Which State's scales/ DOT treat Drivers the Worst?

My vote is on Missouri as far as scales....

For DOT.... you gotta love Virginia and how they ticket driver's for parking on the off-ramps...

Roadhog 05-03-2006 02:39 PM

My vote is the Ohio scalehouse near Cambridge on hwy70.
I have my reasons.
Here also is a photo of the trailer park these dickweeds live in.

In the two years I drove I never had a negative experience at a scalehouse, my only negative experiences with the authorities were with Customs at the crossing at Port Huron and one asswipe cop in Hoboken, NJ

Used to be Misery and Arkansas-Scaleman at Joplin and Judge in Neosho FINALLY got busted for running a Racket.

warsaw....
The reason I have a blown gasket with the Cambridge scalehouse is because of the low down behavior they did on March 2nd of '05.
Many the Michigan trucks were on an extendtion with their IFTA stickers. The state was unable to produce enough that year for some reason. They were due to expire March 1, 2005. Well...to give them some credit...my boss at the time was not the sharpest tool in the shed...and a lousy O/O businessman. (hard worker...just a lousy boss)

I left on a long extended route...and knew nothing of the IFTA sticker about to expire. I was new to the truck.
Anyway...my boss calls me, and tells me the sticker extendtion is about to expire, and I gave him a location up ahead on my route, where I could receive a FedEx package with the new stickers. That was 6pm at a Pilot in Missouri on Hwy 70. I had to be somewhere east of Cambridge...I don't remember...probably Philly by the next day...and I beat cheeks.
I received the new IFTA stickers...but was in the middle of a raging horrible snow storm that followed me all the way east. Temps were below freezing....and it even says on the back of the sticker to not apply them below such and such temp. AND it was blowing snow sideways...so I figured...I had them in hand...that should be good enough...considering conditions I was in.
I'm pulling through the scalehouse, noticing an unusual number of badgekissers inside, with an unusual number of Trucks parked behind the shack. Several were intently looking at the sides of all MICHIGAN trucks. I was one of three guys inside the office with the very same issue...failure to display decals $105.00 fine to be paid on the spot. Mind you it is still a raging snow storm....and I have my FedEx and decals in hand. Mattered not. While I'm standing there...you can hear the glee of these dickweeds exclaim as "there's another one..." "driver pull around back and come inside with your registration and log book."

On top of this...the officer at the counter is giving me a very disrespectful and condencending attitude. I square off with him...glaring deep into his eyes like I'm about to rip his gizzard out through his chicken neck. He further throws his dickhead behavior at me...like I'm suppose to be afraid of him and back down. Hell NO....I start to make him uneasy with my command of the situation, pointing out how HE is the one out of line. He tells me to take my attitude outside. I remember telling him something like to take his badge off and go out the door first. Now we have the attendtion of the whole room...and this guy shrinks right before my eyes. His CO looks over from his chair...and see's someone finally chopped this prique down to size.
His demeanor within minutes changes to cheerful....yeah...you lump of sheit....I wanted some gizzard! I paid the stinking fine with protest...but as usual in a proffessional manner. I never once disrespected anyone...but also was not about to be disrespected over a lousy business transaction. (these laws are not cut in stone..they are at the discretion of the officer...and in my case this was proof of a scamass unproffessional behavior on the part of the Ohio DOT)

Insult to injury...my boss would not reimburse that $105 to me. So...he too lost a good driver. I hired on to the Company I'm with now.

Uturn2001 05-05-2006 03:01 PM

Roadhog, I would have fought that ticket. I had my IFTA stickers stolen one year while in Dallas and did not know anything about it until I got pulled in at the POE in Kansas on 35 N and it was brought to my attention by the scalemaster there.

Anyway I showed him my IFTA permit and was set on my way with no fines. I got stopped at every scale house all the way to the Twin Cities and every time I was let go once I showed them I had a valid IFTA permit.

If you ever get in that situation again, tape the stickers to the corners of your side windows. At least they cant say you were not displaying them.

warsaw 05-05-2006 09:53 PM

Mine wanst so bad ...I pulled throught the scale with 12k on the trailer and was told to come back around ..so ok i did and then the red light comes on and Im told that someone would be with me in a minute..
So he came out with this huge yard stick with a 45 on the top and said that I was 1 inch to tall...so before I could fix it I had to pay the fine..they couldnt take cash check or credit ...only com-check
and he gave me flack the whole dam time too

yoopr 05-05-2006 11:05 PM

That's the way it goes sometimes-Fix it but before you fix it Here's your Ticket.

davenport1 05-07-2006 01:04 AM

as far as scales i always get problems in in I-40 in North Carolina, right before you get to Statesville. i agree with Sans Argonauts, DOT in VA is a pain in the neck. i love SC, i never have had any problems with DOT, cops or the scales, or anybody at that.

I dunno, but I'll relay the story. I parked behind another truck who was waiting for the reciever to open, it was about 4:15AM, I had a delivery time of 4:30. We were both parked off to the side of the road, it was a side street and there was no traffic. I was sitting in the drivers seat updating my logbook when I was blinded by a light in my mirror. I squinted and saw the cop had his spotlight shining right in my eye and had his red and blues on.

"DRIVER, EXIT THE VEHICLE AND COME BACK HERE", he said over the PA.

I got out and walked towards the cop, who kept the damn spotlight right on me.

"Move your truck". He said.

"Where? I've got a delivery to make here."

"I don't care, you're blocking traffic, now move your truck, now."
As he said that, two cars went by, obviously with no trouble.

As I started back to my truck I heard him yell "Tell the other driver to move his truck too."

I walked back "With all due respect sir, why don't you tell him to move."

