all day thing...so 8 hours there. Probably about 4 hours a week working on my recruiting website. Probably another 2 hours a week finding ways to generate more leads. Sundays I head over to the hotel to meet my drivers in town for orientation and usually take them to lunch. So at least 75 a week on average. I dont keep track nor do I care. Nor do I care that I work most of those hours for no hourly pay. Im all about the paycheck at the end.

That sound like a business partnership, and if it is so, I want a part of that profit, not just the loss. What about the involved labor Also they are paid a higher commission than I am for recruiting drivers. My pay is almost all commission. So in theory, a driver who does what I do could really make more than me because the commissions are higher for them. Reality: My job isnt very easy or more people would be doing it. Really if I made the choice to be a truck driver, I would spend my down time recruiting and make a fortune. Right now I could go to any large truck stop spend the day there and probably hire 4 drivers. I see drivers gripe when they get stuck over the weekend at some truck stop, I would sleep, get my rest and then spend the rest of the time recruiting. A 48 hour weekend layover could be a great thing for the forward thinking driver with a drive to succeed. Think about it...OTR driver "A" gets stuck in a truck stop in chicago waiting for a load, spends 48 hours griping to other drivers how much his job sucks and how much he hates his work. OTR driver "B" is stuck in the same truck stop for the same 48 hours spends a few hours carding trucks with a card that leads them to his own personal recruiting website and talking to drivers about the positive things about his job. He hires 4 drivers and makes 2000 bucks. See the difference? You want some of my profit? I would be happy to print up special cards for anyone out here that leads to my website, I would put a code on them identifying any one I send cards to. The only thing you would have to do is pass them out. I would be happy to split my commissions with anyone that would do that. Will I get any takers for that? Of course not. Some people would rather gripe about what they arent getting than figuring out ways to GET MORE. |
For those whom are curious...and I was curious enough to send Sheep and E-mail...the company in Washington he is refering to is Praxair. So...if you think you might want to try hauling some Liquid Oxygen, some Liquid Nitrogen, some Liquid CarbonDioxide, some Helium, some Hydrogen, or any of the other products that Praxair (formerly Union Carbide) manufactures, why not? It used to be next to impossible to get set up with an application for Prax...they have always been pretty tight lipped. Nice to see they are moving away from state employent office recruiting..or supplementing that application avenue.
