How many hours per year do a lot of younger people spend playing video games each year?....

Playing video games is fun. Helping your fellow man isn't.

I'm sure if Obama were "requiring" 50 hours of video game playing per year, nobody would be complaining.

I think my sons actually enjoy the personal rewards from helping out others. It's just getting them out of bed! That's the hard part.

Kids would have so much more self esteem and confidence if they did more public service....

It's up to parents to determine when, where, and for how long their children volunteer. The only time the government can compel one to volunteer or serve is as a condition of parole or probation.

If Obama proposes something that gives kids options for community service that is fine, but the government cannot compel one to serve against his will.

The draft can be reinstated by Congress, so the government can "compel" you to serve your country.

My sons had to register with the Selective Service in preparation of such an act of Congress.:tears:

They didn't outlaw anything. They simply stopped drafting.

The draft law expired in 1973.

It has to be signed into law by the President. The draft is very unpopular amongst the people and very few people in Congress support the measure. Selective Service is a joke. Apparently the government abandoned enforcement of the Selective Service law due to public backlash. There is also a Conscientious Objectior provision that allows those who are opposed to war or military service on religious or moral grounds avoid being sent to the front lines.

No matter how clear you think you are being you are trying to compare a ficticious set of laws to be required by law to do community service. What is the punishment of breaking one of these material law thingies? Jail time? Loss of license? A fine? There is none becuase it is a fancy way of say a feeling of obligation which is not the same as being required by law.
