Truck drivers aren’t known for being scaredy cats. They’re known for big rigs and nerves of steel.

But even rugged, experienced drivers get spooked sometimes. From reckless four-wheelers speeding around the highway during a midnight run to a stomach-destroying meal at a truck stop, truckers aren’t invincible.

In the spirit of Halloween, we’ll share the top three scariest aspects of being a truck driver. And we want you to share yours in the Class A Drivers forum.

Unsafe Parking is the Scariest Part of Being a Truck Driver

Dangerous parking actually comes in two flavors. The first is when you park at an unlit or shady truck stop.

If you run out of hours and you’re forced to park at a rest area that looks like a haunted house, there are some precautions you can take. You should park with your driver door towards the building and towards the light. This way, when you get out of the truck, you can see your surroundings, and you don’t have to walk all around your trailer in the dark.

You should also consider carrying a heavy flashlight if you have to run to the bathroom. And make sure to keep your doors locked when you sleep.

No Parking is Simply Terrifying

The second aspect to dangerous parking is when there isn’t any truck stop at all!

The best solution to this is to plan ahead. This situation is similar to those horror movies where someone runs upstairs, and you’re in the audience shouting, “Don’t run upstairs!”

Especially with Electronic Logging Devices tracking your every movement, truckers can no longer get away with driving an extra hour to find a great truck stop. Route planning becomes essential to fighting off the panic of not finding a parking spot.

You never know what kind of ghosts or serial killers exist in the darkness on the side of a road. So better be safe than sorry.

A lack of parking is in the news often, so that’s why we chose to highlight this problem.