"You getting smart with me? You tell him to move his truck and I want you both out of here or I'll write you both up."

I walked up to the other driver and knocked on the door. He got out of the sleeper and opened his window.

"Sorry to bother you but there's this a--hole cop behind me and he says we've got to move or he'll write us both a ticket."

Driver looks back. "Worthless Hoboken cops, they're always doing this sh-t. Follow me, I know where we can park for the time being." We both drive off and park about 3 blocks down the road in an empty lot. The Cop sat there in front of the reciever for about 20 minutes, then satisfied that he had done the public good, left. We drove our trucks back, by that time the reciever was opening for business and got us unloaded pretty quickly.

Sorry, but if you are dumb enough to park on a ramp, you deserve a ticket.

NJ cops are good for that kind of thing

Perryville, Maryland. I will drilve 10,000 miles out of my way if I have to, but I will NEVER cross those scales again.

I only have ever had trouble in Misery.

Sabine 05-08-2006 01:34 AM

we worked for a company out of Canada, and they had a couple of drivers do some things in the great state of Montana , blow by the Rocker scale, which was an accident, new driver, never been there and break the incoming weigh pad by the Idaho state line with a 134.000 pound load because the officer insisted that the load would have to be weighed, because he was the law.

After that they did not like us out there at all. Every time they were open we were checked out.

For worst, Quebec, for sure.

Templedawg 05-08-2006 06:54 AM

Had more than my fair share of overweight tickets. and several full blown inspections. If you're legal and have a good attitude about it, no big deal. Never had any problem wherever I ran. Guess it all has to do with attitude. Company pays the tickets and dot at the scales are used to seeing most LTL's in there at night. I run mainly between Ga and va.

Crow Agency Montana

I've had my logbook checked all over and never had much of a problem (everything LOOKS good in the books...).

IF you want some info on DOT and "scale dodging" you can click here:Weigh Station Information to see some very specific information. My husband and I left a couple of comments for a couple scales here. Used the information last week when we were a WEE bit heavy, too...

UMMMMMM... it's illegal in a lot of states. I have seen drivers getting ticketed in TN and elsewhere. It's BS but it's true.

We drive team and I often wake up on a ramp. I get in a hurry to leave, just in case. I don't want to be the one who gets the award for best parking...

Why the hell didn't you park there in the first place??? Parking on a ramp IS a traffic hazard.

There is no scalehouse on 75 south in Ohio unless you mean the one way up towards Findlay.

Where the hell do you see anything about parking on a ramp?

Anyways, Missouri and Virginia get my vote.

I can tell none of the posters here have ever been to Maine. If your there is a questionable entry in your log within 15 minutes time your truck is hauled away to the impound yard and you are brought to jail and charged with a felony.Anyone that thinks this nuts can thank your local Wal-Mart for these insane laws,it's because of one of their drivers we have these laws and the PATT group.
It was not long ago the fine for being 20,000 lbs overweight was a small fraction of what a log book ticket was,now they are just about the same.

yoopr 08-20-2006 12:49 AM

Driven since '78 and never took a Load to Maine

Jackrabbit379 08-20-2006 12:51 AM

Dont even think about Maine, let alone go there. :P

mudawg 08-20-2006 01:36 AM

Up untill that famous Wal-Mart crash happened there Maine was a great state to truck in and out of.The DOT where regular blue collar workers just doing a job, like the rest of us.This is just one of the many, many reasons I will not haul for or shop at any Wal-Mart.It's like the saying goes,"you are either part of the problem or, part of the solution"Wal-Mart is not part of the solution.

Or the rest areas. And it's a moving violation, because you're disobeying a highway sign.

But everybody knows this, so don't park there, stupid. That's the part I don't get. How can they keep writing ticket after ticket, night after night? Hasn't everyone figured this out by now? Apparently not, because the rest areas are always full all the way a mile in either direction of the ramps every single night.[/b]

SC is only truly truck-friendly state on the east coast. Only two real weigh stations, truckstops everywhere up the gazoo, friendly cops, friendly people. South Carolina is the best state I know about to truck in. I've never been west of Cleveland, OH or Villa Rica, GA, whichever is further west, though.

Of course I guess it was friendlier before they closed all those parking areas. I guess the goodbuddies were hanging out there or people were pissing everywhere or something. I don't know the story.

Only part of SC that sucks is US 17 and 483,000 stoplights between Charleston and the NC line. (Which is a lot better with SC 31, but not better enough.)

GMAN 08-21-2006 01:36 PM

I think that most scales are not going to bother you much as long as you have a good attitude. Missouri used to be bad at Odessa. I am not sure that I would consider any state which has lane restrictions for trucks all that friendly. SC has lane restrictions. I do think that those in the Southeast and West are the friendliest. Unfortunately, with state tax revenues having a short fall, some states are beefing up their DOT and doing more checks. I was in Texas a few month's ago and there was a scale opened that I have rarely seen opened. They had DOT checking logs and trucks packed the scale. This was on I-20 East. It was the Westbound scale that was opened. Occasionally the Eastbound is open, but very rarely is the Westbound. I think it is going to get worse. Texas and other states have hired hundreds of new DOT people. They need to pay for those salaries, somehow.

yoopr 08-21-2006 04:32 PM

Texas was very truck friendlly years ago-Now It's horrible-Each County-City has their own version of the DOT.

Jackrabbit379 08-21-2006 05:29 PM

I guess they do come up with stuff from time to time. One thing about Texas,is that you don't have to worry about the chicken coops :P at the state lines. Well,El Paso has one south of town, but that's El Paso :P . Every so often, the DOT will have their portables set up at the rest areas, but don't have to worry about running across the scales when ya come into the Lone Star State :P
