Truck drivers spend a lot of time thinking about… time. From Hours of Service to detention time, drivers are always watching the clock. Even time spent at home has its own special designation for drivers and their careers (Home Time!)

This time-related stress is one reason that trucking is a challenging job. While driving is a rewarding career, trucking companies can still find it difficult to hire good truck drivers that aren’t already in the business.

Retaining skilled drivers is becoming critical for trucking companies to keep their rigs moving. As a result, these companies have started incentivizing rookie drivers by offering beefy sign-on bonuses and other perks. Yet despite this, the driver shortage rages on.

Fortunately, trucking companies are recognizing the true value of a skilled, hard-working truck driver, and they’re offering a new type of bonus. And this bonus will come with a package familiar to truck drivers – time.

Trucking Companies Offering Tenure

PGT Trucking made headlines recently. They paid out over $1 million last year in bonuses. Truckers were able to rake in the sweet revenue if they met certain criteria. But, PGT Trucking went the extra mile. Truckers driving for PGT for over 27 years got a $7,000 bonus for their tenure.Naturally, this rate scaled up all the way to 35 years of driving where a truck driver receives almost $9,000.

Rather than worrying about their time, truck drivers are starting to be rewarded for it. And the idea of tenure has caught on.

Cedar Creek Trucking offers pay based on tenure, in addition to their standard bonuses for mpg and idle time. Builders Transportation offers a cent per mile bonus of $0.65 for those with tenure. Plus, they offer detention pay too, which is always nice.
